HIGH TECH - LOW TECH -WHAT THE HECK?!!

Yeah, its coming.  I knew that the first time I saw one of those little self-propelled radio controlled surfer toys.  First thought I had was, how long until they do this full size.  No, I don't like it.  Cute how you categorize anyone who doesn't want one as "stuck in the past".   Always easier to deal with life if you can trivialize and dismiss people who don't think the same as you with broad negative generalizations.

I think that it is inevitable that we will see more and more self propeled boards, a few months ago on sways there were videos of boards made by.. (sorry brain fart ).    with small battery powered electric motors in them that allowed you to cruise out to the line up without paddling and to motor into waves at twice your paddling speed and although not cheap at about $2000 also not prohibitivly expensive , the boards were in the 20lb range also not out of the ballpark heavy . I was recently reading about new generations of electronics that are both more powerfull and lighter and more compact than those available to us at the present . Imagin being able to zip out to the outside reefs on your self powered board and dropping in all without ever paddling a stroke you wont need a smelly jet ski you wont need some one to tow you , the technoligy will change from board construction to the development of faster motors , longer battery life , there will be self homing devices so if you lose your board it will return to you , it will change everything as we know it , the question is will you embrace it ? Who doesnt want to go faster... longer... harder  (whoops sorry about that got carried away for a moment, sounds like a Viagra ad)   If it was available Jan 1 2012 at $1000 a pop ,in any shape your heart desired , would you ? OR are YOU stuck in the past ?  In my opinion it IS coming it IS inevitable it IS the future of surfing and it will be great . I want one .
If that's the road you intend to go down with your surfing, freedom of choice is on your side....personally I'm not the slightest bit interested in that sort of thing......have fun

haaa they said al that 30 yrs ago look how close they have come a jet ski to tow a board at best haaaaaaaaa’‘’

High Tech for me would be a board that is made of %100 percent biodegradable materials that can either be broken down naturally or recycled, I know there are plenty of examples out there already but im still waiting for my ‘potato starch’ based foam that shapes and performs as good as if not better than a Pu…

Im with Kayu on the motorised board, if you wanna do that then get a jet ski:), there is something great about the simple powerless glide of a surfboard harnessing only the power of the ocean.

P/U polyester boards are a good environmental option if they are built properly, and built to last......proven fact ..there's plenty of boards from the 60's and 70's still around in mint condition........, and damaged ones that are well worth the effort to restore.......IMO we need to get over this pro-board ultra-light bullshit..simple

Lotta truth in that.  This is my buddy Bruce - the board in the pic is homebuilt, over 20 years old, and still looks great.

Wow. The light bulb just went on.

YOU coined the phrase, I’ll give you a cut of my new sportswear:

The logo is a big “I” and the letters surrounding  it are… WAS THE…CLUB.

MYRA! GET HAROLD ON THE PHONE,WE GOT A COMPANY TO BUILD!!!

Well spoken.

“IMO we need to get over this pro-board ultra-light bullshit…simple”

4.5 pound/2.04 Kilos = For a PRO Contest board fine.

However it is a vain pursuit.

I made a board for a INDO trip and it weigh 6 pounds with fins, pad and leash.

The guy loved it.

When making boards you have consider the type of surfing to be performed.

Exceptions:

15 pound Tow Boards are pretty standard otherwise the light one’s don’t work well in macking surf.

5.0 pounds and under for High Performance Shortboards Head High and smaller surf.

High Tech Enough:

Vacuum bagged 1# EPS with S-cloth and carbon fiber rail band on the light ones.

Low Tech:

The Classics keep them heavy and beautiful and use Volan.

12 pounds or 5.44 Kilos for a 10 footer.

What the Heck:

It’s all relative!

Kind regards,

surfding

Here’s my decompression chamber for after shaping:

Nice room to have a mojito while listening to the theme of The Endless Summer, love those paintings, especially the inside the right hand tube view!

http://vimeo.com/10086384  The future of the surfboard is in the past !!

awesome thats classic

well a few years back i used to work with Greg Mungell helping make boards, he was making these “power rods” witch was fiberglass rope twisted and shaped in a cretin way to make it strong and flexible, then we would route out the boards on the deck and belly and insert them in a stringerless blank, we made one for a pro and while he was surfing it out at sunset he told use how he did a huge air and then landed on the flats and he should have went right through the board but it barely had a dent, i was always impressed by how well those boards held up, the one that i have only has two little dents in it and it is about 3 years old

has anyone else done anything similar with good results  ?

With so many people being attacked by sharks of late I really like the idea of electrical Shark repellant devices mounted in surfboards.

These would probably work best in composite surfboards to take advantage of using the core to house the mechanics.  Also its going to be expensive so hopefully the board would last longer.

Or maybe 3D printing technology will reach a level where the machines can make complete finished surfboards?

Bespoke manufacturing for surfboards is down the road a ways, but.....
There's two types of tech.....tech that is an improvement.......and tech that panders to people who couldn't be bothered gettin off their arse to do anything anymore..........stop panicking when the batteries in the TV remote go flat.!

Sorry Kayu I just saw something on 3D printing a while ago
and thought it was pretty amazing.

What about 3D print a hollow wire framed board then glass
it traditionally for strength.  Different internal frame designs could alter
the weight, flex pattern ect…?

The idea was on sways first!! Someone will do it and put a patent on it now, or not do it but still put a patent on it haha!!
