My "fish"....SOME of the fin setups [photos]

sorry if I’ve maybe posted this before ? [I forget / lose track ]

A few people have asked me about “The Prawn” , so … here goes …

" the Prawn ", pre-finning and legrope plugging (next to a Shaun ‘the prawn’ Tomson winged twinny, a la M.R.'s template )

and, next to a Len Dibben twinny (roughly the template I used …the Prawn was originally a 6’4 winged swallowtail single fin …“Strapper” surfboards )…there’s a slight “bump” in the outline where the wing was…

It was first made with a 10" back fin box , as I knew I would want to ride it as a single fin to start with …

( this photo was taken at the end of 2004, after the board had been caned for a solid two and a half years , and the outside [2nd ] set of plugs were added …but I’m getting ahead of myself here .)

single fin setup

twin FIN setup

twin KEEL setup

the prawn ““ROCKS””

“YOU ROCK”

thruster”…

Awesome!!!

(there are also “2+1” setups I’ve tried…small side fins 2-3" x 2 - 3" , with a 6-7" back fin… no photos, though …)

four finner ....

 [for a small grom]

four finner

[ for an adult ]

five finner

THIS is a fun four fin setup too , minus the back fin …

okay, as the heading suggests , these are only a couple of handfuls of the MANY options available…

back fin … big or small , or same size as the others

side fins … big or small , or same size as the others .

“WILDY” … Not tried yet [although, the fin box may be a bit short ??] …"inline single fin " / SIX fin setup…

There are so many options ! I have HEAPS more fins to try yet ....more than are in this 2 year old photo...

[these were the first keels and fins I ever made for it…some are pre-foiling , in this pic]]

…If this board breaks , I’ll make ANOTHER one , with all these plugs again !

bonus thruster setup photo …

Wow!

Now - what I’d like to hear are your observations – ie different effects for diff positions/setups… I’m sure you’re the man for the job!

oh dear …

I was afraid someone would ask the obvious …

wow , well …where to start ?

let’s see …single fin …I like … twins …I like… etc…

edit : -

uh , no… that may be a bit too general , eh ?

Please let me know which of these setups you were interested in , and I’ll attempt to report my findings … [bear in mind I’m no fish maestro, though …just a “tinkerer”]

cheers !

ben

With so many combinations I’m surprised you’re not confused…then again… maybe you are!

You have more fins for that board than I’ve ever seen. I can now see why you have so much fun playing with them.

You are a really good example to others who want to learn and explore different setups. The more you try, the more you know for yourself.

I pity you if you travel though Chip, those fins might get confiscated as dangerous wave weapons. Either that or excess baggage, sorry, no pun intened.

Ride what you like and the world will ride with you… well that’s until you ride something the rest of the world wants, then the world will just ride you. Have fun.

I figured if I was lucky / blessed enough to get waves 12 months of the year here , and rode a different fin setup on the “prawn” every month , in about ? years I may have a small idea of what the different fins can do . A small idea.

But , my "prawn’’ by then would be …an empty shell…or , possibly… eaten ?

ben

…so , who wants some fcs fins then , eh ? eh ?

Fintastic man! I am digging this photo. I like the back fin on this one. F’n A!

Hey chip.

How do you like the twinzer setup? (The one with the two little tiny sidebites in the front and the standard-sized fins in the back?)

Any pros or cons in it? Or any significant things that you noticed about that particular setup?

pretty soon chip is gonna have as many fins for this board as he has photos of old surfboards on his hard drive.

seriously!

I’m digging this photo… forget about board quivers; one board for all!

GREAT stuff Chip! Heres one I’d like to try…

Fishy Shape thruster rails etc. with subtle double concaves in the tail. Lots of options…

I have not tried this setup yet … but I can hardly wait to get it in the water !
