nicosb: do you put the resin bead on the tail of all yr boards?
do you put the resin bead on the tail of all yr boards?
I haven’t. Maybe roughly half of the boards have the bead on the tail. It’s one of those things I’d like to get around to doing someday, but it’s not a high priority. The boards all seem to work well and ride fine as it is, bead or no bead.
Plus I’m no pro when it comes to ding repair, etc. I’d rather just surf 'em.
Nick,
Sorry if I already asked you this. I don’t remember. Is your Klaus Jones really flat behind the fin? Or does the hull continue all the way through the tail? I ask this because another guy I know just got a KJ and he says there is hull (convex) all the way to the end of the tail. I thought it should get totally flat in the tail behind the fin box.
Jim
Hey Jim,
Just remembered that I never responded to your question. The Klaus is totally flat behind the tail. No hull back there whatsoever.
Hello Jim,
Thank you for the information.
I’ll move my fin a bit forward and try to feel “1/4inch movement” like Greg says…
Also, I’ve already started to thinking about my next hull, it’s probably a 7’4" P.B. !
more straight outline and pinched rails, sounds insane and great.
I’m so exciting to ride my hull. It’s a totally different world from I used to be…
Mike
Maybe try starting at 12.5" then start moving up .25" at a time from there.
Jim
Nick,
Thanks for the reply. How is the depth of the hull in front of the fin on the KJ compared to the Liddles? I saw one today that seemed like it has some soft “V” in front of the fin when you run your hand across the stringer.
Rode Malibu this morning with the bladed 7’6" Liddle and it didn’t like the bump on the water from the wind. It needs glassy conditions.

“Anyways, it goes well off the bottom, alot of projection when you get the rail burried…the biggest result (what I was looking for) is the ability to pivot off the lip…”
I ditto this surferguy80…
My set-up with futures vectors up front and a cut down Rusty flexfin in the middle is posted on page 27 of this thread. It’s super easy to cut back on, and can pivot on the lip pretty good (when I don’t fall LOL)
Having said that, My question would be what do think would be goo characteristics for a hull that was multi finned - length, width, etc…?
your board looked pretty tricked out as a twin - I wanna try!
well, if it’s a south wind forget about it…spring winds can be ok. hulls do like some wind texture to get up and rollin’ sometimes glass can be too sticky. for severe wind days-especially spring, pg and i developed a hull with heaps of v in front of fin-the thing just eats up the chop, yet still feels smooth…a board that greenough was totally stoked on. said it was really fast and smooth in some big chop we were surfing(he was on his mat of course.)
B.Miller just finished my new board; it is a more refined version of the 7’0" he made me last year.
6’11" 18.5 x 22.5 x 16.5 x 3, wide point @5" ahead of center, rocker: 3.25 nose x 1.25 tail
We glassed it on the heavy side 8+6 top and 8 bottom with a hair of V.
i liked watching the board move through the water yesterday. like a hot knife through butter! if those are the heal dents you put in the board in one surf i better get my liddle back pronto
no surf for me today- enjoy it without me.
that would be a treat for me – to surf with another, experienced hull rider. to be able to see the board move through the water and draw lines. i get a kick out of hearing about you guys seeing eachother in the lineup.
i have been surfing with Motif since he was an 8 year old. there are four or five regular hull riders on the westside of santa cruz. really fun and inspirational to watch others flex their fins.
Alright, so I am still trying to figure out exactly what you guys mean by a ‘hull’. From what I can understand, it is a board with a convex hull, rather than one that is flat or concave. What benefit does this shape have over concave or flat? Also, why does the fin placement seem so far forward? I read at one point the back of the box was 9" up. Can someone please clarify. Other than that, all these boards are figgin’ amazing. I am definetly inspired to go out and shape a similar board. Thanks for the great info and pics.
Anthony
Hey Anthony,
If you haven’t already, take a lood at some of the first pages in this thread. Lee V and Matt give some of the best explanations of what we mean by hull, where the design comes from, etc. That should set you down the right path.
Hey Motif,
Nice photos. What’s the secret to being able to post such nice big, clear photos. The best I can do is post small, somewhat grainy (low quality/low resolution) photos given the image size restrictions.
Actually, right now, the tools to browse for and post photos have disappeared from my editor/post reply screen entirely. Have we reached the maximum capacity of this thread? Anyone else having this problem?
Sorry for the brief off-topic tangent here but I’ve got lots more hull photos ready to post!
Try uploading to photobucket.com then copy the img code of the image and post it in your posts here at Sways, that’s what has worked for me.
Nico,
MC BU’ has stated it correctly. I go to photobucket.com and upload my photos. Then when you view your album, there are a bunch of codes on the right hand side. Clicking on the code: copy, then paste in sways. Seems to work preety good for me…
Lets see some more of your beautiful quiver!

i meant to say…some eastsiders too…steiny…
and i think i’m the one pushing it…
especially quiverwise
6.8 point concept
6.10 spence
7.2 fineline
7.6 liddle
8.0 bojo
yikes…greg was right it is addicting…
oh well…might as well enjoy the ride

I say if youre going multi-finned, go shorter…hulls lack when they get to short, more fins help that, so you may as well make the board shorter if you are going to use the fins anyways.
I like mine at 6’5, im making a stringerless one a little bit more drawn in for better waves, w/a round tail (twin and single setup)…so numbers-wise Id say anywhere between mid 5’s and high 6’s…its personal preference though; i wouldnt care so much about pivot in a longer hull since they are meant more for straight line speed…if you wanted to ease cutbacks on a longer version Id just got the 2+1 route like liddle has been doing for a while.
