Retro Bolt build

And if any of you people drive from beach to beach with your large families in a beat up motorhome

and do nothing but surf and screw in front of your kids beware of a cease and desist  order that

will be forthcoming.  You are violating an intellectual property law and will be dealt with severely.

I will not be buying any of your $40 t-shirts Mr. Paskowitz.

Howzit Bill, Being one who has dealt with the people in chrage of logos and trade names and never spent more than the license fee. I these people should talk to you. I also am thankful for your insight on the actual design and who's mind came up with it. I don't know what is gong on in the surfing world today that one surfer/ builder would sue or send his cleaners to visit ken over a logo. Starting to remind me of the Bear Surfboards thing. I just hope that Mike reads this before he answers their call to him and tells them to take a hike.Aloha,Kokua

weak.  What they "scared" ?

Big, big, big joke… All of us who’ve been around in the '70s and later know that the “Lightning Bolt license” was available to whoever asked for it as long as they paid…

Here is a french “Lightning Bolt” by Baptiste Dupouey. Baptiste was a good shaper but there were probably at least several hundreds of other better shapers in the world… Did you say “specific”?

Just a few thoughts:

A. I'm not sure if this person is who he says he is. It is the internet......he could be a troll living in Kentucky for all we know.

B.  If he is who he says he is he just set his brand backwards 20 years by being a total jackwagon.

C.  If he is who he says he is his venture must be pretty pathetic if they are spending time worrying about a hobbiest building a single board in his garage. (no offence ment to the builder)

D.  The board in question is a tribute to a bygone erra.  At no point does the builder represent this board as a "Lightning Bolt" brand board.

E.  Nobody owns the rights to putting a stylized bolt of lightning airbrush or wood inlay on a board......its been done by just about everyone over the years although this may be the first wood inlay.

F.  Ken, keep up the good work and don't let one jackwagon on the internet stop you from doing what you love and posting pictures of your work for us to drool over.

G.  As seen in the picture below the builder clearly, boldly and prominantly has his own brand logo on this board.  If the builder had put a copy of a vintage Lightning Bolt brand logo on the board I might have some sympathy for the jackwagon.  Honestly don't see what his legal claim would be?????  Does he plan on threatening every board builder across the globe who has airbrushed a bolt of lightning on boards bearing their own brand logo.

H.  If the jackwagon weren't such a jackwagon he would contact the builder in private....not on an internet forum.  He would compliment the builder for his fine and flattering work of art and he would offer him top dollar to buy it.

first, i sent Ken a message and said he had permission to do this board, cleaners mean lawyers.

the whole thread of this stroy is called bolt boad built it wouldnt be hard to connect the board he made to Bolt boards.

if you wanted to drive from AZ to fight me feel free, i am in california, yes but i was born and rasied in hawaii with ther OG bolt boys all around me.

thats why i wanted to do this. bolt is a magic brand thats why i am trying to protect it. and keep it alive.

i hope you understand.

hi Ken,

as much as i am honored that you want to honor LB by making this board, we have spent millions to reclaim the brand.

we have Rory and Reno and soon Gerry and others making collector boards.

it is not in my power to sit back and watch people even for all the right reasons make LB boards with out permission.

i will refer this to our cleaners and have some get in touch with you soon.

sorry to be a bummer but if you had asked permission or went through the right chanels it might have been different.

my partners are not all as understanding, i will explain the intention and try to difuse the obvious crap that is coming.

you may have to distroy the board of give it to the powers of the coperate partners we share the brand with.

i grew up with Gerry and Jack Shipley and they were very specific who was allowed to make boards.

we are trying to be very specific.

i hope you understand we are trying to rebuild a legend brand here i will contac swaylock web site to inform them, and ask that you remove the bolt symbol from the board.

thanks for your understanding'

I understand your position to protect your invested endevors. I'm sure your millions are mostly invested in printing tee shirts and clothing with the Lightning Bolt logo on them.

As we all know there is little or no money in making surfboards.

I dont think a image or likeness of a lightning bolt gives you much grounds for a lawsuit.

Let me point out that no where on this board does it say Lightning Bolt, only images of a lightning bolt. An image that has been used publicly in many forms and styles, including the the style used by your company.

This board is not a mass produced item, it is a one of a kind, and not made for profit.

I guess I can let the cat out of the bag,,,,, this progect is part of a board swap challange here on Swaylock's. thats where fellow hobbiests build and exchange the finished boards ,,, "NO PROFIT"

could you please educate us and post a copy of the bolt registered trademark so this may not happen again

i understand you views.

we have surfed together many years j.

again,pm me.

herb

wow you guys are all lawyers and board builders!

A. I'm not sure if this person is who he says he is. It is the internet......he could be a troll living in Kentucky for all we know.

lets assume i am me, why else would i want to spend my time with you!

B.  If he is who he says he is he just set his brand backwards 20 years by being a total jackwagon.

i gave ken permission to do this board, your right the first email was to harsh, i was pissed.

