We’ve been getting into a to a lot more colored foam recently as a few customers were asking for us to incorporate that option. We are pleased with the vibrancy and intensity of the colors we’ve put on line so far so I thought I’d post a few pictures of some of our unshaped blanks to let all know that black, red, yellow, blue and orange are now available in custom orders. We are working on other colors and should be adding to this selection shortly. The colored foam is a high density variant of our Mowses formula.
We haven’t tried it in the Cane formula yet. Some Cane tests are scheduled for next week.
As for entire blanks we are not currently offering that as a regular option but if someone asked we could give it a go. The demand so far has strictly been for stringer material and we are well set up for that.
Our standard “high density” stringer is blown at 4.5 pound density. We have done the colored foam at lower densites upon request. For instance, the wedge cuts were ordered in a “regular” blank density due to the large piece. In other cases people have used the high density foam as a stringer without using any wood along with it. (A picture of the red foam without wood can be seen in the pictures of the Terry Martin shaped Simmons inspired boards that were posted on the “Simmons Influence” thread that is in general discussion on page 4 of that thread.)
I like that you can do larger pieces of the colored foam in regular density. This opens up a lot of options for us. How do you calculate cost on these?
For instance, I’ve got an order for red panels right now…these can be tricky to tape off. They need to be 6" out from center. Your feature sure could make life easier!
Prices depend on how it’s used and length of board but follow our basic up-charges for custom stringers and t-bands. Often we are supplying this in a T-band that’s either wood-foam-wood or foam-wood-foam. With all the possible permutations of woods, foams, thicknesses, colored glue, special cuts, shape, etc it’s hard for me to give a simple answer to the cost question. For instance, replacing a wood stringer with a simple single colored foam stringer is not that much but when we were asked to do a big wedge cut, with tapered cedar stringers on either side then the costs go up do to the extra labor and materials needed to assemble the blank accurately. We’re happy to quote whatever creative concept you come up with.
Etmo, this sounds like the stuff of a foam makers nightmare. I hadn’t thought of that one yet. I look forward to trying it. I’ll add a blue/yellow swirl test to the test schedule for next week to see if it’s possible unless you had a different two color combo you would like to suggest.
We have supplied this down to 1/8" thicknesses. Someone had done some wood and foam t-bands for some fish blanks: 1/8" blue-1/8" basswood-1/8"blue foam. Looked pretty cool. No one’s asked for thinner yet.

Well, since I opened my mouth, I guess I had better back it up…
Blue and yellow might open up too many fresh wounds for the Chargers fans down here, so maybe switch it to violet (if that’s online) and yellow or blue and orange.
Make it a stringerless 6’6" HPS and I’ll pay Chris when he delivers it, if that’s OK.
Remember to read the “Show us your resin tints and swirls” thread before you go at it, and Use The Force! :>)
Very funny regarding the blue and yellow. I hadn’t thought of that but as a fool who had Raider’s tickets for the ten years they were in LA you’re lucky we don’t have silver yet. (I remember a time when it wasn’t embarassing admitting that.)
Orange and blue are the colors of our logo so maybe that’s a go. I have read the tints and swirls thread and appreciate the perspective. I only wish it was so easy with foam.
One HPS 6-6 stringerless on the way. PM me or email Chris with the stringer thickness you would like to see and I’m assuming you want the 4.5 lb density.
