I picked up this fish a couple of years ago on craigslist. I had read that Clyde Beatty partnered with 9fish and was making poputs but I thought this was a pre-poput board. A friend recently told me otherwise. I figure one of you guys might know. The only handwritten markings other than the dims are in the picture below.
Clyde is a tremendously talented craftsman and artist, but the allure of China, seduced him and his secrets quite some time ago. Contingent necessity, he probably surmised. I hope he stays there. Never the best at keeping his word.
popout vs mass produced seems to be the question? made by craftsman who surfs and understands what he’s building or guys who is real good at making a copy without understanding why.
actually, if your happy with the way the board rides, then it’s all good, right?
i don’t think clyde is building any boards in the USA at this time or in the recent past, so it’s at least foreign build…
This would be true except the whole reason the topic came up with my friend was him saying “what do you expect for a China board and their poor resin quality” when I was complaining about big cracks showing up on both rails for no reason. Anyway its fun to ride but its falling apart so I think I’ll dump it.
That is because china no kea about quality, just takie away American business, like python. When he did the Yater’s he had to answer to Renny, and now he answer to you know. Hu.
F china, and the shitwads that sold out. Traitor communist bastards all of them. Selling out to the enemy; now that is something to b proud of. That guy has been chuggin and slurpin, for you know…Hu.
if it affects you, it's different, let me apologise to China as a country, no apologies to the guys who sold out, H. doubt if you will ever see anyone put their life into shaping a keyboard or a car, I drive a ford or a holden.
A good call harris, though their only crime is to be very good at copying stuff. I think a lot of them are very good with their hands, and in their case, they probably don't give a f*ck that they upset people on the other side of the world for some shitty patriotic reason, they are probably trying to feed their families. We would all do the same in their circumstance.
The shapers who send their stuff there are taking a big gamble though, look at the GSI thread not long ago. Spend all that cash on a new board, and its a piece of shit. I bought a china board, right price. Sold it not long after, my home made board ( no.2 ) went so much better i didn't surf it too much.
I have made my own boards for the last 37 years, my younger brothers got tested on earlier, I was riding a Reno shape, hey why wouldn't I, see other threads, all I can say is pretty much what you said, number 2 goes better, but it's your ride. I paid , well not the ultimate penalty, but I got smashed bigtime and it made a big difference to my shaping and surfing career, by riding my own board in the 81' pipe masters. I will always come down on the shaping machine and people who try take over the world using them. China would not be on the surfing scene without them and I don't care what anyone says about they handshape now, bla fucken bla, the master craftsmen will be gone, then that will be that, H.
Its such a global problem or is it just a choice these days... but local and pay ( fuck I hate W7) more or just buy whats in the store.

To me, it's not where it's made, it's who does the making. It pisses me off that all these overseas boards made by people who have never seen the ocean are potentially putting fellow surfers out of work or, at the very least, affecting surfboard manufacturers' bottom line.
Beerfan, People who can surf, have dedicated their lives to making surfboards, laboring in less than ideal conditions, not for the money, but to make a better surfboard, and put a few smiles on people faces. After seeing the board you posted up just think how long it would take you to get good, and then when you do, and if that is all possible, your mate takes your idea to the cnc, and helps to put you out of business. Shop owners had to deal with the hot-shot shapers, glassers, sanders, polishers, and artists, on “surfer time”. Now they wait for shipping containers to clear customs. Beerfan you will get no respect from me until you get two turns, and a wipeout, and put enough time in to appreciate what guys go through just to get good at this. And guess what their boards are crap, but how would you know?
Point taken, but wondering if it is at all different than American shops using a Mexican labor force? Several surfboard builders in the area here use guys from Mexico who don’t surf at all, or could give a shit if you have a good time in the ocean. American contractors hire emigrant workers because they work for less, bottom line. Look around.
A few of the Americanos that I’ve seen locally putting in your fin boxes crooked were full blown tweekers who had an excuse a mile long, then called from county jail asking for a second chance.
How many sanders make your rails weaker instead of strong? It’s all realitive, but for the retailer, there is more than twice the profit margin in that China made PU twinfin. Go ask the shop owner that has it’s logo on the board.

Yes, i see your point, and im aware of how people get ripped off.

Im very aware of the skills of great shapers, it is craftmanship full stop. I really don't care if i get respect from you or anyone honestly. My signature is a take off of the famous terry fitz quote " surfing for most people is two turns and a wipeout" Haha, get it?
And guess what their boards are crap, but how would you know?
