Beautiful boards mate, great work.
Quote:Enter the CNC shaping machine…
A wonderfull mass producing, simi exact replicating, almost automatic, board carving extravaganza. And ,yes its a tool…
But its a tool that pretty much needs very little (if any) human attention. the skills required from the human would be …
Clamp the rough blank in the fixtures, enter the shape information into the computer program, hit the go button, repete for the other side, trim excess, lightly sand then get someone else to glass it. Stand there and say look what I made… sort of
Wrong, wrong and wrong. Ever tried shaping a board without even seeing the thing? Also with CNC shaping there’s no stop starting and fixing things along the way. You can’t redraw an outline once the machine starts. Once it’s going that’s it. Get it wrong and your going to have an ugly board on your hands.
To me hand shaping is blending the curves once the donkey work is done. Blending the bottom contours into the rails, rails into the deck etc is what I consider hand shaping to be. And the rest is about eighty percent donkey work in my experience.
CNC just takes care of all the eighty percent leading up to it. If you know how to draw that is and drawing is an art form. Even in a surfboard shaping program.

why would you take half of my post and reply to it eroniously?
I wasnt saying that useing the CNC is the same as hand shaping
far from it was my point.
My point was ,if you use a CNC and cannot revert back to the use of hand tools to shape, then your not a shaper in the true sense.
Ive been posting my personaly hand shaped and personaly glassed boards throughout this forum

Huie. I started my handywork by fairing a 14.6m schionning cat. lots of work lots of dust lots of hard work. It was after that I had a mal shaped by Lawrie Hohensee. a master of his craft by no means. I saw his process and went , I can do this. so this is what I do.
HAND SHAPERS UNITE. go hard huie …
what blows me away about huie
he was the first in noosa making boards…shortboards in 67
a great traditional builder that has influenced the whole industry
and instead of restin on that
hes still making the lightest, most durable (did i say great finished)boards in the world
in his 60s no less
and the most helpful person ive met on swaylocks
Hear hear!
This man has the knowledge
And has been very generous with sharing it with me, thanks Huie…
Now wheres me f*ckn blanks
Everyone make sure you have a few feet of clear space around you when you find out what Huie is up to…
Then you can run round like a headless chook and not crash into anything
compsand 4 to 5 pounds white machine shaped
I went to check out your boards on your site but couldn’t find them.
Do you have a link so that I can view your boards. Much appreciated.

Hey Huie
I missed this thread first time around. I hope those that were slinging shit then are having a look now and like the polish on that cedar? board as much as I do !!
If you have the time and the inclination maybe some might be ready to learn how to get their planshapes looking that nice also.
I would.
Is that one of the new blanks with a balsa skin ?
Cheers
