Thanks Mr. Tate, that’s fantastic good news - you have really run with this concept, I think we all owe you a huge debt for bringing this to fruition, and helping to keep Swaylocks on a very positive track.
Just a reminder to everyone that the “hot seat” thread has a little stricter protocol than other threads, because some of these shapers wouldn’t want to do it otherwise. The shaper is the guest of honor, so no flaming, and we can all ask questions, but the guy in the hot seat does the answering.
And for the record, I hope you can also get Greg Griffin on that hot seat list too, its been nice having him post up more, lately.
thanks for the reminder - hope everyone is copy/pasting info and pics they want to save. Systems crash or get modified, and stuff disappears. Nothing on the internet is forever, unless its something embarrassing that you don’t want to be there haha ;-D
It would be nice to kick off each hot seat guest with a short bio. I guess I’m getting old, because I only remember bits and pieces of Greg’s past. I consider him the grandfather of modern epoxy and know he started in Florida, then some of it gets fuzzy. sucks getting old
…in my opinion (and seems that belong to a very small % here…) we should invite the pioneers!!! that still remain or really break through “a bit more new” ones (like Aussie´Mc Coy) or guys like Pleskunas (the ideas out of necessity and the industry) or hard workers board builders like J Dunlop (what s real board building is not talking about how many shapes I did but do nothing…or trying to sell a product) both from US or 60s era “different” ones like H Naldinho from Brazil (that had one of the first machines back in the 60s), etc
I mean, reading what was exposed in the +1 thread, talking about the fins for example, I read what normally most of us shapers and designers known as the basic knowledge…but with a technical lingo; reminds me B Barnfield talking a lot about several things and do not synthesize and seems that this work perfectly good to fit the legend status.
Also, except BarrySnyder or BB I do not see any of the professional ones helping here with many questions that the rookies have…
Of course saying this is to put many of you in discrepancy but I think that we do not have any new design and will not have one after we have a new material; that could be the only thing to change the SHAPE of a board or the way we see fins, etc. What s the point to do the same or similar shape but instead of PU/fiberglass, with PS and PVC or whatever?
A new material should be some plastic/synthetic one due to all other materials are from nature but still see the cars with the same (or worst quality) rubber in the wheels (and with wheels at all!) same metals; the houses are all the same; except the breakthrough with the way that XX skyscrapers started, all is the same with couple of more plastic materials.
Take for example the R Burch video posted in the +1 thread, a good wave, difficult one, not so perfect in some conditions; the type of waves that you normally find in those destinations; the board do not perform so incredible in most of the rides (and bear in mind that the clips WAS edited…) but he can control it due to he s a very good surfer and have more waves surfed than you and me so where s the breakthrough? yes, we can chat for hours about the fin here or there etc but it s all the same; put other good shape under his feet and the guy would perform the same or very similar.
So, the bottom line for me, is that I prefer to read what one of the pioneers have to say regarding culture, sport, industry development or the way that the ideas emerged in some minds or real board building than theory galore that do not produce too much except selling.
