one-board quiver/all-rounder roundup : post yer personal-OBQ stats here !

time to get real personal & up close with your current OBQ (one-board quiver).

prior one-board quiver / all-around board threads attempted to define the parameters of how the quintessential OBQ should be :

highlights :
The perfect all around board is one that turns as fast as you can think, puts you where you want to be, and gets you to the shoulder when the ride is over.

For me the one board quiver would be a clean rounded pin, 6 inches longer than you are tall, as wide as your arm from wrist to arm pit, a tail 3" wider than your foot, and a nose that cuts through the water without sinking.

Wide point a few inches behind midpoint. Single concave to V out the back.

If you can't catch waves, don't ride a crutch! Get in better shape and paddle stronger.
What I like about your answer is something I find missing in most design discourses-- designing a board to fit the body. I've always felt foot size is a crucial element in sizing a board but almost no one ever considers it Height and weight obviously. Then stance.

What I would change about your description-- straight, flat bottom- fast, predictable. And I put my widepoint at the midpoint for the same reason. And for where I surf, the extra length is not necessary 98% of the time, so I'd go 2-3" taller than self.

Oh, and I'm sold on Griffin's five fin design.
these were in response to the original query :
... just one surfboard to ride in any and all conditions. The versatile board. The magic carpet. The go to. The single board quiver.

what surfboard design would you choose and more importantly, why? give dimensions and post photos to illustrate your choice.
this is good-- but it would be neat to get more thorough stats to complete the picture, say :

a. current age, height, surfing weight (body weight + the weight of whatever you’re wearing that adds poundage, e.g. wetsuit, booties, leash ?)

b. your current OBQ dimensions, rocker profile, planshape template, bottom profile, rail foil profile, nose & tail specs, fin setup & specs, total board weight (if available)

c. close-up board pics, if any (planshape template, rocker profile, bottom profile, rail foil profile, other crucial performance features)

d. the range of surf conditions your current OBQ handles with ease

e. how many guys you know who wish they had your OBQ !

A.) just turned 30. 5'9'' 78kg

B.) 7'10'' x 22 x 3. 15ish nose and tail. Slight single to double

D.) Knee to a bit OH, fat, to hollow, though hollow waves means getting back on the tail real quick to stop pearling. Not that hard.

* Must say, with 2+1, it trims up fornt great, and turns are drawn out. BUT, with a thruster setup, its very "whipable".

nice, beerfan! how about pics?

cheers,

bump

enjoying this thread, and the links

7’2" x 22" x 3" Griffin 5-fin Rocket.

As much as I keep trying to put it away, it keeps coming back out.

It handles 2’ beach scraps to OH screamers…very versatile design…all in a very manageable package that can be easily duck dived.

I'll try to get a rocker pic today.

One board quiver would have to be a modern longboard, probably a high performance 2 + 1 shape to handle overhead+ waves and at least 9 feet long for small days. Just change the fins to match the wave size/power. Maybe have  2 or 3 carbon fiber stringers to keep it from snapping.

heya afoaf, how about A & C? pics?

cheers,

ahoy sharkC, how about A & C? keeping it (your OBQ) personal hehe

cheers,

This 9'2" X 23" worked pretty good for me from knee high to somewhere overhead.  It had a reverse vee forward and mostly flat in the back 2/3 with a bit of boosted tail rocker.  The 2+1 fin system was key to fine tuning for various wave conditions and for travel.

I've always liked a center box for fin interchangeability and positioning adjustments.  I think the side fins pictured are Al Merrick FCS with an old 4 3/4" fiberglass center fin.  That particular setup worked good up to about head high+.

This is still my OBQ, though i have a few other good boards. I surfed this today in chest to head high fat beachbreaks. Tide was dropping but still fat waves. Been riding it as a single fin, which is super fun, but have gone back to a thruster setup to do some faster turns. Worked well today and i got a little  OH set wedge up in front of me, backhand and all it went sweet, dropped in beautifully, cutback fast too. I will miss this when it goes, but its got a lot of life in it yet.

Dan, i like that blue one.

beerfan,

thanx...it's modeled loosely of wayne lynch's sea of joy board...

the fin(TA greeno stage 6 ...8") really makes it lively

7’1 Banana Hull! Trims like nobodies business in waves from 1-4 foot, turns on a dime, plenty of volume offset by nice knifey rails. Doesn’t matter how many boards I have in the car, I end up pullin this baby out, 9 out of 10 days!

dang..now that's a sweet board!

here's my 7.6 x 23 x 3 1/16..(Pearson Arrow-Dane Perlee)

good as a psuedo widow maker ..3.75" side and a TA wayne rich 7.5"

or single..with a TA velzy fin 8.5"

Dick Van Straalen all rounder.

Definitely prefer it on the points for all the size we have on the Sunshine coast but also good on sub  4’ beachbreaks when not a lot of duckdiving is required as the width and thickness of the board with its bouyancy make for a beating or two when tired.

I’m almost 48 yrs, 6’1" and 90 kgs. Mostly wear boardshorts here and a long sleeved 2mm spring suit in winter. Board is 8’ carbon fibre over eps with concave deck and 2+1 fin set up. Paddles every bit as well as a 9’er. Not particularly loose but has brilliant glide and speed.

Never measured the width (guessing almost 23") and thickness is 3" (or so) as Dick doesn’t put dims on his boards except length. Bottom has concave in nose going into a double out through to v in tail.

Chine rails.

Could easily use a 7’ all rounder as my only board too but not sure I could sell this one off to fund another one.

It still looks as good as the day I picked it up and will be 3 in April.

I’m 29, 6’0’’ and 75kgs, I like these sorts of boards, go good in everything, really good in barreling waves.

5’10’’ x 12 7/8’’ x 19’’ x 14 3/8’’ x 2 5/16’‘.  I’ve riden them as (mckee) Quads but seem to like the pivot of 3 fins better, maybe I haven’t figured the quads out yet, super fast but I’ve had problems sliding down the face of steep waves/drifting ect…I feel 3 fins go virticle better…  I do the fin positioning the same as my personal 6’2’'s, I want a drivey little board for getting barreled on.

yeah..it's a pretty rad board...really bladed out in the rails and tail...

slight concave in the nose...really needs a wave with push though...

today..however, the 8.6..was did it's job....i hid in the fog in front of sawgrass...

tide coming in..no real wind...1-3'...

then sun came out..and people started showing up..

i was  able to wear my 2mm spring suit with rashie..and my surf booties

it was that warm...yeah..winter's over!
