Remember Waxmate? I just bought a bar on ebay for $23. What a hoot. Might melt it all over the inside of my van like the old days. Get that vintage smell going. The ebay seller has one bar left . I think it used to be 10 cents a bar in the late 60’s.
I’ll give you $11.50 for a half a bar.
At least its not grape. I Used to love the smell of sex-wax strawberry, until they started using that scent in bathroom urinals at restaurants. Makes me sick just to think about it.
I still remember as a kid getting a board or wetsuit for christmas. The smell of coconut and fresh neoprene brings back the best memories.
Yep you are right Sammy. I am just off on this retro trip right now. Shaping beaknose flat deck boxy rail sticks with resin tints and such. ya know…like the 70’s Lightning Bolts and Brewers. Useless shapes but fun to make and they look good. I do this stuff for fun nowadays.
I can’t wait to sniff my bar of waxmate. May have to buy a damn Volks Van. Another useless thing. Life is good
That stuff was awful. It would crumble and flake to where half was wasted during application. Maybe it was intentional so folks would use it up faster? The only good thing about it was the scent.
Agree with you up to the point about the shapes being useless. I say bring back the beak in all its forms. Nothing better than watching that beak do nothing but look good while paddling.
Yea…the beaknose is for sure a viable thing on modern boards. looks great and gives you some meat up front. I just did a modern fish with a beaknose and they love it. A lot of people don’t know how to shape em. (leave that stringer high).
The vintage style boards I am producing right now are just cop[ies of what I was doing in the 70’s. Nice and fast down the line but outside of that you need big juice to make them work. Maybe beak noses should be a whole new discussion.
Here are some pics of the boards. None of them finished yet.
those are awesome cleanlines! still havent found anyone to polish them up for you?!
here is a 6’2 along the same lines i just did. i wasnt even alive when you guys were riding these things but a couple templates have been passed down to me and they are the best for those super clean low tide hollow sessions! this one is not true to form as it has a little more rocker, thinner rails, concaves, etc to make it a little more user friendly (i did not glass this one - it was jamie of maya up in surfside…)
Ha… I used to love the strawberry sex wax too. Now I use the blue or purple sexwax if I can’t get the white one.
I am glad someone else remembers. Still that stuff would tear the hairs out of my knees, and leave craters so bad, that sometimes I couldn’t surf for weeks, but still did.

i always liked the banana or coconut scented waxes of the days..............i remember the old grape scented waxmate ,when it would get old (on the board) it would smell like motor oil.
i had a friend that use to recycle wax............ugly browny/grey looking stuff............and to top it off he used stolen urinal hockey pucks to scent it.............lmfao !
btw: mr. clean i have a bar of pre-waxmate ,"superwax" you know, the mild mannered surf wax............it's just a block of parafin but it still has the standard brand paint store price sticker on it," 10 cents".
i use to buy my resin and materials at the standard brand in downey,ca. when i couldn't get down to seal beach and buy from marina fibercraft............you remember marina fibercraft don't you rat ?
sad how that ended.

The ''secret'' additive, that made the wax (paraffin) soft, was in fact plain old motor oil. This from Steve Knorr, of Knorr Candles, who did the original formulation.
Standard Brands, I haven’t heard that name in a while; we used to get stuff there like those little tubes of pigment back in the early seventies… Never heard of Marina Fibercraft, but I can remember a few epic days at southside Seal with Kurt Ausburger, the star and main attraction. Stuff like that seemed to reeeeally matter back then. Great memories guys. This kind of stuff is what I enjoy the most about this place; collective shared memories, in different places at during the same times. Oh my outlines looked like crap back then, and I am sure Thrailkill’s looked way better. Good stuff Herb.
marina surfcrafts was a supplier back in the late 60s/early 70s.
a real ma and pa place.....use to be right around the corner from harbour's place on marina drive...........it's now a sail fabric store, and has been since the close of mfcs.
after mfcs closed i had to travel to your neck of the woods over at hannifin's of sometimes windnsea or gordie in a last pinch........jack/gary over at wns.......... and gordie use to treat me very well.
they were always happy to see me..........maybe because i got what i needed and didn't ask a bunch of stupid questions...........i dunno?
i miss those days rat.............i really do............didn't have a dime to my name...............didn't have a real future..............now....................we have this place..............a place to share.
obtw rat.............kurt sends his regards...............he still makes a mean gun!

Hah! Sammy, thanks for the link. The featured Bubblegum really stirs memories. When I fist moved to the North Shore, we scored a case of the stuff from B. Baker and the smell sends me right back to those times. That and Plumeria...ahh Smoky Acre Blossoms.
B.B's the man. Used to get a real kick out of seeing him in the water paddleing a tandem board with some young Wahine's apple right in his face. Biggest smile ever.
I got my bar in the mail. Getting ready to break the plastic seal…roll a fat one…and watch 5 Summer Stories. There is a 68 Volks camper for sale calling my name. Anybody got a set of Aloha racks?
