Gun Pictures Thread

Hey Kava, Parrish makes great boards, but I’ve never seen him surf like Charlie. Charlie was a madman! I’ve been out on a big days at Alii and while everyone was scratching and barely made it over those sneaky sets, Charlie just turned around and took off under the lip. Something that seemed impossible, but he made um. He was a BK type of guy, extremely powerful surfing and he’d takeoff on anything. I still like BK and Downing boards for traditional gun or semi-gun.

Booby was pretty crazy too. His guns seemed like they would be a bit stiffer.

Hi Mako
I was wondering what type of board you ended up making for the bigger north Jersey winter days. I live and surf north jersey and had a couple of session on the biggest days last winter that had me wishing for the right board in those conditions. Getting pitched by the lip then worked in the imapct zone in 38 deg water is not fun. I have few different ideas for a board to cover those 3-4 days a year but just wonering if you found something that worked. Im about 200# before the wetsuit and air dropping in like the better guys do has not proven to be a very succsessful option for me when its that big with the strong offshores.

thanks
Cal

“Mako,  for waves like the one in the video, I wouldn’t ride a 7’6” the
board is so long and that barrel so tight and round that you arn’t
really going to be able to surf the wave"

5’8" x 18 5/8" x 2 3/8" for INDO = Surfer is 36

HUNTINGTON BEACH - SOUTH SIDE

Aloha Tom,

Since this thread resurfaced, I hope you will post a photo of the more recent ‘‘Red Bolt Gun’’ that you made.     That board IS the real deal.

Hi alamax:

After a Double Cheese Burger:

Very forgiving!

Kind regards,

surfding

Thanks Surfding

That looks good, very close to what I had in mind. I figure I’ll order up a 7’7"A blank, a few cheesburgers and get to work.

Thanks
Cal

LeeD very well put!

My kid as well as most of his crew ride 5’8" to 6’3" depending on the conditions.

Choppy, Glassy, Off Shore?

7’6" is what I like however I’m a old has been.

Lived on the North Shore 70’s early 80’s.

The Haloes rode a little longer boards than MICHAEL Ho even back in the day.

He still rips today and rides a much shorter board than most.

Many of the pro’s are riding shorter boards.

For the Week-end warrior foam is your friend.

Kind regards,

surfding

+1 for TomEberly Lightning Bolt semi guns…

Most of the pics on this thread need a 6’ tri fin to ride, not a gun.

  Should we define “gun” boards?

10’ to 11’6" … elephant guns, sitting waay outside, pure paddle power, moderate performance…  Like RickyGriggs yellow Sunset board.

9’ to 10’ …traditional full gun, best in 18-30’ waves, late drops, vert surfing starting.  Boobie’s board at Wiamea, the red one, was 9’ 10" long, supposedly.

8-9’…semi guns for big, not huge waves, in the 10-20’ range…Jeff Hakman’s Sunset board.

7-8’ …mini guns for surf most surfer’s max out in, maybe overhead to 10’ … talking vertical height

6-7’ …micro guns for small, steep, barrels, like Pipe for overhead right up to 10’ vert, for performance fast waves

5’8" to 6’6"… towin boards for any sized wave, up to 45’ vertical, usually multi finned, usually heavier than 15 lbs.

Of course, some guys like MikeHo would choose a 6’6" for 15’ Sunset, but he sat inside and played the chess game.

That’s a 7’4" “Lightning Bolt inspired” I made some time ago:

Very nice lines.

Thank you, Bill. Very much appreciated, coming from you.

On a bigger scale, how do you like this one?

Man, that thing looks to be 12 foot or 12 foot 6.     Sleek looking.    Good looking Turtle Glyph too.

…hello Balsa; may I ask what models of blanks did you used for both shapes?

Im asking cause I see on one of the photos a Surfblanks Brazil and I have the gun model in my wshop right now but I do not see too much tolerance to make a classic gun more like a slim modern one.

Thanks

You’re right, Bill: 12’3". bigger blank I could get and I used every inch of it (12’3" Burford blank). Turtle kindly sent by UncleD.

Hi Reverb. As said above, the mega-gun was shaped out of a 12’3" Burford blank. The “Bolt” must have been made from another burford blank but I sincerely don’t remember which one. I had a few Surfblanks Brazil for a time but that was before my retailer started distributing Arctic Foam blanks which I use almost exclusively now. A few US Blanks, too, and still a few Burford blanks; And I still have four or five old Walker blanks in stock that I keep for special orders…

Surfding, Post more photos of that sunset gun.

Balsa. Now those boards are pintails. Not confused in anyway with a round pin.

I need to finish the glass on fin = BLACK with a CLEAR Halo.

When I have her done I post more.

Thanks artz!

Kind regards,

surfding

Surfding, how much time did you spend getting those side T-bands to match the rails?

This gun makes me shiver… Great work.

Artz, I always loved pintails. Purer outline there is, IMHO.

By the way, here is my latest glider. Not a gun, but a pintail for sure. 12’3", too:

Manfique! Monsieur Balsa.  A work of Art.  Personally I’m a round pin man.
