Mako,
I hear you about Bay Head, the sand bar will kill you, I only get on it there at high tide, have you surfed Sea girt, Spring Lake, Belmar, Avon or Bradley Beach yet, it's a little more foregiving.

Tom,
Work takes me up to your area a few times each month. I have a major client that is based out of Point Pleasant Beach. I have explored as far up as Loch Arbour. BayHead is very convenient for me when I am up there so that's where I usually go. I had my best session of the winter on January 17th at the Inlet. Flawless waves, freezing cold and only a handful of people out trading waves with Scott Duerr.
Back on track with this thread. I just want to see pictures of gunnier shapes that people here have made or are riding.
While your thread heading asks for gun pictures, the waves in the vid only need a surfboard. You ask for an old man surfboard I humbly submit the style of boards i ride everyday. These range from 7'6 to 8'6" I'm 47, 6'2" 195-215lbs depending on my paycheck.

I don't want this to be another my dick is bigger than your dick sort of thread. All I wanted is a picture thread of guns and step up boards. Call them what you want. I am planning some traveling this year and I am looking for ideas for something to take on solid Wilderness in Puerto Rico or possibly some medium sized Sunset Beach or similar waves. I'm also looking to build a completely separate board for the waves in the picture and video. Call them what you want.
I was out this winter at my local beachie (which has been very very good) on one particular morning (bigger than the wave in your video but maybe not quite as dredging). I was struggling on my 6-0, missing waves and getting launched on others, having to nurse my bottom turns through slight chop at high speed. I switched to this-
All of sudden it was like a different ball game. In early, solid off the bottom, in control. What a difference.
7-1 x 20 x 2-1/2 I would call it a semi gun rather than a gun.
It has some…ahem…adhesion issues, so I plan on remaking it soon.
there’s a ton of them in the resources section…[img_assist|nid=1030349|title=fire board bottom|desc=|link=none|align=center|width=202|height=640]
for your beachbreak wave I’d probably be on something like the 7’3 above, myself… for “medium size” Sunset I’d be on something a bit longer for paddling speed (lots of water moving around out there)…but still thin enough to duck dive when need be (like the 8’3" below)… you don’t want to bail your board and kill somebody out there.
In any event, it has to be a red board, because red boards are faster!!!

Mako,
I think you are on the right track looking for two different types of boards. There is a group of older, veteran surfers in central Monmouth County who all ride long (8’+) Sunset style guns when it gets big in that area. With all due respect to those guys, those boards get them in very early and they pretty much go straight down the line. When they get barrels, it’s usually later on in the wave, not on the takeoff.
If you want to take the Sam Hammer high-performance approach and get in and under the lip from the get-go, then you need to go shorter. Sam and his buddies probably ride regular shortboards perhaps an inch or two longer with a round pin for the biggest Jersey gets. If you struggle with such a high-performance, low volume board, then I suggest you try something along the lines of what I posted above. It’s pretty specialized for steep, short-period, small-playing field waves. I have noticed alot of the Hatteras guys are going in this direction as well.
As for your PR/Hawaii board, I imagine those are much bigger playing fields with larger-radius wave faces where longer, more traditional guns are better suited.
I hope you are getting pumped up for Tuesday…

I've been flooded in all day today listening to the wind howl and the rain batter the windows. Bored to death. I'm hoping to head to CapeMay this evening or tomorrow morning to get a session in. There is a chance it could be good in the morning. Wind is supposed to die off over night then pick up again tomorrow afternoon.
I'm not looking for an old-man's board and I certainly don't want to go strait. Perhaps 5 years from now, but not yet.
Not really answering your query but might be interesting
here is my newest gun… small for outer reef standards but good for a starter. this board could handle 15ft surf (30ft) but ive only had it in maybe 10ft max. it doesnt really work good unless the waves are at 8ft or bigger otherwise ur not giving it full potential, this thing loves to work the big face and has incredible stability at high speed. charlie smith board, 8’5" length, 18.5 width, 2.5", heavy glass, glass on fins. i weigh in at a soaking wet 140lb… all these guys with there chippy boards, they dont understand big water. the question is not “can” u surf the wave on a smaller board, cuz u “can” surf it on almost anything. when im a half mile out the sea and its 20ft face, i want some board under me… this board feels almost too small out there sometimes… a lot of the big chargers out there are riding 9’6" to 10’4"s…
i have a kazuma 7’6" for 8ft waves that is really chippy, good for nearshore big surf, but not outer reef style. only thing i would change is like to have 5 finboxes, so i can run a quad or thruster. that versatility is really nice. my .02cents. aloha!
Akamai puinsai, that’s da bugga i needed the other day @ Pier 1,my 7.4 wasn’t cutting it!!!Patrick Fukuda was killin it on his longboard though.
patrick kills it. i was gonna paddle out there too, but i snapped my board at big lefts… (wasnt even that big, just inside section) pier one is an epic spot man… for guns and longboards both. one of my best big wave days was out there on a sean ordonez 9’0", didnt even get my hair wet! shoots!
two older mids from the islands
Guns can be fun. Now that I am a old guy I like bigger guns because they make it easy to get around.
9’0 x 20 x 3 Pin can be fun and super easy to handle the gun in the surf pic is a 7’6" x 19 1/2" x 19" Pin

I'm guessing that this wasn't exactly directed at me, because that's exactly what i gave you. The blue board is a step up Semi Gun / Big Guy tri fin...for a 200 lb + . The other board lives in Haleiwa, and is specifically made for Sunset, big Jocko's, or Lani's on a big N-NW swell. It's really not that big of a board when your paddling around Medium Sunset 6-8ft, and all the locals on the outside are on 9'6"+ Chapman Brewers. I take it that you have surfed Sunset before, so you know that it takes a hell of a lot of work to get into a wave there,
In the words of Craig Chapman as I finally made it back out to the line up after getting punished by an 8 wave set, because I missed the second wave of the train...... "8'6" won't get you shit out here"........my words to live by. I'm just an older... past his prime surfer...I'm no pro. But I like to catch my waves, not get punished by them.
Just my 10 cent's from one old guy to another...take it for what it's worth? Wasn't trying to be a my dick is bigger. It's just what i ride when thing start to get you attention.
That’s a nice board greenroomgrom. I spent many days in my prime out at Alii beach. Charlie ruled the place back then. There were a bunch of kids that eventually became great surfers like the foster brothers, terry terukina, and others, but charlie was unreal. I’ve seen him do things that were unbelievable, so much power. Haven’t heard his name for a while.
Charlie Smith is still da man.makes da kine surfboards.great guns and longboards, and inbetweeners. How about Tom Parrish?Still shapes, also guns, longboards, semi guns and hybrids.
One of my favorite all time boards was a 6-10 Charlie Smith. Nice to hear he’s still shaping. I’m thinking maybe James Jones could shape a really nice gun. Does he still shape?
