Lindsey Lord, a PHD from MIT

Does andybody know where to get copy of Lindsey Lord’s writings that influenced Bob Simmons?

I would like to read his writings.

Thanks

Naval Architecture of Planing Hulls, Lindsay Lord, Cornell Press, 1954. Try Powells Books, in Portland, Ore. San Diego Yacht Club has a copy in their library.

Simmons drowned at Windansea, in La Jolla, in 1954.

Did Simmons read before Linsey Lord’s writings before he was published?

Thank you so much for the information. I found a used copy in good condition. Can’t wait to read it!

Any other good reads let me know?

Zowie!

Bill - what were the Circumstances of his drowning? What time of year?

Thanks

Bill knows more than I but Legend in the line up is that it was a good size day at simmons reef and he got stuck in one of the caves. I have swam down there with a mask and it seems possible. Simmons is the hollow right just north of Wind and Sea. One of my favorite waves but a board breaker. Hope this helps Bill would no more.

Bill my friend I use to work at south coast with had a board of yours with 2 foiled fins where a single would be I really liked the idea and the shape, He wouldn’t let me ride it :frowning:

e-pac,

Simmons died Sept. 26, 1954. I’m told it was during an outstanding big southswell. Most likely case, hit by his own board, or someone elses loose board. I started surfing at Windansea in 1955, nine months after his death. It contributed to the mystique of danger, about Windansea, that put many people on edge when in the water there. Me included, in the beginning.

Surfding,

Simmons had access to Lindsay Lords papers on planing hulls, as early as 1946. This was research done during WWII, for the U.S. Navy.

Girvin,

Dave, from Ireland, who also worked there, owns that board.

Is the fin set up he’s describing similar to the two-box single you had at the workshop?

I’m finishing up a single now and was considering putting in double boxes.

Yep it was Dave’s board. He worked for Jeff mccallum who helped me get into shaping.

It is the same system. Two FU boxes, on two inch centers. Mid-line of each box, one inch off the mid-line of the board.

will this require licensing fees or a Designed by Thrailkill logo near the boxes?

; )

Donate one dollar to Resinheads ‘‘kill the seals’’ fund.

if it means more dead seals then I’ll make it two.

Is Lords writing relatively accessible for those not well versed in the terminology of physics and hydrodynamics? If not is there essays on the subject that are easily digested by us laymens? Thanks guys

None that I’m aware of, that could be relied upon. Best bet is to struggle with the real thing. (Lords writings) Keep a dictionary handy, for those terms you are not familiar with. You may surprise yourself.

The book arrived today. Old, however in good condition. Just starting to read it. It’s actually pretty clear. I can see were Simmons would be inspired by Lords writtings. I was lucky to find a copy.

Do you mind shareing what it cost? PM, if you don’t want to go public. I had a chance recently to examine a Simmoms single fin spoon. Lots of very subtle stuff going on in the shape, especially the rail treatment. Seeing his boards, and especially reading research that inspired him, is a way to get into his head. If that were really possible to do. Just a glimpse would be interesting enough.
