Planer Porn

Today the Skil 100 got a little brother.  Sad thing is I payed more than double for the used Hitachi than the pristine 100.  Now I just have to modify the Hitachi.  If I like the Hitachi the Skil will wind up on Ebay.

I found a skil 100 for $30 in Canada, but once I uttered the words “shipping” and “California” he must have shuddered. After that he absolutely refused to send the skil to California because of his dislike for the state. But hey!!! - it was his tool man, may he do with it as he pleases. Then I found anotherskil 100 in Canada for $150, not bad right? I squared everything away with the seller’s daughter because the seller spoke french and broken english. It was looking like $200 (shipping included) for a running/good condition skil 100. Sounding pretty good!  Anyways, I was about to pull the trigger on sending him the money, but then he said, “you pay $150 more for plane.”  $%#@ that. I won’t be taken for a fool. After that my search for aSkil 100 plane seemed pretty grim. After some more poking around I found local carpenter was retiring and selling off his tools. Sure enough he had a skil 100.  Typical, right? I offered $400 for his planer because I was getting pretty tired of this bloody search. He was pleased with my offer and I was going to drive over on a Sunday morning and pick it up. It was Wednesday. Well guess who calls be back Thursday night… “I can’t sell the planer for $400, I went on ‘the ebay’ and people are selling their skils for $700-800. I will sell you my planer for $600, no lower.” Trying to run me around the block. $%#@ that… So again, I am planerless. So I get a phone call from this guy selling his 1962 Skill 100 that’s never been used he claims. Flawless blades, runs smoothly, comes with everything it was sold with in 1962.  He’s over in Chicago, seems like a nice guy. He wants $800. I just tell him, "hey I’ve got $500, call me in the future if you want to sell for $500. I get a call a month later, totally forgot about it and I have a friend in Chicago pick it up for me. My Skil now lives in Malibu, CA. I didn’t get a rad $50 goodwill steal, but it’s flawless and I can’t complain in the slightest. I’m very happy to own this tool.

I don’t think it was ever used, but now it’ll get the time it deserves! Here are some photos:

WTF where is that cheap skill in Canada some of us live there and need one  ARRRGGGHGHHHH!

Girvin, I’ve lost the $30 contact. I have the $150 contact still. You can call me anytime 310 383 6469 and I’ll give you his phone number. My dealing with him was about a month ago, he probably still has it. I’ll check my emails for the $30 skil, but I may get a carrier.

Howzit pipdaddy, Too bad you and girvin didn't get to gether sooner and buy the $30 and the $150 and girvin could have had them both shipped to him and they would have cost you each $90 before shipping. But if you got a brand new never been used with those manuals included I think you did good and don't lose the manuals, they may be worth almost as much as the planer. Aloha,Kokua

Hey just pm me the # or email me through my blog. Thanks I hope he still has it!

On the morning of our wedding day this past Saturday my wife-to-be surprised me with an Accurate Planer, #5/100.  She had called up tjrm63 and asked him what she should get me as a wedding present, so I also have him to thank for my shiney new toy.  Can’t wait to mow some foam and try it out.

Having seen the “beast” myself (I was lucky enough to visit the Accurate factory during my trip to California), I must say that it looks and feels even better than the Skil. The motor-housing is solid aluminum, directly ground from an aluminum billet. GREAT tool. Matt Harper at Accurate promised me they would think about a “european” version in 220 V. I’ll purchase the very first one…

Rick… does your new wife have a sister…   awsome gift!

Hi Guilhem. It was a pleasure meeting you and your daughter the other day. Let me know next time your back in Cali and we’ll see if you can stop by for a proper tour when you have more time.

Regards,

Matt Harper

Accurate Planers

The Accurate Planer looks a lot like the Makita 1100b. Much longer bed than the newer planers from Makita, Hitachi, Bosch. The handle is behind the motor and cutter barrel. It does have straight blades however. I am wondering if I can use this planer for shaping short boards. I have three of them and make my living with them hanging doors. Any opinions would be appreciated.

Huesos, the new Accurate planer comes in two versions: one with a long bed (JN1) and one with a short bed (JN2). The first is good for longboards or SUPs and the shorter one is more fitted to shortboards curves.

Hi guy's

After doing a couple of boards by hand I thought it was time to buy a planner. Looking here it seemed like a good thing to buy a skil 100. So here it is, 5 minutes from my house. My new planer, euro model 100H 220v 4.7 amp's 940 watt. It still runs sweet directly from the first owner. Now lets get some foam....[img_assist|nid=1055127|title=skil 100H|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=0|height=0][img_assist|nid=1055128|title=vintage skil planer|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=0|height=0]

I also am wondering about a Wen planer. Mako224 did you end up picking up this planer? And if so, how did it work out?

Liink to the page: http://www2.swaylocks.com/forums/planer-porn?page=3

I can pick one up for $25 and the guy is willing to ship it flat rate to me. Same state as me about 200 miles away. He is not sure on the model as he was not at his shop when I called him back, but says it has about a 2" cutting blade, I’m thinking it’s probably the 2 1/8" as my searches have shown most older Wens have a 2 1/8" blade. So a little slimmer than the standard 3 1/4". From the description it sounds alot like the one that Mako224 posted above.

So if anyone has any experience using a skinny Wen I’d appreciate any feedback you can post.

Thanks

The Wen’s pretty useless for shaping, I donated mine to Balsa for his collection.

Just scored this though.  It runs great.  Came in the case with an extra unused set of blades and the operating instructions dated 1/51

Well Today is my lucky day. I also just scored a very nice Planer. A skil 100 5.5 in good used consition blades are sharp motor sounds great and just some surface rust as to be expcted here in Florida.

I had some items to drop off at our local AMvet thrift shop. Colleen saw they were haveing a 1/2 off clothingf sale so she wanted to shop. While she shoped i went back to were they have a few tools and odds and ends. There sitting on a lower shelf was the Skil with the asking price of $29.95! Needs some cleaning and some paint on the dust hood.  Might just have to buy a lottery ticket.

Wow, congrats on that, what are the chances?  Did you ask for half off?

I'm vet so I can get a 20% discount if I show my VA card. Now I am not a greedy man and I do believe the gods of surfing and shaping take things into account. Besides Am Vet helps homeless Vets and those suffering with PTSD. In other words I did not ask for a discount and thanked the gods for my good fortune.

Well they were smiling on you that day.  Great find!

I’ve got a five Amp over on Ebay that can be bought for $500. All reworked by Petec a few years back and has seen little use since.  Newer Trigger, bearings, brushes,  20’ cord and HSS German/Swiss blades that are nice and sharp.  Bobbed at the handle and depth adjustment altered via Ghettorat method.  Lowel
