looking to go to noosa for some tip time during december.
dont have much money. whats the best way to do it?
im from california, will fly from lax. what airport do i fly into. whats the best way to get to noosa and hang out within reasonable distance from the surf without renting a car or staying in a crazy hotel? i just want to hang out with the noosa shady’s, and experience noosa and the surrounding areas for what they are.
or would i be better off going to byron bay? i dont know. angourie? where is angourie exactly?
any suggestions would be most greatly appreciated.
Fly into Brisbane, Noosa is about a 1.5 hour drive north. Koala’s Backpackers is walking distance (uphill) from the beach and is the place to stay if you want to party. The YHA backpackers is closer to the beach, but farther from the grocery store. Hastings St. runs along the main beach and is the place for very expensive accomodation/shopping.
I doubt the buslines will carry longboards. Best bet is to try and meet a fellow traveller in Brisbane who has a car and is heading north, hitch a ride with them. Yellow Submarine Backpackers is a good place to stay in Brisbane.
If you have limited time....Noosa is magic but maybe a little fickle for waves. You might consider the Gold Coast as I think it might be a bit more consistent and only about 3 1/2 hours south of Noosa. If there is a good swell go north to Noosa...otherwise hang in Coolangata and surf D'bah and what is left of the Superbank.
If you want to relax and not be in the city…stay in Noosa and surf surrounding beach breaks until swell hits. Surfing Tea Tree is a life altering experience. Be prepared!
INVITATION:
Tom Wegener wanted me to invite Swaylockers heading to the Noosa area to contact him to try out his creations. He making some beautiful boards and wants to share the stoke.
Forgot to add....Byron is about an hour south of Coolangatta and the Pass is very special also. Lennox and Broken Head are close to Byron also. All are worth visiting and surfing if you have the time. My planned 2-3 week trip ended up being 6 weeks and I would have stayed at least another month except for other committments.
If you can hold off for a few weeks the surf is better from January on.
The winds tend to go more southerly which is better for the points.
There will be crowds on all the major points, but the waves you do get are usually worth it.
I think you can get close to Noosa (Eumundi) from Brisbane by train. but not sure.worth checking out tho.
There are a few budget places around Rainbow Bay / Coolangatta that are walking distance to snapper/superbank which could be a good option. everything is close if you dont have wheels to.
australia is a big place , you will need wheels. There is an outfit called wiked campers they cater for the backpacker and are quite cheap i think.
Noosa and the area is unreal ,Byron bay is way more party town it rocks 24/7. With a camper you have accomodation and wheels!!!. You could fit in byron, Goldie and noosa. All world class .
Surf wise in Queensland If there is a high in the Great Australian Bight or a low in the coral sea it will crank at that time of the year. Crowds are full on (school holidays).
A simple way around the crowd. Go inbetween the workers and the unemployed, about 8.30 am you’ll get an hour or 2.
Man, you’re going up to Gods country. A fantastic place. Anywhere form Kempsey (look it up) north will yeild some great point breaks (all rights), but you’re going in the wrong season. You should be here now. You can actually follow fantastic southerly swells up the NSW coast to Queensland ( but they usually get smaller the further North you go). Seek and ye shall find, but go off the beaten track and you’ll find some gems. I reccomend that you get a vehicle though.
One other thing, be very careful at Noosa. The last time I was there, my wife and I came back with twins!
all of you, thank you soo soososoosososos much. you have already helped me in more ways then any travel agent or online resource could have ever.
me and my girlfriend just finished devouring the “wiked campers” website and are giddy with the thought of being able to cruise wherever the hell we want at a moments notice, and to be able to enjoy more places and do more things. noosa and byron bay, oh man.
please keep filling me in on anything else that you think may be helpful. were thinking of flying our american asses into brisbane, renting our camper, going to noosa, maybe spending a few nights, hanging out with tommy wegener and trying out his log, then crusing south to byron bay and riding out the vibe for a while. we have roughly two weeks, roughly no money, and roughly lots of courage and energy.
i know we will be going out of our way by going north to noosa then south past our starting point to byron, but it seems like its the only way to do it, ya know?
ppppplease hicksy. if you could find that out for me it would be awesome. wicked campers said they would rent us a camper to sleep in for 13 or 14 days, i was quoted a thousand dollars.
so ANYTHING cheaper would be great, and i mean ANYTHING. its just got to lock, and have wheels.
Noosa is a great place period…but if you want the points to fire in that month of the year, a cyclone will be your best bet.
In saying that, there also many great beachies round. Byron and the Goldy get more swell and only need 2-3+ of any drection swell to usually start breaking on the good waves (i.e superbank, d-bah, wategoes and broekn head) the pass needs 3-4ft+ on the open beachies to start breaking properly.
