post Hull pics

So, with even the most curious boardphiles completely alienated, where does the added cash flow come in?

publish a book…

The Hull Truth…and nothing but

BD

If you like it, do it

If you don’t, then don’t

Hulls are hot

Hulls are hot s**t right now

Pezman said surfing was like the hulla hoop that never went away

Surfing is not going away

KP just said who cares

Why do you care

I love my hull

I love my hull because I go faster than any other board I have ever ridden

Everyday someone ask’s about the board

Everyday I am just having plain fun

And that is it

I had one of the best sessions of my life today on my Liddle hull.I wait for ages for it all to come together to take

it out in the water but worth every second.Words defy me.Hulls will never be the board for the masses.

so fun, so fun.

I could care less if its trendy or not, i just had two of the most fun sessions all year on my keeled-hull…the thing gets better every time I ride it.

anyways though…its all good fun, if the style of the board matches the style of your ride and your pref. in waves, then its the right thing for you.

anyone who doesnt like the feeling of a hull wont be riding one after a couple of sessions

Sways is the best resource for Hull culture, and especially this thread. I have been riding hulls in Cornwall for the last couple of years. The learning curve is slow as good waves are rare but I am having so much fun… 7’2 Andreini vaquero & 6’10 swallow tail stub, looking forward to an 8’ chambered balsa vaquero and one of Dale’s mats. Thanks to all for your valuable input!

Trendy, HA! It’s 1984, just out of High School my father says “how about a new board for graduation?” Sure. We’re vacationing in Laguna so we go to the Hobie shop and I pick out this sick 5’8" trifin so I can be just like my friends… on the way home from vacation I says to pops “there’s a shop I wanna find”…

At that shop I find this great used 5’10", “dad (I whine) I really want this board” (I still have it, got rid of the trifin):

BTW, the third fin is a copy that I had GL make me.

never rode one… but i suppose those mccoy nuggs and zaps, with those up-rails and hulled bottoms + those flexy-looking fins … must give you somewhat of a slingshot feel, uh? i know there’s stuff about them in other threads, but i’d like to get impressions from a hull pilot. ( eh, you me mus’ be the same age … i gd’d in 84 too … kinda the height of the horan/zap buzz… and then came curren)

Spence,

How can I get a board like that?

I see what you’re getting at Spence, but please know that I wasn’t seriously suggesting that I hope all new orders for hulls disappear once Mr. Kopps succeeds in delivering his long-awaited dose of the weird. Lord knows mine will keep coming. But who’s to say we can’t revel in the spoils too? Since when is it a crime to amass second-hand boards?

In a perfect world, I’d like to think that the recent spike in board orders has provided these shapers some means to invest in things that will keep that oh-so-precious cash flow going regardless of the latest board trend (or production schedule). Maybe then guys like Greg would pay somebody else to glass all those boards so he could get some rest! I know that this unique microcosm of surfdom was never motivated by wealth or fame so I suspect that these men will continue to break their backs in the name of craftsmanship, art, and love.

hey jdo2

saw your pics of the 7’2 vaquero last year on this thread - good to see another huller here in the UK - they’re not easy to get hold of although there are some vaqueros coming over to Adam at Trim in a couple of weeks - i’ve got a 7’10 coming in that shipment, is that where your 8’ balsa is coming from? from what i’ve heard his balsa boards are amazing! There is also going to be the chance to get genuine original (US) template hulls from a top shaper in the UK very soon which is very exciting for us UK surfers - as soon as the deal’s official i’m sure said shaper will let everyone know! (if not i will!)

At the moment i surf a 7’6 Liddle inbetweener which i love - goes in east coast beach break a treat connecting sections i’ve never got close to in the past - never seen another hull here or down in the SW although i believe there are a couple about! I’m sure people are put off by the fact that they were originally designed for points and there aren’t many points in England - i’ve not found beach breaks any problem (as long as it’s reasonably clean) and i find the forward position very natural - i love the feel, working on getting deeper more powerful turns and of course as much speed as possible. It was actually Gene Cooper who on another forum posted up a couple of clips of Chris Vail on his 6’8 pointbreaker surfing fairly average beachbreak that convinced me to buy my first hull - i’m so glad i did! Gene was saying what fun he had on a variety of hulls in the mid 70s surfing mostly beach breaks with the likes of brian caulkins, mike hughes, rick pharoah, and mark bruschwiler - figured i could do with some of that fun - my longtime surfing buddy is now desperate to find his own hull - he keeps trying to get his hands on mine - they are undoubtedly addictive!

