School me on this late 70's Brewer

I just picked up this never ridden, never waxed late 70’s Brewer shaped by James Turnbull. I’m guessing it’s a 1978 from the leash plug?  I know a little bit of info, James Turnbull started Country Surfboards around the same time, I believe.

Wondering what other info on this board may be known?  Was this before Brewers production was moved over to CA?  What could the value of an unridden board of this vintage be?

Many Thanks.

I’m going to say your 70s board is really from the mid 90s when Dick Brewer was reissuing some of his boards.  I had a beautiful mini-gun from this series of boards that I sold after it went unridden for a year.  Never should have sold it.

Wow. Crazy to hear. I would have never thought this board was from the 90’s.  Even with that strange bhane box with the fin entry way far forward. I guess this things getting waxed up and ridden then.

I am not sure how it was in america and hawaii in the 1970s , but …

…  here in oz , I’m pretty sure ‘leash plugs’ featured a metal bar .

plastic ‘leash plugs’ didn’t come in here in oz , till MANY years later …

Valid point. Didn’t even notice that small detail. Great info.

Fin box gives it away as well…

Very nice any date you slice it…

Fill me in on that fin box. I’ve never seen one like it. What era did they start using those?

Without having close up shots of the aforementioned leash plug and fin box, that board could possibly be of 70s vintage. Jim Turnbull is a name I have’nt heard in a long time (I recall hearing he passed away a few years back)…he may have started the label but I do know Country Surfboards was around from at least 1969, the year I first tried surfing the north shore as a 14 yr old grom. Whatever the case…thats a nice board.

The other thing that really has me leaning towards the 90s vintage is the design, size and quality of the logo and shaper’s marks.  Looks 90s to me…not 70s.  Same style logos as on my 90s brewer.  My 90s brewer also had an amazing gloss coat like this one does.  I could be completely wrong here.  Hoping someone with direct knowledge chimes in.

That is an unusual finbox. Never seen one with the slot so far forward. Looks like a long box, too. What’s the length?

The leash plug is definitely not late 70s. I think the first time I saw that type was mid to late 80s, at the earliest.

Sidenote: Country Surfboards was founded by Mike Turkington, Mike Horack, and Bob “Wolfman” Stay in 1967.

Just a little heads up for you, MDT. Your pics, as posted, are way too big. Not sure if you’ve seen the recent discussion about file sizes here, but you really should try to scale them down before posting.

For instance, one pic has the following properties:

3,264px × 2,448px (scaled to 832px × 624px)

3264 x 2448 is about twice the size of most people’s computer screens. There’s really no advantage in posting pics that big, and in fact it causes issues for some people because it slows down the page as it loads. So, you might try resizing pics to around 1200 wide prior to uploading. It will make it easier for some members to view them. HTH

When I started at Brewer, one of my first jobs was installing leash plugs.

At the time (1983) the plugs were smaller than that.

I was told before that they were bigger.

We got them from Chuck Brewer.

He was a early plastic injected molds guy.

That box appears to be a windsurfer box.

Windsurfers were made during the early 80’s.

So tough call.

Pretty board though.

Agree.         Point of interest:    When I made the first leash plugs, out of white PVC end caps in 1971, I used a 1/4th inch dia  Nylon rod as the leash attachment.      No corrosion issues, and plenty strong.       Later did under the board leash  attachments, with Nylon rod, cross drilled in the rear of the box, which later morphed into through the box leash attachment.     Under the board  leash attachment has a much lower tendancy to ‘‘tombstone’’ in larger surf.

Awesome info you guys are all giving. Thanks so much. Here’s a few more photos.

The box looks like it reads: MULII FIN SYSTEMS PO BOX 93 BYRON BAY 2481

The closeup of the deck is two numbers. It looks to read “77”

Maybe it says JT not 77, as in the shapers initials.  The other sig looks like a lam to me.

That “sig” on the deck, near the leash plug, is unquestionably a lam.

So, the finbox is from Australia? Kind of odd to find one on a Brewer

There are vintage board “collectors” who are rebuiding old Brewers to new condition and sold as vintage boards .

Glass stripped , shape cleaned up and reglassed like the original .  This may be one of those .

It’s definitely a lam.

I think one of them posts here.
