Galveston / Surfside Get together

do you know how long of a drive it is from san antonio to galveston? if it’s less than three hours or so I could probally get a ride there…

san antonio is 2:30 to houston and 1 hr to galveston then 1 hr backwards to surfside… better to go straight to surfside… but i dont know the direction… im guessing aroun 3 1/2 hrs.

i just checked map quest and its way off… it said it takes 4 hours to go from san antonio to houston… ive made it in 3. If you want, drive to houston, ill meet you there and we can caravan to surfside from there. pm me in about a week or 2 when the time gets closer. I am also thinking on camping out one night on the beech if possible. not saying you have to, but soething for all of you guys to consider.

beach camping would be fun, I haven’t really been near the surfside area muchm, what island is it on?

its 1 hour south of the strand… cross the bridge… i consider it galveston since its so close

Scott,

Reports said flat, but I just got back from a first-hand see. It’s thigh-high clean and glassy with 86 degree water temp. For a 2 1/2 mile stretch along the seawall I counted a total of three guys out. Now it’s nothing to write home about to the guys on north shore Oahu in December, but it’s not to bad considering many coasts are summer flat as we usually are. Bottom line is that many times the surf reports are off or lazy and not posted for days, and you never know what’s out there til you get there. I’ll take lonely 80 degree waist high glassies over dodging crowds in hurricane spawned head-high + boilers in cold water. Storm swell isn’t always so swell.

By the way, stop in to Surf Specialties shop when you’re here and say hi to James. He’s the shop owner and the tanker surfer in “Step Into Liquid” . He’s got a nice collection of 60s classic boards and lots of new boards including some beauties by Michael Hynson and Gary Linden which they both shaped while visiting here on the island. Enjoy the ride!

ill stop by and say hi to him, also see if he has any dinged by old boards for under $200 he’s willing to let go. always good to expand my quiver and repair the old and forgotten boards.

Scott, I’ve got a couple of friends in Surfside. Older than you, longboarders. But super cool, very hospitable. Bob’s son is about 15 now so he might rip shorties & skims with you. Bob himself is the nicest guy you’d ever meet and will host anybody who wants to show up for a weekend surf. PM me if you want a phone #.

can you give him my e-mail address … scott.mucci@benham.com … if hes interested in going, have him e-mail me and ill give him my cell number… i cant find it at the moment so no point in calling a lost dead phone.

I make skimmers too, so if I can go (parent accepting, I’m only 15) then I’ll bring a few of my personal woodies and a foamie I had made ($60 to make the foamie, I thought that was awesome) and maybe my bonzer if it’s glassed and if a longboard if I shape one in time. It’ll be cool to see other peoples work and firsts in person.

you can convince them to let you come down, if they approve of your shaping, then tell them you will be learning invaluabe experience… heck… drag them along too. its always fun to watch parents try and surf.

Aloha Scott,

Your comment, “watch parents try to surf”…made me laugh.

I believe Skip Frye , one of the greatest living surfers, shapers, surf shop owners, and legends from the 60s, is now a great grandparent. You’d get a kick out of watching “Surfing For Life”, a movie in which guys up to 94 years old are kicking butts on boards. Many of the guys giving advice to the kids here on Sway are parents and grandparents. Sometimes grownups play hard too! Secret: Never get old and mostly…Enjoy the ride!

My dad surfed back in the 70’s and early 80’s but my mom made him give it up so he could spend time w/ us… still think it would be hilarious to see him try to get back on after so long.

Aloha Scott,

Some of my greatest times ever as a dad are the times spent surfing with my three grown kids in places like Hawaii and Costa Rica. My son called me last winter and dared me to meet him in costa Rica during his vacation time for a two week backpack along the Pacific coast. My wife who always encourages me to surf more, “made” me go. It was a 12 on a 10-scale bonding time.

Sounds like you’re presently a landlocked student, but have your Dad come meet you on your next surf trip and allow him to feel the stoke again. Your Mom should love the fact you guys found a new way to spend time together. I know several “old guys” that out surf any young guy in the water on any given day, so your Dad may even surprise you. It’s all part of enjoying the ride!

Richard

Out of curiosity… should i bring my tools with me, in case theres no surf… maybe a shaping day?

Scott, I have 7’x" 70’s style Rick gun. A little on the heavy side and a few small dings that you could cover with mylar or vinyl stickers until you could fix it. Maybe even put little dabs of silicone on the dings temporarily. That’s what some of the dings have on them now. (Disclaimer: the silicone was on it when I got it.) I can take a pic of it if you’re interested.

can you post a pic of it? also, whats reccommended waves to ride it on?

Do you know if he sell any crapped up old boards? i’m trying to buy old boards and repair them so I can add to my quiver and have a variety of boards to test with out spending my entire life savings.

shin high is good enough for me to ride my 6’4 thin board

anything smaller than that i ride my 6’9 - i can get the ankle biters with that

i’m pretty skinny though

I just emailed pics to you. It’s not that heavy. Around 10#. It’s a 7’6". You could ride it in any conditions. It probably likes bigger waves. It’s a single fin. Would be real good for mackin’ mexico, but it needs a little work.
