Need Center Fin For 7-0 Canyon Surfboard

College student on my street showed up Saturday afternoon with a surfboard he bought on Craig’s list. He needs a “step up” board for this winter. I told him $75 for the repairs but we need a center fin first. The fin box says G & S Star Systems. I can router out the old box and install a FU box but that would cost more and would ruin any tpye of classic resale value. Kid does not care about classic value but I do. CaptianSurf checked E-bay but did not find anything…So off I went to Bird’s Surf Shed. Bird has a fin but does not want to sell it. He says he would loan me the fin to test drive the board but that doesn’t really solve my delima. I’ve been friends with the college kid’s Grandfather for 20 years. This is more like a family deal not a “turn em and Burn em”.

Bird also offered to work out some sort of deal where we trade in the Canyon Board and get college kid on a proper step up board. That might be a win win for everyone…Stingray

If you can get Bird to lend the fin I will duplicate the base and template in a fiberglass fin.

I’ll second what warrior1515 suggests. Nice to see it’s a real Canyon and not one of the Chinese fakes, at least.

Interesting. How much money are we looking at Warrior ?

Well, kinda pulling at my last remaining heart strings with this one. Helping out a starving student, keep something original and community involvement.

Bottle of Irish Whiskey work? Jameson, Tullemore Dew, Bushmill Honey too much? I like the Bushmill Honey.

As long as you aren’t too picky with the color. I have some fiberglass panels of a few different tints that could work.

That looks like a fun board!

Borrowing a fin and then handing it off to a total stranger is a long shot.

Called the college kid. He does not want to trade with Bird. He wants this board. He’s really stoked on this Canyon surfboard. Even if it means paying extra to install a FU Box. So I’m stalling because I don’t want to router out the Star Systems box…and then …

Today I’m restoring a Carl Hayward Rocket Fish. Twin Fin. Slowly hand sanding a bunch of small dings. Thinking about my talk with Bird… Bird says the Canyon is from about 1980…well wait a minute. I have a board up in the rafters that I bought New in 1980…And after rinsing off all the dust I’m the proud owner of a surfboard with a G&S Star Systems Fin!!! I had it all along. Crazy where life can take you…Stingray

Fin base is 1/4 inch thick. Screw plate might be a little tricky. Warrior? Still interested? Chris P ??? Got any G-10

I’m no stranger. I’ve made and given custom fins for Bird that Bill has shaped. He knows who I am.

Happy to help

Reread it Warrior.
Ray did not imply anything about you personally.
Take it easy

There seemed to be an unintended implication that ‘‘Warrior’’ was untrustworthy.      Nothing could be further from the truth.    Warrior is good people, in my book.

Double post.

So you’re going to seperate out your vintage Canyon with fin to let college kid have the fin?

I do not know Warrior. I’m friends with Bill T… If Bill says the guy is good that’s all I need…Warrior, let’s get together next month after the Swaylocks campout.

I’m not very trusting of the internet…did not mean to give off a bad vibe…Here’s the plan right now. Ray and Chris have already been working on some joint projects. Chris is going to have a go at making a fin with G-10…and then I will get with Warrior. I’m stoked people are interested. And not for profit but maybe we can make some "spare’ fins…Stingray

Thanks everyone!

Ray, to pile onto what Bill says.  Warrior has honor and integrity. No worries whatsoever.  Mike

If someone can provide me with detailed measurements of the fin base using some engineering calipers I’ll happily donate my time and make a CAD model and drawing so that the design is available to all who may ever need it.
