Glassing issue, advice please!

Hello everyone for my 5th board I decide to tackle a longboard. I glassed the bottom with 6oz E glass with no problems. My intensions were 4 + 6 on the top. I’m only 160 lbs, While laying out the top with the 6oz I ran out about half way…I guess I calulated that roll wrong. Anyway after running out I just finished the rest of the board with another layer of 4 oz. And of course the 6oz shows a little more color than the 4oz. Yep I should have just stopped. Live and learn. So should I just do another layer of the 6 oz across the whole top ? Any advice would be much appreciated.

It looks like you might have been able to center the 6 that you had, and then used the 4 to finish at the ends, in the gray areas, rather than in the middle of the board.  But it doesn't look bad enough to be worth worrying over.  Are you concerned about appearance, or strength?

Yeah huck I wish I would have thought about that. Little concerned about the strength of it. Not so much the looks or weight so I dont really mind doing another layer. If I do another layer will it all look the same? Thanks man

So the dark part is 4+6, the lighter part is 4+4?  I'd just do a 4 oz. deck patch if you're worried about strength.  I wouldn't worry about appearance - it gets waxed and pressure dented over time anyway, overall the board looks good!

Yep the dark is the 4+6. Ok I will do the deck patch, just for peace of mind. Thanks for the compliment and the great advice. Im pretty stoked about getting a longboard under my belt. Thanks again,Mitch

Yes, they're a challenge!  The first time I shaped a longboard, I was surprised at how much extra work all that foam entailed!  More foam, more work, more glass and resin, more chances for something to go wrong!  There are a few guys here, Gene Cooper and Ken Moore come to mind, that just build beautiful longboards.  After you've tried doing one, you'll appreciate a well done longboard all the more.

Amen to that. I lot of extra work and time. I was a little worried about the glassing so I went ahead and used the uv cure resin…life saver! For sure was a great experience so far. Feel way more comfortable now about doing another. Thanks again huck!

Also in the future, when doing deck or fin patches, dont go with a srtaight cut perpendicular to the stringer. For lack of a better description, this eventually becomes a "hinge" point. Cut the cloth in an arrow or dart fashion to eliminate this issue.

Thanks tblank for that little insight. That makes perfect sense. Will definitely remember that one for later. Thanks again fellas for the help.

Thought id post a few pics of the finished board. Its 9’ x 22 1/2" x 2 5/8". 5" nose rocker,3 1/2" rear. For the bottom contour i put a light teardrop up front, flat in the mid and a slight vee out the back. Have not had a chance to get it in the water yet. Hopepfully soon. Thanks again for the advice fellas.

Wow, that looks good. Nice job. Are the grey areas painted or different patches? The photo looks to suggest a pattern (at least on my conputer screen).

Thanks Doyle! It’s actually a nylon mesh I have been using as rail patches on my short boards. I thought I would add a little strength to the nose and tail, plus add a little something to the deck since I haven’t started color yet. Next board! You can get the stuff in variety of colors as well.

Thanks. I thought it looked to have a bit of pattern to it.

Looks nice!

Thanks yaar! Was a great experience!

Details on the nylon mesh.  What is it, and where do tou get it?

was thinking the same thing, i did a search online but dind’t find anything that good

+1

I would also like to see a picture of the other board(s) you have used this on.

I found a company that makes it in Fiberglass, Dyneema, Innegra, and some other exotic materials into a mesh.

If it comes through, I’ll post it up.
