Folk’s - the wind blew my board off the my stands…Maybe mother nature made me do the right thing? I had a dent 1/8" deep by the side rails on bottom …by the rail! So! I did roll to vee!and weirdly I had dent under the nose on bottom! Actually, I was thinking about adding a little cosmetic nose flip here it is!!!..

Looking solid! What’s in the green box in the back round?looks like it moves around a lot like a furby.
P.S. I like your loose cannon style
Jim - if you’re outhere lurking I want to say thank you! I was told your method by a swayz member, and it worked real well! So far I just ysurformed and sanded my rails on bottom a different way… I went from zero 14" from tips, and then I surformed a progressively shallow bevel and moved forward to wp, from here I fattened in front of wp, and faded to zero at nose tip end…I just eye balled it.
On the deck I tried your method from tail to nose. But I started at about 6-10" from tips… Anyway I cut a 45 deg angle rail band working slow and low 1/32" cut depth, and I kept pp even and seated from tail to nose…stay n away from tips 6 -10" … tommorow
I’ll cut a second band inboard centered over half the part of my primary band on inside towards stringer…the rest ill surform, sand ,and screen. Your method works perfectly! Thanks MUCH! Note: the method I used was Jim’s, but adapted to my own ideas… DISCLAIMER: use at your own bliss!
Update: my cut out is changed! I accidentally slightly cut into the foam about 1/16" “, so I changed the depth
Of cutout for my fish tail -from 3 1/2” -to 4" deep. it might be better?
My rail edge on the bottom if slightly softened in front of wp, and then it flows to zero to tips.
I’ll tuck underneath under edges ltr.
Shaping in your bedroom is dangerous. Sleeping in foam dust can cause you nasty skin irritation.
I recommend shaping in the bath tub, that way you can hose down the mess.
Today I worked on foil, and bottom rails etc…
Folk’s - I double checked my foil, roll on bottom - I checked to verify if - both sides were even… to do that I used my calipers, and yard stick along foil points… just making sure my bottom side is true. It’s close to as perfect as I could get it! I even used my Gator brabrand drywall sanding sponges rough side to even out the high spots…it all checks for now.
I also made my med hard rails apex was in the right spot… shallower @ 14" up from tips - fattest above center - shallower at tips by nose… ill tuck under in the tail…filled a small hole w light weight sparkling… Check it out!
Tommorow i crank up pp and mow off 1/4" more off deck foil near nose, do more rail bands, blend w surform, block,.and screen everything, tuck under edges, give it a one over…Sign it, put my Logo’s on -along w glassing on my keel fins and - I’m off to test my models out!!!
Let’s see the logos
I have to send in my design to foam ez and wait for it bro!
Tom -You should build a Fish, or a offshoot similar to my 5’10"! I still cant believe I shaped this!! I’m keeping this one for sure!
Funny you should say that James! I just bought a 6’4" MF blank yesterday and cut it out.I’m going for a retro single fin swallow tail . It’s going to be my 5th build .I got my template from greenlight (6’4" R).As you can see I’m a backyarder mad man
Hey Tom. Excellent reuse policy and ornamation of yard space. Solid beverage choice, too! mike
Tom - those boards work well also! I learned how to surf on a board similar to the retro surfboard you are showing here. Do you yourself a favor and get the micro round rasp and the 5 " Japanese pull saw from foam ez! Trust me on what I say bcuz it makes cutting out the crotch much safer than I thought. Last build I used it w out a issue, but this time I was in a hurry to cut out crotch, so I used jigsaw…I over shot my cut by 1/8"! So I had to change my depth from 3 .5" deep @ crotch to 4". To be honest, it looks perfect at 4" deep.
Have fun!
I think this is Jeff Phillips on a Zippy Fish in Cardon Mexico. Cardon is an amazing resort just outside of Mazatlan with an incredible left. The Zippy Fish is a great board made by Michael Zippy out of the South Bay. I think he used to shape for Hap Jacobs.
Tom - -0ne thing I learned whilst shaping outside is: use a soft weight on your blank if you walk away for a break etc…
Tip: I also learned that if you get a hard line on top of your rail while sanding etc… use a free hand and cup over and shape that edge down w your hand, or pads of fingers w 150 gr sanding screen…Yes that’s right curve your hand to the and rub out the line, or edge out to blend your rail into the deck…then the rail again lightly… otherwise, one could overkill it, and f it up. Just a tip of the week.
interesting… I bought a zippi fish blank, and I looked him up and was/am impressed w his site, and nice looking zippi fish boards! I would love to test ride one!? Ty for the info!
Beer works good as a weight for the wind:) I am almost done with mine! I cut the fin box out and spackled her. I’m off to sand to a nice finish after me beer! Sierra Nevada " nooner" IPA. Probably glass on Monday and Tuesday and be stoked on my one week start to finish!!!
daly city fog is in full effect

sierra nevada pale ale = power! That stuff will rock you! Are you changing dims a bit for the single fin? .
Here’s where I’m at! I put the box with a fin in to get a visual.Single concave in nose slight v out the tail, soft rails to hard towards the tail.once again no power planner just lotsa sand paper and surform to thin out blank! I rock a 6" circular sander with 60 grit for an 1/2 hour per side,Kinda fun but kinda time consuming.I’m going with orange tint and hologram fine glitter in hot coat. I’ll have to make my own tread when I’m done and stop hi jacking yours:)
PS our boards kinda look the same
Tom- no worries…you can post about it! I don’t mind. But yes, you should make a build post! One of these day’s I hope to build a 7’2" Egg that given to me as a gift from a friend who told me she’s a"Pier Pont rat" after I took her surfing at moss. She is my sister’s gf whom taught me how to do some maneuvers I wasn’t aware of…the board I got was a 7’2" x 22+ egg WILLIAM-DENNIS surfboard it said on deck. It was an amazing board! I recall it had a rolled bottom, and a Greenough red fin I think! It looked like a Tuna fishes tail fin. It was a off red fin FWIW… I was 16 when she let me borrow it…then I says, " man you were right! This board is f ing good! " I really like it." She says it’s yours - you can keep it. I was pretty happy about it. Anyway, I had one last week riding it off and on…and I was blown away! I was actually riding the waves almost to the sand! It did seem to have a flattish rocker. It did have a bit of a. Curve in the tail…the rails were - nothing I was accustomed to; they were pancake thin almost pinched lookin! Kinda wafered! W rounded corners… I hope to recreate it if I can. The board was old, yellowed, but had life about it. Funny how I never forget it. Well, it did get stolen out of my yard!:/?Jim
