Ouch!.. sorry to hear about the elbow. bruised my hip about a month ago doing the same thing. Well ill keep posted, cant wait to see the finished product!
And if you need a test pilot… I would love to give it a go!
so i glassed on the fins and i grabbed a bottle full of styrene to thin out the resin a bit but when i went to grind down the edges it sanded nice and easy with lots of dust so i must have grabbed the wrong bottle and added surfacing agent instead but i think it shouldnt matter too much

when i hot coat boards i like to do a double coat on the rails
so first ill pour alittle bit of resin on the deck then squeegee the resin all over the board then squeegee all the resin off the board, this helps pick up any little bits of dust and fills any little hole
[img_assist|nid=1064367|title=lis fish resto|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=331|height=223]
[img_assist|nid=1064368|title=lis fish resto|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=335|height=226]
then ill just hot coat the rails
[img_assist|nid=1064369|title=lis fish resto|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=337|height=227]
once the rails are hot coated then i take it out side for a few seconds ( using uv resin)and let the resin gel up a little bit then ill bring it back inside and hot coat the whole deck, so now i have two layers of resin on the rails witch helps out alot when sanding the rails

After the first coat gels do you use a brush on the second coat? Seems like a good method to me. I always get some weave showing on the rails no matter how careful I sand. Mike
Do you ever have problems with separation/flaking in the double hot coat? Or, do you disturb the surface of the first layer enough so the wax doesn’t form a barrier? I know that in most applications, one hotcoat on top of another creates bonding and flaking issues.
hey Sammy, i have never had any bonding or flaking issues with this method
when i was shown this trick i was told that as long as the resin is still in a some what gel state that when you add the next layer that the two will bond together fine and its been working out for me for quit some time now
i remember a while back taking about this subject with i think Bill T or getto rat ( i cant really remember) and they do the same proses except they use lam resin for the first coat, wait till that kicks then use sanding resin for the final coat which is definitely the safer route to take but like i said its been working out great for me
generally a restoration will add weight but in this cause it has dropped the weight down
when i first got this board it weighed around 20 pounds, after sanding the board all the way down to the wive and taking the fins off it weighed around 8 or 9 pounds, now that its to hot coat it weighs around 12 or 13 pounds
The restore looks great and thanks for walking us through your process, can’t wait to see the finished board. Since Sparky (InterIsland Surfboards) passed recently I have been approached to restore a 9-2 from the 70’s. Not sure how I am going to handle keeping his signature on the board, and filling in the pressure dents on the deck, but I am studying it right now. glad I hook on to this thread.
theres been a little bit of progress but it has definitely been on the back burner for some time now
so i had the board to hot coat then i sanded it all back down with some 80 grit and did the pin line
[img_assist|nid=1065809|title=lis fish resto|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=449|height=663]
then i tape it off
[img_assist|nid=1065810|title=lis fish resto|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=453|height=669]
now shot on the resin pin line
[img_assist|nid=1065811|title=lis fish resto|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=449|height=663]
i use a lot of pigment mixed in the resin so to make sure it goes off properly ill add a drop of DMA and a drop of cobalt and then the normal amount of MEKP
from what i was told about this stuff is that the DMA heats up the resin a bunch so it kicks off fast and the cobalt make it cure properly
but you have to be careful with this stuff cause if mixed unproperly you can make yourself a little bomb
after doing the pin line then ill sand it down just a little bit then clean the board and tape it off for the gloss coat
my pics of the glossing got erased some how but here is what it looks like right now
[img_assist|nid=1065814|title=lis fish resto|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=496|height=733]
[img_assist|nid=1065816|title=lis fish resto|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=498|height=736]
[img_assist|nid=1065817|title=lis fish resto|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=498|height=336]
so now i just need to polish it out
sorry about the bad pics but i have no idea how to shot good photos
but im taking the next couple of days off so hopfuly some time next week ill have the final product done but for now im getting ready to do some repairs, glassing a couple of boards, go catch some surf, and FISHING, the yellow tail are back in town
