" Resin Swirl " FINS ....

[meanwhile , the “fabric inlay” fin pnael …the fins from that will be the same size as my last pair , an adjusted fcs “G6” template … I’ve just got to remove the tape, and put some more resin on the inside tips part…]

[this blue fabric panel is thick enough to make a fin box fin out of …I DID consider it for a while , but felt that the “bushfire fish” goes best with four same sized fins , out of all the setups I’ve tested it with , so far. But , I DO still have more of that material , so if I were to do a [base cutaway] back fin for the box , I may be able to actually try it as a ‘truster’ [just for you , “Stubs” ] … one day !

Welcome home chipper

(2 foiled , 3 to go …the fabric inlay fins …)

Chip, I’m currently experimenting a new technique: dropping the different colors here and there then using the air gun to blow the resin in random paths.

First try was actually a disaster: I forgot to lower the air pressure (it was set at maximum pressure) and coloured resin exploded all over the shop… But I learnt from that and with low pressure you get to obtain various spider-like effects. I’m gonna try and have a flat air-outing set on my air-gun instead of the small round hole and see what can be achieved.

hiya Bill !!

… just in the hopes of an update , with photos ?

DID you ever end up doing this , a second resin swirl fin panel ? If so , I would LOVE to see the results , please ?

salut , pote !

You guys that make fins blow me away. I’m way too lazy for that. Maybe someday.

It’s not that big of a job, plus we’ve got a lot of good wood the work with on the B. I. . Koa is great for fins, and glass on’s are easy…

Have you seen the koa board on hawaiiusedboards.com? I have a couple of boards listed there too. Look under Big Island longboards.

Aloha

Awesome fins mate. I guess when you cut and foil the fins there’s no worries about “sealing” the fins is there?? ( sorry, i have to ask really stupid questions to get stuff sometimes ). Do you just polish them up when done, or add a filler coat on the whole fin, and finish sand??. I got 2 spare metres of 6oz after i lam the fish, and plenty of resin… P.S what are the little things you put your resin in ??, and for such a small amount, how much mekp is needed, just a drop or 2 ?.

Cheers

not a silly question at all, Mark…I actually wondered about that myself , as with fabric inlays , some of the cloth DOES get exposed when I foil the fins.

Do you just polish them up when done, or add a filler coat on the whole fin, and finish sand??.

I do a filler coat , and then foil . And then hand sand to around 800 wet and dry. Others may gloss and polish. I have in the past used gloss resin .

P.S what are the little things you put your resin in ??,

I get them from a scientist mate of mine . And , sometimes from good resin suppliers. They sometimes have them … the ones I get are 30 or 60ml measuring cups.

and for such a small amount, how much mekp is needed, just a drop or 2 ?.

well, I use around .5 of a ml to each cupfull, depending on the size of the panel . That’s just me , though . (And on hot summer days , use less , perhaps ? )

hey , thanks for asking these questions , by the way , Mark …I think OTHERS may have wanted to have asked the same , but been hesitant …it’s the way we all learn , here , after all… And I am always keen to hear what OTHERS do , too ! I always welcome any feedback from the TRUE fin masters here [ I am just a tinkerer , after all ]

cheers mate !

Thanks for that site, the koa is,well, it’s koa, can you imagine riding that?? Gotta be somewhere with plenty of room. Talk about a widow maker…

Gents, there’s an easier way…

Lam your plate, cut and foil your fins… then do some “fingerpainting” with different colors as a finish coat.

Back to the irregularly scheduled programming now.

good idea Charlie …

got any photos , please ?

cheers

Chip, another probably obvious and silly question. The first 2 layers of just lam resin, do you let them gel or harden before adding cloth?:?. I have exactly 40 8inch x 8inch squares awaiting finning haha ( 4 1/2 base 7’’ height 2 1/2’’ rake) I have some very daggy 70’s or 80’s bedsheets i use as drop sheets. I was thinking of a fabric inlay, instead of just plain glass. I may even use my blue resin tint too.

hi again Mark !

if you’re referring to a fabric inlay fin [?] …

Well, I usually do ONE layer of lam resin , to coat the glass ,

then lay down two [maybe up to 5] layers of 6oz cloth straight away [ie: while the resin is still wet]

…THEN I lay down the material I’m inlaying.

I find I normally need to roller a bit extra resin INTO the fabric I am inlaying , to wet it out properly , BEFORE putting down the remaining layers [I laminate around five layers at a time , generally]

…so , will this be a back finbox fin / single fin you will be making , Mark ?

Of course , I’d be really keen to see photos as you do it [if you have someone handy to use the camera while you do it , of course ?] …And I would love to see the finished fin !

cheers mate !

…I just came back from a fun , empty surf , on the 6’4 bob cooper , set up with the single keel in the fin box. Now the onshore is in properly …

I thought the fabric was the middle layer, with 20 or so layers each side??. It will be a single fin for my windsurfer-stubbie, when i get a chance to glass it!. i got some uv hardener, and its been overcast and rainy for the last 4 fu&*ing days!. At least if i bring my mekp home from work, i can do a fin panel.

Thanks for your advice ben, it is appreciated, and yes there will be at least a photo of the fin!

Cheers

yes if it is a SINGLE fin … my mistake , oops !

you are right …

inlay in the middle , 20 [or possibly more ?] layers each side of the inlay .

To get the right thickness for the box , I find it can really vary sometimes …

… depending on such things the thickness of your inlay , the fibreglass cloth , the resin [how wet or dry your lamination is] , and how much you ‘squish’ everything down with the roller when you laminate .

It might be better to add a few extra layers of cloth , just to be on the safe side …always better to have too many layers than not enough , is my theory with laying up fin panels …

ben

A few more for you Chipster!

woohoo

thanks jimmi !

those orange and yellow ones would look great on my bushfire fish ! [I’ll just fcs tab them heehee

hi Mark !

did you get to do this yet ?

cheers
