Yeah Bill; I seem to remember from another thread that you had metioned working at the G&S factory during that time frame. I read an interveiw once in which Larry stated that when Hynson went over to Hobie they did everything they could do to get him back and finally did. Shaping wise that was probably his most productive period. After the Endless Summer and before going over the "deep end". I was living in PB during 69-70 and used to see him side-slipping his way thru barrel after barrel at Blacks. Sad day for me a few years back when I sold a 10'6 Phil with a rising sun D fin and a Hynson Red Fin(in as good of condition as the one in your picture) in one day. D-I-V-O-R-C-E lawyers, guns and money. Lowel
''If you don’t sell that fishin’boat I’m gonna divorce you."
lunchmeat’s dad told the story about
when his wife gave him the ultimatum.
then he said…
'So I sold my boat. Then she divorced me."
…ambrose…
"The judge said son
you better keep her
I think It’s cheaper’’
I came across a rare Phil Edwards board and will post some pictures and dimenions. Would love any imput as to when shaped and soforth. Its dark purple has his name but no other numbers. Diamond tail long dagger red fin ,very narrow in the tail, V bottom in the nose, and tail. 8'10'' - tail is 10 1/2'---nose is 12''

Curious about your board, Ssentron From the pictures your nose and tail dimensions seem off unless the board is very narrow 19" or so at wide point. Just my visual observation, because I am revisiting some of the vee bottom transition era concepts. That’s an interesting board.
Ace it is a very narrow board! i will take a mesure at widest point and post back . Those deminissions were 12" from nose and tail, i will stand it up and take another pic too. The one i posted the tail looks wider than if you look at it straight on. By the way i found it in a friends back yard! He did’nt want it!!! let me clear this up ,this board is 7’10" long
One man’s trash…
It just looks a lot fuller than what you stated but if it is narrower that will make a difference. It looks “stubbier” than it is. The fuller outline boards from that era have some really nice functional curves, to me.
Colors always throw em off too.
A picture of the fin would be nice also.
Cool board hang on to it.
Ace i took that mesurment and my PE is 19 1/2" wide. Heres a look at the fin
We just auctioned off a 9’6" Hobie Phil Edwards circa 1978-1980 for our South Texas Surfrider Chapter. The board was bought from a local surf shop in that time frame. Appears to be “Color Flo” cloth and with no signature on the stringer. Has the foil logo with the serial number stamped. The buyer was stoked to get it.
SHF recently acquired a nice donation of 38 classic boards and among them was this 9 stringer Hobie PE.
Circa 1999
Length: 9.75 ft
Thickness: 3 in
Nose: 16.25 in
Tail: 13.5 in
Weight: 28 lb
It wasn’t that common to see signatures in those days.
That is definitely not ColorFlo cloth. Just a green tint job with cutlaps. ColorFlo was long gone by the late 70s.
Hey Saltmasters, do i know you,or u know me ? cause i know where thoes pic were taken at, I managed ,work at the pantry grillroom for years. In that very same shopping center. I am mark nortness AKA SSENTRON
Just picked this one up 8ft 6 needs some tlc but nice. Does anyone know what fin would have come with this?
Just came upon Phil Modl in Jax. Fl. – exact logo design gold with red writing - board is signed with no data beside job # 216
would seem Japan wasnt only place they went as back and forth seems unlikely - clean board yet some sun exposure is evident
is this a known problem on this board - only blem on whole board - clear white foam then 2 spots with no evident water entry spots ??
The dark area looks suspiciously like water intrusion from a fiberglass bruise but could also be from a leak at the drilled leash attachment and/or a finbox leak. It might be from uneven sun exposure if it was stacked under another board with it's tail sticking out? There are faint signs of snackles (fiberglass bruising) around the leash attachment... sometimes a leash knot or rail saver attachment can create a snackle that slowly leaks.
As far as I know, it's not a known problem to that specific model. Any board can have leaks and the leaking area is sometimes difficult to pinpoint. Leaving it out in the sun to dry out will often leave tell tale salt crusts where the water evaporates through the leak.
At that point in time (maybe still?), that San Clemente factory (Surfglas) was cranking out boards under a couple of different brands... Stewart, Hobie, Herbie Fletcher, Mickey Munoz, etc.
Wow. Nice find bside.
My boards (see page 2 of this topic string) came with a 9" FibreGlas fin. I keep it set in the box so the back of the fin is 9.75" from the edge of the tail and like it that way. Nice and loose. Some guys like it way back. Each to their respective own.
I also have used a Fins Unlimited 9" Dale Dobson fin in the 9’6" pointed one and like that as well.
Yours was probably made in the 90s like mine.
Have fun with that puppy. RIDE it.

I am with John on this. None of mine have that type of discoloration. Only in spots where there has been a crack, ding. Those stains just make it more loved . . .
ST
There is a pic of the fibre glas fin in my 9’8".

Same here. That kind of yellowing is the result of a leak. Is there a soft spot in the tail? I’d suspect early stages of delam with that much discoloration.
I have tried to Edit this post of my Phill gun but can’t It is 7’10"
