Jammed down to TNT first thing this morning to pick up my new toy. Can not believe I still get a “grimmies rush” about a new board for my 6’3", 220lbs, 59 3/4yr old self.
here is my new BIG BOY TOY. 8’ x 23 3/4" w. 3 5/8" thick. 17 1/2" tail. 19 1/2" nose. 2.5lb American blanks eps. pvc stringer, epoxy.
Shoved it in the water as fast as I could install fins and wax it up. Tim said let it “cure” a few days, yeah right.
Only waist high when I finally hit the water. Paddles unreal, nice 70’s style mid face take off turn. Tight snappy corners…Will update as needed. I will be at my “office” by the pier if anyone wants to try it, ACE.
with the wide tail you get the shoreside fins out of the water during turns, reducing drag and turning using the fins that are ‘working’ with what you want to do…
Sure Gillie, I’ll start paddling “manana”. Had a few people try it and once they got over the “numbers”, dimensions and fins, were very surprised at what it can do.
“ACE, your new board looks waaayy fun!!! Please keep us posted on how it works in bigger surf.”
This board is made to be a SMALL wave board. By “small” I mean head high and under. Not sinking in the flat spots and connecting all the dots on smaller weaker days is what this one is all about.
Yeah…looks fun, its good to see Mindy in the water again, 8’ is just the right size, Thats how I got my first twinzer, it was Mindy’s…MAYBE ???,JUST MAYBE IT COULD HAPPEN AGAIN…
"I see a center box coming and a "here’s my lucky 7
You were right about that, Just got an order for one.
Ride update…I am having WAY TOO MUCH FUN on this thing. It is all I have been riding. Does some really nice noserides. Very smooth ride, does not need to be forced to get where you want to go. I have put it under some pretty skeptical people only to have them come paddling back out with big old grins on their faces saying “I like it, let me ride another one”.
Hi Gillie, just got done riding it in some waves that I thought would be pushing its limits, worked good. Felt really solid on the face with LOTS of speed. I was watching “Butter” on it the other day and he looked like he was trying to overpower it. I think bigger back fins might work for him and on bigger days. But today it felt pretty good. I know the wide tail will be a problem in bumpy stuff. I am old and do not bother with the “big bumpy lumpies” anymore.
Homie dont do bumpies either…leave that to the kids…I want it for the reef in Fiji where Im building my house, typical fijian reef break that requires pumping for speed and tucking in high on the face, floats an old man and paddles easy.
Its funny that as we get older we need to make what we ride easier to paddle and still want performance.
After what ? 20 or more years riding ACE’S , your still producing what I like to ride…
Your still a grumpy old fart , very talented, but a “grumpy”…
ACE, how’s the board going??. Im definately keen to make a midlength, but im trying to decide between a standard 7’8 minimal, and a smaller version of your TOY haha. Surfblanks have a 7’2’’ funboard, 3 5’16’’ thick. I want the longboard style wave catching, paddling, and trimming, but in a small car friendly package. Thinking of 17 1/2’’ nose x 22 1/4’’ x 15 1/2’’ x as thick as the blank will allow. I like the idea of a quad and single. So i can have the choice of a quad if its a little hollow,or single in the fat stuff. Rocker is very limited, 4.88 nose and 2.36 tail.
I have ridden NOTHING ELSE since I put it in the water!!! There have been a couple bigger days that tested its limits. I put a little bigger fins in the back. I have tried some different fins some worked good others? Over all for small, couple feet overhead and under, the thing WORKS.
Your idea of thick, flat rocker is a good way to go just have to break the tail with some nice paneled "V " to aide in rail to rail turns. I have some others in the water and some of the feed back makes me think a “rolled up” bottom in the nose might be another way to go. But the flat nose is sure fun to noseride, These things can really get going and cover a lot of wave territory.
Planing a Baja trip in a couple weeks and can not wait to get it in the waves I really made it for.
Ok, im gunna do a search shaping panel V!!. By “rolled up” bottom in the nose, do you mean some kind of rounded bevel to help stop pearling??. I have a 6’10 egg that has something similar, and i can very easily get my front foot to the tip in slower, full waves. I think it helps keep the nose, and the rails near the nose from digging. I will definately do something similar on mine.
THanks for the quick response mate, great to hear the board goes so well. 2’ overhead would be my biggest waves anyway, so im keen for something like this. Got me excited now. Off to search!!
