historic surf shop photos

Hey guys (and gals)  I am hoping to enlist your help.  I need photos of old surf shops, the older the better. What I need is the facade.  Something like this-

If youcould also provide some info about the shop that will be helpful too.

In case you wonder what I’m up to, you can see my art here -     Jeff Matsuno  - and get a pretty good idea.

I’ve had little luck doing internet searches.  I’ve contacted some surf publications and got no response.

If you have any other ideas where to look let me know…

Thanks!

Here’s a few

Thanks Johnny, those are great.  Perfect for what I’m planning.

What’s the logo on the pleasure point surf shop?  I recently saw that one somewhere.

No problem Jeff. I think it’s Marc Andreini’s logo, not 100% sure.

Here’s another, Greek Surf Shop, OC with a car through the front.

That would be White Owl, or later just Owl Surfboards - http://www.lastwave.com/legends/owl-surfboards

I seen to remember ads in the early Surfer Mags. occasionally would feature shots of shops.

I was thinking that photo was from the 50’s looking at the car, but then I noticed the boards look late 70ish.

Thanks guys keep em coming…

Dave Sweet’s is now a Mexican restaurant.  Con Surfboards (824 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica) is a plumber.

This was the first one that came to mind when I read this thread. However, the Wardy shop was at 525 Forest Ave in Laguna Beach. He had another location in Pasadena, but I’m pretty sure that’s the Laguna shop.

Where’d you find these photos, dropknee?

Right you are, Sammy: my bad!  That IS the Laguna Beach shop.  The Pasadena shop was at 806 Colorado Blvd.

The 1963 photos are from that old Petersen “Surfing Yearbook” and the shot of George’s #3 is from Surfer Magazine, Vol. 9, #5 (1968).

I bought my very first board from that Sweet shop in 1961.  It was a total POS, but as a 12-year-old kook, what’d I know?  Old Dave himself gave me the razzle-dazzle and I plunked down my hard-earned $45 of lawn-mowing money…

I’ll see if I can dig up some other photos when I get time.

For fun, look up those addresses in google street view. Some of the buildings are still there.

There was also a Wardy shop in SF, for a while. Near fisherman’s wharf on Columbus Ave.

See bottom of this ad:

From 1961:

Sammy,

At one time, Wardy also had a short lived shop in Honolulu. From my small kid days, I seem to remember that Lopez rode one when he was young and unknown outside of Oahu.

Some of these shots really bring back the memories....

I was one of the kids prowling thru' the several South Bay shops back in the day and got my first board and first custom at 422 PCH.

So, I was trying to find a photo of a particular shop using Google image search. Waste of time.

However, I did stumble across this photo.

Where’s Doc? I’m sure he could ID these characters.