C.  If he is who he says he is his venture must be pretty pathetic if they are spending time worrying about a hobbiest building a single board in his garage. (no offence ment to the builder)

i think hobbiest is fair, i would never approve that board, and everyone that make as fake is making a fake even for the right reasons.

D.  The board in question is a tribute to a bygone erra.  At no point does the builder represent this board as a "Lightning Bolt" brand board.

the strike mark is a trade mark, and the threat is bolt, trust me its plenty.

E.  Nobody owns the rights to putting a stylized bolt of lightning airbrush or wood inlay on a board......its been done by just about everyone over the years although this may be the first wood inlay.

the strike mark that you see on the deck is a lightning bolt trade mark, if it had another jag line in it i couldent say a thing, like capt. shazam kind.

F.  Ken, keep up the good work and don't let one jackwagon on the internet stop you from doing what you love and posting pictures of your work for us to drool over.

i think what ken does is great too, i grew up watch really great legends making boards and i loved it, i wish i had the skills, but dont. i hope though you realize your

G.  As seen in the picture below the builder clearly, boldly and prominantly has his own brand logo on this board.  If the builder had put a copy of a vintage Lightning Bolt brand logo on the board I might have some sympathy for the jackwagon.  Honestly don't see what his legal claim would be?????  Does he plan on threatening every board builder across the globe who has airbrushed a bolt of lightning on boards bearing their own brand logo.

dosent matter, stoy is about bolt build, and there is the bolt?

E.  Nobody owns the rights to putting a stylized bolt of lightning airbrush or wood inlay on a board......its been done by just about everyone over the years although this may be the first wood inlay.

if the bolt is different than the bolt we use you are right its open domain, but that bolt, mr. jack is ours....

yes, mr. shark, if you use the bolt strike mark you are using someone elses logo, weather you put your name or my name or jackwagon on it! the whole story is about Bolt!

look i told Ken i wont try to persue him for this board, but if you all cared at all for Lightning Bolt you would help us perserve it! not get pissed when we ask for a little respect when people rip us off, because thats what this is! we spent the money to bring back our lifes favorite brand and want it to mean something......

thanks Herb,

let me make this clear.

Ken is a great guy and no one from my office is going to hassle him

cleaner i ment lawyer, not i wanted to beat him up!

we love lightning bolt allot to thats why we spent our money to re launch this brand in the worst surf economy in years

please help us if you have any respect for LB.

Rory and Reno and Gerry and hopefully, Parrish and BK will make bolt boards , jackie dunn is working on one now, ken is the man but i want to elevate the brand so i got to protect it. much respect to ken and his skill, no dis-respect.

ok!

but if the white guy with a hawaiian name who lives in AZ wants to still fight no problem.

have a nice day

Hmmm, I’ve always loved the lines of those bolt boards.  I think it’s all the images of Jerry at pipe.  Bright red boards on dark blue waves. My mind associates those boards with a with perfect surf, great surfing, less hype driven time.

Now, not so much…  How sad is that.

Great board Ken.

Don’t let that Jack-wagon get you down.

I think many would agree with me in saying that in no way shape or form is a backyarder's build a threat to a large scale company like yours. To go as far as saying that you need to have it destroyed and that you will get lawyers involved, seems a little overkill to me. Did you even ask him to stop building boards with a bolt on them again, or did you just drop the "lawyer bomb" on him? I think a respectable way of handling your situation would have been in private.I can understand your problem if he was mass producing these boards and actually becoming a threat to your operation, but this is not the case. Let him keep his work, or buy it from him(sounds lik you have the $ to do so).

Ken,

Nice board as always, and keep up the GREAT work :)

jp,

i have always respected you and your family..........i know you know that.

i love lb's ..........i've owned several.

i caught up to rory and pat rawson over at basham's last year when you guys were starting this brand back up.

rory gave me the skinny and i said cool!!!!!!!!! jp's very cool with me...........we shared some stories and parted our ways, but before rory left ,he gave me some lb stickers and i proudly display one on my car................it is the only one on my car.

i'd be more than happy to assist you in anyway you need to rekindle lb............to me lb is an icon.

and thanks for going easy on ken.............he's a great guy............and you know i'd never let anyone use my templates unless it was someone i totally trusted.

when you have the time and feel the need or want .........pm me here, and i'll fly you my cell #.

we need to talk.

my best to you and yours

aloha/mahalo,bra !

herb

Wow, you got Kokua fighting mad.  Impressive.  When one of the nicest, most helpful guys in the world want to trade hands with you.  You’ve officially crossed the line.

If you knew the entire story behind “the guy from Arizona with the Hawaiian name.” You would REALLY feel like a jack ass.

Allright everyone,,,,, simmer down

Its all good with Mr Bolt

no cleaners, ,, no worries

the man is just trying to protect his interests

he appologized for being harsh at first,

we have been Pm'ing and all is well,

No more stab's or remarks ,,, got it?

the king has spoken!

NICE THREAD!

Whenever many of us see the new "Lightning Bolt" trademark logo now all we will remember is the guy on the internet acting like a 4 year old over a guy building a board in his garage.  Way to represent.

Hey Mako

thanks for the back up

but please let it go

he's actually a good guy,
