I’m really intrigued by his style and approach to riding these boards. It’s much more longboard oriented than you can tell from still photos. It has a definite Malibu/Dora “thing” to it, with the footwork, hand jive, etc. I was also interested to see how far forward he cross steps to trim through certain sections and carry his speed.
Mr. Liddle has some longboard style going on too. Just from this still you really wouldn’t know he’s on a 7’ board.
I just noticed there is also a new clip added called “Stubbies”. Looks like it could be more recent but I don’t know.
Thats Greg, same time frame. most likely a 7’o’‘. That clip didnt load at first , but I hit refresh on my Mac and it started. I have 2 rare longer boards I got yesterday a 8’3’’ and 8’1’’ super smoothies last Walker blanks , shameless plug.
question: those wide tailed hulls / trash-can tails… up to what size wave (faces) are they used. seems like spinning out would be a very real issue on those.

Seems like that’s where mini side-bites would come in handy. Then you can also get away with a slightly smaller center fin.
seems like it but not realy. look at the simmons boards- i’ve seen footage of him riding some well overhead malibu and even bigger overhead reefno spin…i’ve ridden a 7 foot, 15.5 wide tail and a 7.8" with 16 wide tail in surf 8-10 feet with no issues other than being able to stay on due to increased speed.
Matt’s exactly right! The twist is the real magic of a flex tail. The narrow tail won’t twist as much so you lose that feel. Damn, that board I rode was so fun…
that “A. Davis” in the Liddle clips, would that be Andy Davis? and would that be the artist? one of the guys surfing in that clip almost looks like a typical Andy Davis caricature. I was wondering too if that davis/wojcik clip was also from the 70s?
well, i’m screwed. my gal has the hull addicion. one day,by pure accident, she went to grab her 8’6" modern tri-fin type longboard. instead she grabbed my 8’7" liddle monster smoothie which was in an identicl bag.(we just moved in together so it was an honest mistake-i think). anyway, i get a call at school, her telling me what happened. expecting the worse-like she lost it on the rocks and trashed it(no leash plug to attach her leash to) she goes on to say she loved it and now knows why we ride those kind of boards. her story of how smooth it was, the feeling and connection to the wave was like none other she ever felt.so i’m thinking “great, she likes them but she wil want to ride it more” well, every day she surfs, since then, i get a call at work from her and have to hear how she took this hull or that one, and how each time she loved 'em! how they feel like no other board she has ever ridden. i’m stoked, but concerned- when will the call come in that she took one of my favorite point wave burnersout and thrashed it…oh well, she’s hooked, understands what they are and i’m (deep down) stoked! she’s been riding tri-fin, down railed this and that and without my explanation of hulls, took on out and tuned into it right off…
Matt, I’m glad you shared that story… Andy related it to Heather and I that day out at the Rancho and I thought it was intersting to hear her first impressions. It’s cool that she accidentlly happened upon the hull design via a case of mistaken identity but now is hooked without active encouragement on your part. Goes to show just how much fun these boards are.
Heather too took a couple of my hulls out last winter and seemed to enjoy the effortless trim speed.
I’m confronting the issue head on though… she’ll have her own Andreini shortly.
nick- best to get her one or two of her own for sure. hey, you guys need to come up to the rancho for a saturday night, sunday gig some time soon! we’ll get kp out of bed and have him up too!
well, every day she surfs, since then, i get a call at work from her
Hey Matt…if she thrashes one of the cherished boards, she’ll owe you favors forever. Then you can work on your relationship issues (i.e. aren’t you supposed to be calling her at work?).

…next thing is that she’ll be checking swaylocks at work
Great story Matt! I’ve been dealing with the same thing this last year. Anytime my wife says she wants to ride a short board, it inevitably means MY hull. It’s really not a problem unless we both want to ride the same board in which case I win because it’s mine…although, in the interest of preserving our relationship, she wins.
I think I’ll buy her one for her birthday this year.
