My own fish (WIP)

Some time ago, I got lucky enough to get an old Clark foam blank from the 80’s.

I got that really cheap thank’s to Jeffrey Swartwood. It was old, with a big hole on the deck.

He sold that blank if only I was to make myself a Fish in a really special way.

Some time ago, I also found fantastic balsa wood pieces thank’s to McFly, creator and webmaster of www.shaperoom.net the french surf design/shape forum.

I quickly thought about putting the old classic clark together with the balsa wood.

Some time ago, I saw in the Swaylock’s resources a Pavel fish with a huge balsa stringer.

That was it, I was about to do the same.

I wanted to thank those two blokes, Jeffrey and McFly.

I also wanted to thank Balsa (swaylockian frenchy) because he helped me with his machines and skills.

At the very begining was THE Clark:

Then came the psychotic Balsa:

See his happy face after what he did:

Fortunately, he has the right machines to give the wood a nice clean face:

After a few this and that, it’s time for sticking the whole thing:

Now, I just have to wait.

From all that mess will come out a fish, the size depending on the blank’s final dimensions.

Just to let you know, the stringer is something like 7cm large…

Looks like fun, keep us updated!

Pat

that’s great mate !

thanks for posting that .

And my , what a thick stringer you have !

“psychotic balsa” …hahahahhh …I LOVE it , mate ! …so true ! [based on what I have read in his private messages to me … [and , of course , MINE were perfectly NORMAL !]

Even if it does not mean much to anyone, I’m proud to say:

FRONT PAGE: www.surfermag.com (is it kind of a dirty word/link ?)

Great job. I have the same situation. I have an old stringerless second from Clark the blank is perfect and I have no idea why it was a second. I have held it up to my shaping lights and there’s a few pour runs but no major bubbles yet! I have cut the blank and I also have a nice balsa stringer planned and sanded. I have asked many people on this site what’s best to use for the glue up but the reseponse is slim to none. What did you use? Let me know and thanks.

Dude, not to be rude, but what the heck are you talking about?

I have seen that same question asked - and answered - at least a dozen times since Clark shut down.

Clark used laminating resin. Plain and simple.

People also use epoxy successfully. And PU glue. And Elmers. And, well, pretty much anything sticky.

Its nothing to hang up on, for goodness’ sake. And the answer is there, again & again.

Cuttie could not find the answer, shame on him.

I’ve used PU glue.

Hopefully it’s gonna stay in one piece when I take strings off.

Yeah, sorry to detract from your cool thread with a bit of a rant.

Lob, I love your shapes - so clean & clear - I can’t wait to see how this fish turns out

Benny yes you are rude. I have heaps of work to do and I only visit this site every other week. I don’t live on it! Rhetoric can come accross very negative especially on a site like this take notice.

Lob, Thank you. I have heard polester resin is the best but I have also heard there’s an additive also. Thank you.

Sorry. If your time is short, do a search to see if your question has already been answered, instead of asking (again) and waiting to see if someone answers. Why do you assume that your time is more valuable than mine or anyone else’s?

Guilty, probably  But I use the seach function first, when I have a question. Its rude not to.

Benny, Today my search function was not bring up the info. Maybe it’s my computer. I did try it then I saw this post and asked. Now I wished I hadn’t as I got my face ripped off for doing so! I’m 45+ deep on my work and now I know why so many people in our industry have tired of this site. I’m probably now one of them.

Please allow me to come back to the root.

You registered 1 month, 11 days ago. You said you log on every 2 weeks, man. That is like 3 log ons total. Are you really already tired of sways??

Benny is just trying to keep everything running the right way around here. You wouldn’t show up to a localized surf spot and drop in on respected local, right?? Same deal here… You say that people in the industry are tired of this site…maybe they should stop starting arguments on surfermag and letting them spill over to sways. Maybe they should read the archives as Benny suggested, keep their mouths shut, and learn something…

PS-I failed a dynamics exam yesterday…and it is Greg Loehrs fault! hahahahaha. Gas prices are high too…also Greg’s fault…lol

Sorry man, but everyone is on edge lately. Sways is getting alot of negative recognition lately, and the good vibe is fading fast. Go read Benny’s $14 blank thread! That is what sways is suppossed to be about.

Speaking of good threads, this is one! Nice work Lob! That thick stringer is really cool! I hope you are plannning a clear glass job to highlight all of that wood!!! Keep us posted for sure!

Scott

Dude, not to be rude, but what the heck are you talking about?

Ggggzzztttt!!!

I think I’ve stated this before. The “check the archives” rule or suggestion is pure Bull Sheeeet. It’s usually used to give someone a terse, elitist, snub. If your tired of answering the same old questions stop answering them and let someone else do it. Now were drawing “dropping in on locals” analogies? Give me a freekin brake. That’s the spirit of Sways? Not in my book. How about give a simple answer to a simple question AND check the archives for more info and stop “busting peoples balls” for asking a simple question. It discourages new input and old input. Pretty soon we’ll end up with the “same old locals” giving each other a circle jerk. Later. Mike

Good point Mike! The achrives can be a F’ing nightmare!

“Check the F’ing Nightmare!”

Think I’m gonna screen a T-shirt with the slogan…

Thanks for the photos Lob

Please post more photos as you work on this project.

I used Gorilla glue to glue up stringers on some EPS blanks. The product worked well but seems to be a little pourous. I’m not for or against gorilla glue. I have more testing to do on my own. Looks like lam resin is a simple solution.

Have fun…Just go for it !

Ray

I took the strings off and the glue is really strong. I think I can shape quietly.

There is a hole on the deck I’ll fill using foam from the blank, a bit closer to the tail.

I’ll glue it with resin.

It looks like I can easilly find a 5’8" x 21" x 2"1/2 out of the blank.
