RR on Oahu

Resin Reseach epoxy is now on Oahu. The contact number is 808-292-9645.

Western Australia next Greg??

Please…

With sugar on top and a cherry…

I can sell the stuff anywhere. Just when it goes out of the country I need a distributor that will antie up to that first order. It’s not that big a deal but so many surfboard distribtors seem still scared of epoxy. Still, now we’ve got two distributors in Hawaii, two in CA. one in TX, one in FL, one in Japan, one in Costa Rica, and two locations of our own in FL and AZ. We’ll be opening another in the Carribean real soon and possibly Brazil. Austrailia and Europe should be next… hopefully.

So things are going OK huh?

Making progress… all I can ask for at this point.

greg i would love to get the stuff down here …at the moment , got to many fingers in to many pies …

but once im organised and established in my new direction , consider it a done deal that i will order resin from you …

what your resin does is just perfect for what i need , what im using now is no where near as good as your stuff just taking data sheets into consideration …

let alone all the positive feedback …

and after all youve written about performance issues , and how youve matched the resins properties back to performance , its the stuff i want …

probably be at least 3 months or so …

but it will be a definate …

regards

BERT

Thanks Bert… look forward to it. I’d love to get your feedback on the different resins flex charcteristics. So much we can control now. By the way, I’m getting ready to shape a concave deck sandwich board with a carbon springer inside. Blank is starting at 2" so this thing will be THIN.

classic , looks like its time to get my space suit ready , coz the space race has just left the solar system …

i got me some new planets to explore …

now i understand the comment space cadet …

seems to me tho that while your out there , your going to find stuff you wouldnt find anywhere else …

if i find anything interesting i will just report home once in a while …

just dont forget im out there …and make sure the klingons dont get me …

sorry to everyone else if only greg knows what i just said …

regards

BERT

that boards sounds like it should go off , may need greater range of movement in the springer unless its paper thin …

wait till you see the double parabolic springers on the concave apexes , i call that one the morph bottom …

coz the shape changes to suit the turn your trying to do , by shifting the load internally and morphing your flexible bottom …

The springer will be free floating, not attached to the skin. I’m still formulating this in my head. I’m thinking 2" carbon tape around the perimeter of the bottom with extremely light 3/4 oz glass in the middle both under a layer of Aircell but not attached at the rail. I could also use balsa across the bottom over that instead of the Aircell. I have both here. Spheretex on the deck with a layer of 4oz. warp on each side over top. Finally warm enough to build some boards here. Wish I had more time to try stuff out.

Oh yea Bert, I told you that I’ve been riding one of Holly’s boards this winter. I was first chair up last week and on my second ride up I got to inspect my track. The board has so much pop that it actually comes off the snow between turns. Just throws you from one turn into the next with about four feet of blank surface in between. Now that’s flex return… and fast? Oh my… Surfboards have to do this too.

Classic is the right word Bert.

now i understand the comment space cadet …

Years ago a good friend informed me that a guy we knew well, and surfed a lot with, thought I was a ‘space captain’. Unoffended, my friend asked me why. If I’m considered by others to be captain of my own space then I can only take that as a complement.

Bert, you, Greg, eveyone here is in their own space. I complement you all for sharing and being part of the same space.

I’m learning from the crossover, as Im sure many others are. You guys are doing stuff some of us know off, but have never applied to a board before. Maybe we will eventually. When? My brain is ticking all the time, so I guess it’s started.

Thanks.

space cadets , and crossover sports, eh ?

Hmmm… well then , THIS may interest you ‘wildy’ !

[you may have seen this before somewhere , but mate …I couldn’t resist ! It needs to be seen again .]

The Steak Knife?

Board leaving the water between turns huh?

I just got my glimpse of the future.

Dam.

SUNSET was doing something with adjustable spring loaded tails in the mid late 70’s.

Are you preloading before you glass the springer?

Goddammit Mark, quiet down NOW! That is my idea. I talked to Greg about this briefly over the phone. You and Greg can PM me and we’ll discuss this at length.

All I can say now is that the serration idea was first inspirted by a Happy Meal toy my daughter threw at me from the back seat. A day later I read about Lib’s new idea. (BTW, the Happy meal toy is more innovative than Lib’s knives).

I need a innovative shaper to help. Greg, I’m moving to Vero, if you’re coming back home PM let me know.

I can’t wait to get a comparison between RR and the Fiberglass Hawaii epoxy

anyone, beuler…beuler…

Thanks Greg for the plug. You can also email me at jtroydesigns@hawaii.rr.com if you have any questions.

Thread hijack - Moving to Vero from Mass. huh… My parents live in Vero during the winter (I’m stuck in Jersey) but whenever I visit there are usually some waves at South Beach and as you know just point your car north on A1A for the better, more famous spots. Your lucky in that Melbourne and the surrounding area is the epicenter of the surfboard building industry on the EC. I think I’m going to get a Loehr or Forstall epoxy and stash it in Vero for my visits.

Do you have a job lined up in the area? It seems kind of ‘quiet’ careerwise there. If there were more companies and industries to work at, like here in the Northeast I would move to Fl in a heartbeat.

Anyway, always enjoy reading your humorous posts here and on Surfermag.com. Good luck w/ your move.

Rgds, John

Since additive f (xylene) is the saving grace for rr epoxy, when would be appropirate application for rr epoxy without xylene? In board manufacturing is rr epoxy essentially

not useful without xylene? What is the current supply of xylene on oahu? Does G.L. still recommend only “good ventilation” and no respirator even when using xylene??

Additive F is xylene based. There’s certainly more in there than just xylene, I needed something that would keep the solid polymers in solution. As for ventilation, Additive F only goes into the mix at 1%, which is hardly any at all. A cap full is 10 cc’s which is enough for a 30 oz batch. I still do suggest good ventilation but a cap of Add F is certainly not going to change that much.

RR epoxies will also work fine without Add F. We still sell resin to companies that make tables, do clocks, and decoupage etc. They can’t use Addtive F because it has a slight effect on clarity which shows in their products. Add F is for boards and board builders. That’s who we developed it for. The problem you saw years ago had to do with the speed of that particular formula and humidity where you were working. We had the same issues with hot coats you had. Actually heating the hot coat resin in a microwave eliminated that problem. Additive F eliminated it far better. The newer resins are quite a bit better, but even with the improvments in the resins, I still won’t work without Additive F on boards. The stuff just works Hopefully the guys on Oahu have given you a call by now.

CMP you can call me or email me with any questions.