I’ve always loved the look of the shorter hulls like the siglo and having seen Dale Solomonsons pics on pg23 of this thread i’ve been really keen to get one - when KP put up those two 6’3 yellow Liddles (pg37) it was destiny - a quick chat with Greg Liddle (via email) to check they’d work well in beach break (no problems there!) and I’ve got one of them on its way from mollusk nyc as we speak - very exciting!

How do you find your 6’10 - any pictures at all? I was also interested that you went for epoxy in both boards - any particular reason - I’ve never really liked the feel of them but i guess it’s a personal thing? does Andreini still glass them quite heavy?

be good to hear from you and hook up for a surf sometime - to everyone else i would second jdo2 in thanking you for all the great resources and inspiration this particular thread has provided - long may it continue!

Hi mrkmrk2842,

Yes, it is coming in Adam’s next shipment. It is Marc’s old board, he says it was his favorite for 6 years and he usually changes his quiver every year, I am anticipating a lot of joy…Where are you based? I am mostly at Gwenver and Gwithian or in-between…

I chose epoxy to try something new and I loved the lightness, the ease of handling in the water, they need clean waves but then they fly, they are very lively and strong…My 6’10, 23’ wide, and my son’s 6’6 are based on a KP Bojo pescado, they are tri-fin, with a set of Halcyon’s: drifter and o’snaps. They were glassed by ‘The dog’ who used to glass for ‘Stretch’. These stubies trim from the front and carve from the back, very fast when things speed up. Pictures in the Anderson Pescado thread. Great for clean-small wave fun…

I have always admired Liddles but felt I was neither ready nor in the right part of the world to do them justice. One day I will… It is good to hear that you are happy with yours. Any chance of a picture of your 7’6? A hull shaper in the UK, who? where?..

It would be interesting to hear news from other hull aficionados outside California, is the culture spreading? This may be a positive consequence of all the recent publicity…

so, i managed to upload some pics of my board - these were taken a bit ago - it’s not quite as clean now! It also is pictured with a TA lflex fin - which was incorrectly sent with the board by Mollusk - worked out ok though as they sent the liddle 9" very soon after and let me keep the TA fin which was cool of them.

As for where i ride - mainly on the east coast of norfolk - we have to be patient but have our moments of good surf - sadly no points - my parents use to live in Devon which was great but not any more. I travel to the south west and surf at various spots in devon and cornwall (trying to avoid the crowds) when i can!

I’m guessing hull culture will spread somewhat to the UK (especially when OCD arrives on our shores) but as others have said I think it is unlikely to become very popular - i think too many people want their return from a board straight away and aren’t willing to spend the extra time and effort it takes get a hull wired - their loss!

As for the UK shaper - I can’t really say much more at this stage as he is keen to be up and running before news gets out - suffice it to say that there will be some awesome shapes available here in the UK very soon - he has started mowing this week - as I said - very exciting!

Oh that rocker shot is sweet!

Beautiful board Spence!

That’s what a longboard is supposed to look like.

Jim

I don’t think they will be trend devices. People will try and fail, and boards willl be sold.

I saw my first North County hull yesterday, a copy of course. It was in the water and I didn’t

fully check it out, but it -sorta- had the idea. Too bad the guy rode it like a performance

longboard while in a contest. That was el lamo…

As far as trendy, I don’t see ANY 'round here…

hey santa cruz hullies…steiny, motif, vonwessels, etc

how about some mid morning hull fun

on the westside…incoming tide

indicator…need i say more…

(nudge is good as a wink to a blind man…ehe…eh…)
