In fact, I’ve just about decided on what MY next board is going to be. Maybe with a little help from y’all in terms of dimensions, etc. but I’m thinking about a 7’0" or 7’2" flex tail hull, probably with the 2+1 setup (I think I’ve seen Tony Masiel with a board like this that he made for himself). That way I can play around with fin set-ups a bit more to find what really works best.
Given the comments about the wide tails (~16") working better for a flex tail, I was thinking about something along the lines of motif’s board from earlier in the post:
I think the dims on this one are 19.25x22.125x17x3 but it’s only 6’1", so I may need to play with the dimensions a little bit. I kinda’ like the looks of this template though. I want to stay around the 7’ mark so that it’s a little more versatile. It seems like the small ones (sub 6’10" for me) only get going in punchy surf.
I would still get her a new one for herself. That will get major bonus points. But then you can get another for yourself. Thus adding two boards to the quiver. And if you want to spoil her, you will see where I am going with this, you suggest that the two of you head to a warm water point break in order to properly break the boards in.

Funny you should mention the idea of a romantic trip to “break the boards in,” because we have been talking about a late September surf trip. But instead of heading to lower latitudes, we were talking Nova Scotia. Set up camp during prime hurricane season with a small collection of hulls and test our luck (and wetsuits… brrrrr…).
in my case, i have a ton of hulls of varying sizes and shapes, so she will have a fairly long time to go through them all.i’m sure i’ll get one or two more in there soon enough and i’m willing to bet she be ordering her own soon enough as well…

Yes! She won’t really want “one of your old boards”, she’ll want one of her own…me too if I was in that siutation. So you get her a hull of her own that you can use too…maybe something you’ve had on your mind…and then of course it’s your turn for a new board.
Dang…almost wish my wife surfed now…but I’ll have to be satisfied with one of us having a job with medical insurance…

nels- again, i like your thinking! i was thinking the same thing-talk her into an 8 foot stringerless hull but bladed thin for her(i’ll explain she weighs less so she doesn’t need as much foam in it as i do on my boards.) i think she’ll go for it…of course i’ll have to come up with a reason why i need to try it first-perhaps something like i can get the fin tuned in for her…

My wife doesn’t surf but she does think it looks fun. I got her a wetsuit (because the water is sooo cold for her - even in the summer!) and got her out at SanO in the summer. We’ll try it again with the kids this summer.
