Planer Porn

This one is first generation Skip, Model SPN.  Then around 1950 (I think) they came out with Model 3P and that’s the one Remington put their tag on in 1956. Ebay $50, nobody else bid on it.

Cool find Gene.

Does the wing nut adjust the depth?

Rear exhaust. That’s cool for 50’s tech.

29 lbs.

That’s a workout.

Who needs the gym.

Love your porn Gene.

Both the girl, and the planer!

Radd a jet powered planer.

Not to ‘brow beat’ anyone, but do the math! A Hitachi surfboard planer w mods = roughly $400.00, a used skill 100 $350.00- $700 …isn’t it WISER to take a used skil100 if it’s only $100.00 more? I thought about it, bypassed the hitachi, went to Ebay and bargained with a old Texan and got $100.00 off the top as I made offer of $400.00- he was asking $600.00, but counter offered $500.00. I accepted and got a VERY low miles Type 4 Skil100 7.5 amps! I don’t feel bad as I only paid roughly $100.00 over a plastic, but otherwise good planer. But I’ve ALWAYS DREAMED of owning a skil100 since I was 16! I finally realized my dream. If you don’t have one, but want one. Work your tail off and go and get yourself one you can swing… trust me, I would have taken a cheaper more used, but servicable -skil 100 if I had the dough when I saw one for $350.00, but I was zapped on funds…then I got paid! I ended up paying $527.00 otd, but got a nice low miles unit - that’s stock out of the box. So far I did my otf mods is all, swappin to new blades next! Then off to get my grubbies on it to plane out a few boards!!! Stokin…get a - skil and keep it!-Jim

I found this makita 1100 planer in my dad’s shed, didnt even know he had one. Is this aready good for shaping or do you need a special blade or anything? This one is adjustable in depth

Hi JH-

This thread seems to be more about new marvels and impressive antiquities than answering specific planer questions. If the planer is running OK (motor, bearings) and the blades are sharp it will plane foam. Best thing to do would be to try it on some scraps and see what you think. Then you can tell us. There are things to do to make stock wood planers more foam-friendly, read up on the Newleaf mods for an overview. -J

I live in New Zealand so i can’t buy this… but i saw this awesome looking relic on Ebay and thought one of you guys might snap it up…

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Extra-Heavy-Duty-Electric-Planer-230-240v/171496701710?_trksid=p2045573.c100033.m2042&_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D25410%26meid%3D46ced7f046a347fab6f1daa33a2b2651%26pid%3D100033%26prg%3D10672%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D4%26sd%3D171496701710

p.s. the reason i found this forum is because my Hitachi F30 (one of the old metal frame ones) got knocked on to a concrete floor today and the chassis broke. It’s the chassis around the motor that cracked. Which means that the motor is no longer alligned properly with the wheels. Which means that it no longer works. Any of you guys think it’d be possible to fix it. I loved that bloody planer. its got GRUNT.

**On Ebay now. Someone here should get this. I can't afford to do any spending at the moment. Auction ends tomorrow 10-18-14 12:42PM**

These are mid 1950’s and have motors that will outlive all of us.  The 676 and 100’s that have no type number on label were the very first of the series and in my opinion the best.  Copper alloy in the motor windings was really pure, dies used for casting were new and the aluminum alloys were also much purer.  Blades made in Germany, everything else in Chicago.  Somebody needs to grab this one, if less than $500 you stole it.

I’ve had hi bid on that one for days, don’t encourage people to outbid me!!!

A few months ago, Greek called me to tell that he could secure this one for me. You bet I did agree… Now I need to have it shipped without paying as much (or more) than what I paid for it. Lol.

For me that same dream began at age seventeen.     The first time I saw a Skil 100 in action, was in the hands of Wayne Land, shaping a balsa board.      I asked ‘‘What do they cost?’’      his rep[y, ‘’ $125 dollars.‘’     When I fulfilled my dream, at age 23, the cost had jumped to $150 dollars!       I still have and use that planer, to this day, some fifty years later.      Over the years, and thousands of boards, only cords, brushes, triggers, and blade sharpening, were required to keep me shaping.      By the way, Jim, that is one fine looking planer!   Good for you.

nice story - Bill! I’m happy YOU Sir kept your SKIL100 to! I look forward to seeing you build that f’ing sweet board you have planned! Btw -my planer only has a little corrosion on the belt cover! I probably will have
It touched up. Sadly I can’t do anything for a mos as I’m signing up for a career. I aced four 0fficial practice tests! So I’m extremely busy studying. Pay is about 4 k per mos! Not to brag, but I got tired of my bros buddy bragging he bought his second home…actually, I should thank him. If he didn’t boast I wouldn’t have got the idea!!! now it’s my turn! Lol. Best regards. Good luck on that beautiful surfboard design you got planned! I bet it will be fun -busting out that good ole FOAM BUSTER!

Bill - if I could rewind back to the day I saw that planer on 41st ave in Santa Cruz, well, I think I would have asked Dad if
I could borrow the $…for some reason I didn’t have the nerve to? Maybe I felt I should wait? But I finally did it! It’s a great feeling to fulfill a dream of securing this tool. I believe anyone can - as long as they earn it. save up!Jim

Do you remember a few years ago Home Depot discontinued and put these on sale for $100? With lifetime battery guarantee?

Cordless 18v with dual spiral blades.

I just shaped this beast for my wife outside by the garage. As opposed to my wife in the house? Ha. No seriously, this little planer put up a blizzard of foam dust and worked great.

All the best boys

Yesterday, in my little town, walking in center, I saw an ancient hardware shop where my grandfather gone a lot

of years ago for tractor spare parts; a sick idea turned on in my mind… I entered in and I requested: " there is

some old  power planer  that remained here from many years?" this is the result: a new planer, never used, of 50

years ago, 50 years in warehouse!!! I bought it immediately.

Strange machine: not good for shaping but charming.

what do you think about?

Very nice!!!

Thanks for the picture Why_Not.

I really like the detachable extension on the back of the planer. I wish old Skils came so equipped.

I’d worry about the blades on the ‘open’ side of the planer, it seems like it should have a guard.

Love the paddle board!!!

This night I found it on sale in a local web site.
I do not know what think about!
Primitive!!!

75 €, about 80 $…
I almost buy it…
