Joel Tudor's new label

http://www.kookboxx.com/

Neat shapes I thought you guys would like and great video clips (plus the opening sequence theme song is Neil Young).

Site needs clips of him riding the cool shapes. Cool outside-the-box stuff.

…give it a couple of days until monthly bandwidth caps reset.

hahahaha

So how does Janklow rate to be able to get the site? Secret govt agent?

Hit the “shorter trailer” button and there’s a teaser for the new movie with some of his funky shorties being ridden.

Surfermag thread drove traffic over his bandwidth limit this AM I guess.

The shapes are worth saving the link for later, some neat stuff, but jeez, bandwidth limits?

It’s working again for me. Check it out.

joel tudor is a freak. not like kelly but a freak in his own right.

Yawn.

Celebrating this kind of retrograde devolution is probably a fair kind of pyschic signpost of why America is in the gutter right now.

Watching Joel almost get barrelled on hopelessly outdated equipment seems to me the perfect ensign of the American zeitgeist.

In the sixties and seventies it actually had meaning .

Now it’s just a lame parody.

No offence to those making a living off it.

It’s as valid as any other harmless snake oil.

Yep…forward to yesterday. However…I can still appreciate the kids talent. Even if it does come off a bit pretentious at times.

"The sky is blue and so is the sea.

What is the color when black is burned?

What is the color?"

Buffalo Springfield

That takes me back a few summer sessions.

Joel is still pushing boundaries on old style gear.

Why? Because who is to say those boundaries have all been totally defined?

He is still an innovator with a 70’s inquisitive nature. And he was the only currently top ranked pro with enough courage to get behind MVGs. Tell me that doesn’t take guts.

He has since moved on and that’s okay, too. Comes with the territory.

Nor does he define himself by putting others down for what or how they choose to ride. He does his own thing.

I admire that quality. But then I too was a child in the 70’s.

MVG’s ???

Mini Vortex Generators.

Can’t see any innovation there. I might be missing something but all i see is totally recycled.

I would love to see Joel put his own spin on those concepts…we might actually move forward then.

He seems totally in a comfort zone to me…I don’t see any progression…just smooth surfing to groovy soundtracks: visual prozac I guess to a stressed out populace.

Sure Joel is way too elevated in consciousness to give a shit about anything but he’s a business and if the kids stopped digging his act he might be forced to get his hands dirty and that brings anyone back to reality.

After just spending a couple of weeks in G-land and seeing a whole bunch of hard-core surfers, riding all sorts of equipment, laying it down with no expectation of a payday or recognition it’s hard to get excited about Joel inc’s new “brand”.

No offence to the bloke.

He’s a public business , this is a public forum, it’s just an opinion.

Steve

I’m sorry, he’s just trying to stay relevant. His longboard shtick has been taken over by others, and the retro thing got away from him so now he starts a site and company to compete with the Mollusk-Marshall’s movement.

YAWN!

Well said. Similar to the Hull trip and the rest of the BS here, me included.

Two separate topics, the man and the brand.

sometimes it’s hard to distinguish between the two.

One time I met another top pro and I felt like I was talking to a multi-national corporation and a brand and a man all at the same time. And to top it off I was hearing the exact same words I had heard from his shaper coming from his mouth. Trippy. So many images. On one level they only existed in my mind, but I was aware enough to perceive them.

It’s all a matter of perception and everyone has their own ego trip. No exceptions. That is why

I prefer to live an let live.

Ha Ha…leave it to eastpac to give us the quote of the year so far. Good stuff.

I think his lines are cool, and his boards are cool, and if neither one pay any attention to the “current state of the art” it doesn’t bother me. “Retrograde devolution” assumes a unidirectional timeline rather than a spectrum that people can add to at all its points. EPac points up the hull thing for en example. Fish are another one. Mollusk? I like a lot of different kinds of surfboards and several different kinds of surfing. I don’t give a darn about fashion of any kind, just an ever-fuller spectrum of surfing and surfboards. I had nothing of any retro fashion bullshit in mind when I started the thread. Just the spectrum. I hadn’t even thought of it in any other way.

Actually…he is just a smooth surfer that looks pretty good on whatever he rides. I see no boundaries being pushed really. Single fin surfing pushed major boudaries in the early eighties, yet folks want to go back to when singles were all we had and forget we were all pretty happy to get off those type of singles. There was progression made and is still being made on singles, but not with boards that are exact knock offs of bad equipment.

I would say the retro movement as it pertains to your average surfer has if anything made it cool in some cirlces to be a sub par surfer that simply rides straight and only knows how to do one or two moves. Rarely do I see much that impresses me outside of the few surfing good on that stuff. I think the fact that the boards float well is the magic folks are claiming they have with that stuff. It’s acceptable to have thickness on retro shapes, but surfers tend to frown on thickness on more contemporary designs.

Lennox76 did ok too as far as quotable 1 liners: “just smooth surfing to groovy soundtracks”

Nothing wrong with that. Kinda my goal in life actually. Don’t need to prove my balls are bigger than yours or my rad is more bad than yours, Dad. Jaggy and jerky and oooooo look how bad he his just doesn’t really thrill me much. If you can’t feel the goodness in just the zen of smooth blend that’s ok. Have another cuppa and grind your teeth some more. I have a dentist friend and and a gastroenterologist friend and even a cardiologist friend who are waiting in line to serve you what and when you have need. Just say “Gaaaakkkkkk!!!”

Peace out from the groove lounge
