Folk’s - I did manage to cross cut, but it was tough as nails to do! I can respect anyone who CAN cross cut w out doin damage, also doin a good job. Anyhow, I just did it in steps; from deeper at the tail end, and did it in three steps/ areas…again, in three different settings, goin from deeper to shallower…probably not the correct way, but I’m using a stock planer…I then cleaned up w surform, block, block plane and it looks sweet! So I just added a little tail kick but I am not given away all my secrets, enjoy the pics! One more change; wp (wide point) is forward center 2" … 5’10"x 22"#!!
Tail change! 16 1/2" tail now, but 17" nose. 9 .5" wide tail block x 3.5" deep fish cuts. Used a large almost Mark Richards fin to draw my fish tail cut out.
I sure Hope -Steve Coletta sees this# he gave me a few pointers - which I just figured out…he gave me sum hints on bottom rocker design for my Fish… it’s pretty f’ing AWSUM! It’s not tail kick either! Lowel -'I tried your planing concept on deck also - thanks again man! Anyway, we got it at 2.5" thick+ 1/16"! I already know this board is going to stay in my grubbies… more:'after cross cutting in sum tail rocker, I turned - with what - Bill T. Suggested also. I thank everyone for the tips/pointers! It all works. Again, thanks to -PeteC, and everyone else who left their .02.
THANK YOU!
To be continued…
Tommorow I will saw out my design outside the line 1/4" and power plane to my line, surform corners close to the line. Finish w block sanding using 60gr. Next I will surform my bottom rail bands + sand, but I will add a panel vee inbetween fins, no tail kick on it…it’s just got a good smooth tail rocker. This sucker is gonna be fast ! I am probably going to flip the tip a bit…thin nose foil (deck side) to about to my chest area…tail will get a little thinning also…it’ll have a slightly thinned tail in which ill drop the tail foil behind my rear foot. I won’t know for sure until I check foil. Again, it’s foam coming off deck… so far everything looks evened out, I tilted up tips on my stands, looked at bottom, and sides -'it checks.
I forgot to mention, well, I first cut my second and final 1/8" deep layer on the bottom…Lowel -if you’re there I did what you said, about cutting straight down(down stringer) the deck + bottom before I did my corn rows planing as told previously…1/1; deck/bottom…1/8" deep cuts…thing’s went AMAZINGLY WELL today! The surf Gods were on my side today…the nose flip area on deck I set my pp on lowest cut, and I angled pp down the nose to fit angle, and trimmed it off…blended w surform and block. Did some block planing on deck from tips towards center, and on bottom center towards tips. I set my trim plane at a low cut, and I use a slight angle as I push…trim only after block sanding.
Folk’s - this design is MY OWN! It’s completely my own hand made design w battons, masonite etc…YEAAAHHHH!!!
A Few fin set ups:
A. 1/8" tow , 1 1/4" in off rail four deg cant
B. 1 1/2" in off rail 1/8" tow, two deg cant. I’ll figure it out.
Come out to visit us out near santa cruz! I’ll tell you what! If you take a few pics of me surfing -I’ll take some of you! Ah, I’d take sum of you anyways!? I just got a picture of me in a BAILY WETSUIT riding a Chuck Vinson shaped Fish…I’m just getting down the line on a two foot wave! LOL. But im 15:D
Glad to hear it, I think its more rewarding that way. I’ve had help on plenty of my shapes, I always say I copy enough to give credit to others if it works, and I ad-lib enough to take the blame if its a dog - my worst dogs are the ones I got too creative on and just shaped stuff out of my head, LOL. Lotta help from the swaylocks crew has given me some good boards too, 'tho.
Yup! I’m NOT getting too creative on it. Infact, I decided to do a flat to panel vee, down hard rails, and a modified/modern eagle beak nose. It’ll be thinner than my Jet…my tail will be thin enough. I got a moderate tail rocker (smooth flow). 1 3/4" tail rocker FWIW.
PICS FOR FINS! There you go brother!
Fins - fyi these are True ames brand fins.
