Poorman...Compsand...Delam...Make a Plan...Wham Bam!!!

MarkSSD called me. He has this great idea. He wants to use Balsa wood to fix delams on old longboards. Sounds good to me... So he shows up at my place with an old surfboard and a whole bunch of balsa wood....He went crazy with the el cheapo trim router...stripped off the deck glass and glued in balsa wood on the deck.......Ok....I can do this...I have an old board and some balsa............I need a plan....I need to resize some photos........

So I pull the Bear down from the rafters...I love this board....too bad it's totally thrashed and delamed...to bad that guy ran me over way back in 01....Time to breathe new life into my old friend......Purist beware.....

I've got a plan.....more photos soon...

Stingray,

Keep 'em coming I am in the process of revitalizing my #001. I could use the inspiration.

Thanks

I replaced a delammed deck on an old Wave Graffiti board. The deck was about 50% delammed but the rails and bottom were ok. I cut the deck off took the rotten foam down, then bought it back to level with balsa.

The balsa came out nice, I hide the join with a pinline. Sorry no pics of it finnished. The deck is now very solid and for less weight than filler would of added.

I look forward to seeing your repair.

                                                 Cheers.

This is not a repair...Ha Ha!!!!  It's a poorman compsand......

So I cut out all the bad foam and went crazy with the trim router.

Nice board Apprentice...let's see more photos!

...

After replacing all the bad foam and sanding down the deck I started fitting in my balsa strips...

The glue up was pure Swaylock's maddness. Next time I'll find someone with a planer to make all the boards the same thickness...

Ray…I will say a prayer for you tonight…you’re going to need it!!!

KEEP THE BALSA BURNING

"Next time I'll find someone with a planer to make all the boards the same thickness..."

Yeah Ray.  I have a thickness planer.  It would be so easy and cheap for you to mail me the balsa and I'd be happy to do it.  I won't even steal any.

PS - A vacuum bag might be nice.  I KNOW Tim has one of those.

On the other hand the garage is looking nice and tidy.

"Next time I'll find someone with a planer to make all the boards the same thickness..."

What Ray is doing is crazy enough that I actually thought he was thinking about putting his quiver through the thicknesser!
Keep the photos coming.

Hi Ray -

In all seriousness that's a bitchen project.  It looks like a very functional vintage shape.  The new balsa decking will surely breathe new lift in to it.  As mentioned, it looks pretty cool as well.  Sort of like Nocean's balsa skin deck he posted.

Generous of you to offer to help me out on a project.

Hey John - what Ray didn't mention is that he was just down at my house last weekend with a bunch of redwood and basswood running it though my thickness planer.... we even ran a stick of balsa through the planer first just to get the setting right.

this isn't crazy by the way - we've partially and totally re-decked a fair number of boards this way, and although they gain some weigh they are pretty much bullet-proof afterwards.  From total delam to recycled board, plus it looks nice.

Thanks Keith....

I heard a rumor the other day....oh...something about balsa in San Diego....I told the guy to walk away....

I have some friends.....I'm out of Balsa today...we'll see....I'm good...John M you know where to find me.......If you want to do a balsa project send me a pm because the well is running dry.......
