So yesterday late at Pipe during the contest, Garrett was sitting on the 3rd reef....He takes off on this bomb, it looks like hes stuck in the lip, but he gets a burst of energy and makes the drop. He makes it through 2nd reef, and into 1st reef. The thing unloads on him and just crushes him...I mean explodes. He washes up on the beach..all bloody and black n blue. A few kids are fighting over the tail section of the board...and WTF the thing has one of those Jet pack thingys that Walden is selling. So here's G-Mac all bloody, sand covered, wearing that padded lifevest / football gear apparel, holding on to a jet pack, people are asking who the F&ck was that?...........My kid walks up and asks for his autograph..G-Mac without missing a beat signs it....with totally shaking hands (I mean the guys was drained). Fricking Hero status!!
G-Mac you are a legend!!!
Look for that ride on the Walden site soon....It was insane. Completely put the little men at the Pipe Pro to shame. I mean he was way the f*ck out at 3rd reef...made it all the way across.... looking like Greg Noll.
This is the kickoff of the next arm’s race. Weapons of Mass Wavecount. Unless we get these classified as PWCs they’re going to start showing up everywhere, all the time. All the REI “watermen” are going to trade in their goatboats for this new and improved version. Talk about sitting on the outside…
Before you know it, these guys will reinvent a “little known facet of surfing’s history” and try to tell everyone that the ancient Peruvians and Pacific Islanders were rocking these sleds back in the day. Power Olo’s. We’ll get videos of rappers doing this on vacation.

Haha this is classic!!. Sad thing is its probably not an unlikely scenario
Don't know about photos or vid, but tons of cameras there. As for promoting the thing? No stickers etc. I just recognized it from the ad on Sways, and the discussions about it.
I think G-mac is just a crazy ass mother f*ucker. Huge cajones. I think he just like to push it and try strange wierd stuff. I don't know if he hit a button on his wrist..via Bluetooth or what, but something helped him get into that wave, and over the ledge.
Yea, it’s all about G-head…last year he made a dangerous spectacle of himself out at Mavericks on his SUP, this year it’s “look at me” motorized power boating while the best pipe contest in decades is going on…
why doesn’t he just head north and rip up a pristine Alaskan Bay on a jet ski and tow-surf the wave off of a a calving iceberg or or something…oh wait, he already did that…
sorry, got no respect for a guy who doesn’t…respect
He's not selling out, he's "Exploring exciting new avenues in surfing", or "Following a different path". I don't care either way, but the man has some seriously big balls.
I was there today. I guess that was him out there…so someone said…Looked like he got his ass worked at least once. Maybe since Tudor put him to sleep on the beach at Malibu, he has something to prove. Or more likely just a payday.
It was quite a day. Most impressed by Kieren Perrow…After he got beat up in his second heat…bleeding from the foot and hand and limping…he came back all duct taped up and charged to move on to quarters. All in all…just off the charts waves and riders.
I don't know...Paid or no paid. You can watch this stuff on TV, you can see it in pictures, etc. But until you stand on the beach and really see it, you have no f-ing ability to comprehend what is going on, and how terrifying it is. I'm not rattling my sword here, but I've done some crazy surf sessions in hawaii. But I guarantee there isn't a sole on this website who would try that, paid on not paid.
So you can say sell out etc, etc......until you see something like that in person. It's absolutely scarey. 4x OH breaking in 5 ft of water, Just going square.
Yep I guess he was out there again yesterday...G-Mac must have a whole armada of those jet powered thingys.
I'm guessing that jet adds about 25 lbs to the board. And after catching the wave it probably does no good. Actually it probably screws up performance with all that venturi induction holes and contraption..battery etc, etc. So while I'd rather catch the wave with the jet pack..I'd rather ride a 60's board once up and riding.
The rest of you soul surfers.
Also you guys saying "oooh he's selling out!" WTF, What do you do for a living? Do you get paid for it? G-mac is a surfer trying to make a living ...surfing. He's got his niche and he's running with it. Since when has surfing "not" been exploited for profit in the past 40 years? Meaning: When was it when you couldn't buy a surfboard, wetsuit, surf racks, surf trunks. When was it when there wasn't team riders, with board mfgers logo's. I guess we can throw stones at our icons...........Dam you Velzy...Dam you Jacobs!!! ....Dam you Velzy/Jacobs!! Dave Sweet...Why did you make that first Foam board...Dam you!!! You OLD FARTS took the soul out of surfing...you sold out for profit. Even the so called ferrel surfers...Dave rasto, rob Machado, Brian Buckley....really. Even the underground guys like Kohl Christensen on the NS are getting big bucks in Sponsorships. Trust me Kohl is no longer swinging a hammer with his Brother & Dad and dad on the NS.
Give me a break. It's the year 2012. we would all make money at surfing if it popped up in front of us...But you need a catch. G-Mac found his, he charges the Biggest waves on the planet on boards that should probably never leave the drawing table.
agee with the performance aspect of the board. when i first saw one, my initial thought was-as you said- " isn’t that a lot of unecessary wieght? won’t it bog it down? won’t the bottom feature - with it’s induction ports- create drag?" seems like a lot of negaitves involved just to gain some paddle power…