Here’s a shot of my tail rocker (not totally done yet) . BTW - I had to create it, as my blank is/was very flat. I just need to surform + sand near the end/bottom a bit, and blend it all into my overall rocker…
About my Fish Foil 12" from tips (thicknesses). I got 1 3/4" tail 12" up from tips, and nose is a whopper! It’s 2 1/16" thick! And that’s 12" down from tips…the plan is to get it @ 1 1/2", and tail will stay where its at. But it’ll thin down aft sanding block.
those fins are: 5 1/4" high x 7 3/8" wide and single foiled. Thanks for the comps!
I was going to try s deck, but I changed my mind, and will go ahead w dead flat deck, flip the tip a tad, and pull off some foam around the rails back near tail block.
iirc it was a landlord issue, not a pussification issue here, lol. Lotsa guys here send their boards out for glass, no shame in that. Although if you have a place to do it, always more challenging and rewarding to do your own.
I’ve done one glass job before, and honestly it wasn’t as bad as I made it out to be… I just layed it on to heavy…but now I know not to leave pools…it should be better.
Why don’t you not worry about it, and -let me see your board. It’s not being a pussy if you’re not set up for glassing silly! You can read, correct? I am shaping out of my yard…I did not want bugs landings etc…now I have a spot to do it… can I see YOUR SHAPES!!!
Are you going to prep sand align the fins before glassing or are you jus going to use the 3-2-1 method? Sometimes when I’m in a hurry i just align them a few inches off the nose with a straight edge.
Hell yes loss…gite done
I’m with Gadzu, Do the glass job, if worried about smell, the do epoxy. Do it like in Hogans heros…dig a tunnel and put the stove over it. keep a look out and spread the dirt via holes in your pockets.
Gagdtuk - where are you at? Come on out! Let’s hit the surf! I want to clear up any doubt you might have, ok. Do you want my phone #? Bring a video camera, or whatever. But until then stfu!
Resinhead - I have a storage unit I can glass in. But I gotta figure out how much cat, and whatever amounts of stuff goes in what. It’s been 15+ yrs since I dabbled w shaping /glassing. I just need to get the info again as I lost it.
My hands were shakey today (could be tired?) as I got a house painting job for a week. Anyhow, I was pressure washing for a few hrs…I get home after work, and I felt
Motivated to shape, but my body wasn’t keeping up w mind…I.start sawing, and I notice my arms were wobbly, aand my motions cutting were not right. I stop - regroup, but I decided to just saw around the nose in segments…I didn’t have much rm -as my template was pushed to the limits on a 23" wide blank…I stop again, and tell myself why am I making it soo difficult? So I cut longer segments off from tip sides towards center all the time staying outside the line of my design by 1/4" +! Well, here it is! It’s good to go! All I gotta do is plane around it after work, maybe a little surform work, block sanding… flip her over and finish my tail rocker, hog off some foam cross cutting my deck near nose to pull off some of the foam back down near chest…wittle away w surform, spoke shave , and block to blend my cross cuts out… then I will start my bottom rail bands…
I had my first board glassed at Stretch’s shop because to my amazement it looked like a surfboard. A friend showed me how to glass # 2. I found that I liked making and riding my own boards and for the cost of a pro glass job I could make another board. I’m still a shitty glasser and I hate( an verb I don’t use lightly) the final sanding of hot coat/gloss coat part of the deal. But, I did get pretty good at repairs fixing all the bubbles and crap along the lap line. Yah gotta learn how to lam your own boards, fix em, make fins, do boxes, etc. I guarantee mistakes will happen in the process. It may or may not look like shit, but you can always make them water tight and the board will surf good. I’ll show you how I do fishes when your ready, shapa. Mike
Mike -I thought your clean clear Fish looks real clean! Thanks I’ll call you this evening.
Today I bit the bullet and actually power planed the side of rail after sawing outline! I just set pp planer on zero and started at a end did a side at a time. Did I little surform work, and sanding…BUT – look at this THING! I think it takes practice, but definitely leave more meat by cutting outside the line at least 1/4" if you’re just starting out pp rails. And have a surform and block handy ti finish x any wavy spots… sand w block at end to fine tune it.
I’d LOVE to see you build a Fish board! Today I went to work painting a house, came home at about 2 pm, and I grabbed planer, box of tools, and went all out on the Fish! I think the pp technique is tricky for a beginner, but I noticed it does make a very true outline. Even
If you sand to finish w sanding block, it still looking square. Overall I’m impressed!
