ProBox Problem

Any suggestions for fixing these?

Hopefully showing this time.

Are they warped? Larry torches them to get any remaining mold release agents off. If they are not warped then it’s ok.

Some of them are, yes.

Mine look the same, but no drama really. Shape is fine, so im not worried. If you’re worried, im sure some 100 grit will have them white as rain in no time, excuse the pun. Im ready to glass mine in. Just need resin, but i can’t wait!!>

Mahana is right, Larry has told me this also. Is it just the side that is warped or are the tabs warped? You should be fine unless the tabs are warped.

Howzit mahana, Are you saying that Larry ships them looking like that and he is using a torch to take the mold release off of the pro-box boxes? This has got to be some kind of joke, I had one of the first installation kits given to me by Mitch who with Robin M invented the system right in our home town of Hanalei Kauai. In those days we used some acetone To clean off the mold release and sandpaper then one day Mitch showed me he was using a dremel with a barrel sander to rough up the sides. Why would anybody use a torch on plastic, you just have to loo at that plug to see the damage done to it. Please tell me this is a bad joke.Aloha,Kokua

In summary:

The ProKote Advantage

The fin boxes are heat treated to reduce your pre-prep work before installing. They may look burnt but the ProKote process provides a great mechanical bond to resin for an even stronger finbox installation.

I think another fin box company probably tried to burn down their factory, and these are evidence…

No, seriously I’ve used ones that look just like that and they are fine… although I prefer the prior version that’s not heat treated myself (if Larry is listening). I don’t find it reduces the preprep work much at all, the “even stronger” bit is overkill, and quite frankly I’d rather scuff up the boxes manually than deal with black soot on my hands. I also find the heat makes the tabs weaker and I’ve had couple of tabs break off during the installation process, I think that’s a con to the treatment system for sure.

Just some honest feedback here, I still am a major ProBox supporter.

No joke.

Hey Dean

I know I’m “Johny come lately” here, but yes, they all look that way…well…not the black ones obvoiusly.

LOL

Hi Dean, I just got back in town and seen this post. You got these boxes 6 weeks ago and you and I discuss this on the phone when you called me at the factory. I am alittle surprised with your post since you didn’t pay for these boxes. Is there some thing esle on your mind? Mahalo, Larry

ProBox-Larry answer:

Keith, We may had a few that got alittle toasty especially at the top part of the box, but I took Sting Rays comments and backed off alot on heat. I guess that’s my nature to be over cautious than under cautious. You know I got you covered if you don’t like them I will replace them for you my friend. Mahalo, Larry

Huie, Always nice to see your beautiful work. I will check with my guy in Oz and see what’s happening so you can get more Proboxes my friend. Mahalo,Larry

Hi Kokua, I don’t really torch the boxes, they are send thru a flaming process on a motion belt. The boxes that Dean are referring to were the second batch that I had the molder turn up the heat and a few got alittle toasty. Not to worry the material of the ProBox is extremely strong and not a normal plastic that would get warpped. These boxes show the black more because they are white. If you look at the pics below, the burning process is something we came up with in the mid 80’s for Windsurfing Parts.

When you inject parts like this, the material has internal releasing agents which can effect surface bonding which is why I take this extra steps for the bonding, making it alittle less work for glass shops.

In a board this burning texture is not noticed and no distortion to the ProBox. Acetone wiping is still done which takes the black texture off the White Boxes. We had to dial things in which is why alittle color change happen with some boxes, but not to worry if someone has a problem let me know and I will trade you out or in Deans situation I didn’t take his money.

Mahalo,Larry

No worries Larry I have yet to meet a ProBox I didn’t like and you have always treated me fair and square. I might have gotten a couple of toasty ones but still no problema!! Thx

Hey Larry, I just put some toasty ones in my new fish…they went in fine! Keith was saying he liked his with Bass Ale and pepper jack cheese the best.
