So, how do you guys get rid of your excess foam? Recycle? Industrial trash bins? burn it? spread it around all the neighbors cans? What are your trashy tricks?
Most “shapers” don’t have off-cuts.
CNC’s take care off that.
At least here on Sways, people still have them.
I call them bones.
I break them into short pieces and throw away.
Some turn into this.
You can make rail markers and other high tech shaper/laminator tools with them too.
Good question. I have the same problem. A serious answer would be nice.
An EPS shreader that could fill trash bags would make my waste smaller. Does something like that exisit?
Those were serious answers. Would you like a frown with the next one?
I typically keep a few bigger pieces for repair material, but like Barry said, I break the rest up in small pieces then throw them in the trash. That board is amazing as always Barry, and a very creative use of materials!
i had an idea to cut the bones down and repurpose them as packing material. Haven’t got around to doing the r/d work on that front though.
I used to band saw them in to little one inch scraps and gave them to a friend whos sold tools on Feebay. He used them for packing.
What is that black glue that holds them together, is that resin?
I bet it is. Barry, of course, has the final word.
I can remember back in the 60s and 70’s we would have trouble with resin “glueballs” when fine sanding the blank. I haven’t run in to this for years. Anyone know why?
I’ve made a couple of curved sanding blocks out of offcuts. Sanded a nice even curve into a 2’ piece from the rail and glued a strip of 80-grade sand paper onto it, made a nice concave curve that I use for cleaning up domed decks (block is concave, so that it creates a convex curve).
I also have one that I took from a scrap tail piece with the stringer still in, which I use for cleaning up concaves in the bottom. It’s about 12" wide.
The rest, I’m afraid, end up in landfill.
Let’s start a new thread, Barry’s Secret Sauce. I’ll go first…tinted Lam Resin.
That is my first guess too. Next would be white carpenters glue, tinted with carbon black. There was also a time when thick colored paper was used as well.
AH come on Barry!
You guys gotta pay attention.
The answer is here.

Barry, that’s a pretty rad video. Respect.
all of our offcuts just go in the dumpster behind the building.
along with all the dust from the shop vacs and dust collectors.
