Howzit, I’m looking to get started shaping sometime before this fall. I’m looking for a shop to ‘sit in’ on someone who knows the craft. Anybody shaping in NJ or close to would be greatly appreciated.
Where do you live?
You might want to call Paul Baymore at Fly Surfboards, near Avalon in Cape May County. He might let you sit in. It’s probably his slow season now, but during Spring season he will be mowing some foam.
CALL BRIAN WYNN, HE JUST MOVED OUT HERE FROM SAN DIEGO AND IS FOR SURE THE BEST SHAPER IN THE AREA HE IS ALSO A GREAT GLASSER! DONT HAVE HIS # BUT SURFERS SUPPLIES IN OC SHOULD HAVE IT!
I live outside of AC in Egg Harbor Township
Thx for the replies, I’ll contact Glenn at Surfer Supplies and see if I can get a hold of Brian Wynn. Mahalo and Happy New Year!
I would try to sit in with Paul Baymore (mentioned previously in this thread)- solid shaper, often thinks/shapes “outside the box”. There is also Planet Blue surfboards, located on Rt 9 between Tuckerton and Manahawkin/LBI. I’m not sure of the address, but his shop is across from a police station. From what I know of him (a few friends have gotten boards from him) he has a very open-door policy. I could try to get some contact info if interested. Actually, same goes for Paul- I’m friends with one of his top team riders. http://www.eastcoastsurfer.com/sak/recentphoto/GregSakowicz-for-web.jpg
I’m interested in finding an opportunity like this in SD county, any ideas?
If you are in Georgia you can sit in with Harry Balzack at his underground factory. He can’t shape worth a damn but he likes to show off and its free. R.B.
Yeah, where can I find that Paul Baymore???
Hackeysaky- I’m interested, it would be greatly appreciated whatevery information you can find me. Mahalo
Myself included in wanting to sit in on a shaper’s session. I’ve been researching shaping for over a year now and have begun my first few boards, none glassed yet. I am copying my Ashton 9’0" performance noserider, and a friend’s Robert August Wingnut II 9’4". I spend my summer weekends in LBI, and there is a shaper (can’t think of his name right now) on the island. Also, I spend a few weeks out of the year in North Carolina on the Outer Banks. Master shaper and glasser Tim Nolte has his new shop just North of the barrier islands. Even if you cannot sit in with a shaper no worries. Dive right in. This site has so much to offer. With the archives it’s just as good as any manual or video you can buy. Don’t be afraid. Find a blank and dive in with any tools you can find. Good luck. -cjs
Thanks! Anybody in NJ ordering blanks? Pls let me know if you’ve got room for a 6’7" A clark blank, or maybe two (4 per 7’ shipping box), of course I’ll kick in for shipping!
I just ordered 3 blanks on Monday, I would of had room for an extra blank. I live outside of Mays Landing, Estell Manor actually but people don’t usually know where that is, my email is if I can help you out any. Good luck. Frank
YOU CAN THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX ALL YOU WANT, BUT IF YOUR IDEAS DONT WORK WHATS THE POINT
NJrightcoaster, I will be ordering blanks soon, within next 2 weeks. I live in philly, less than an hour from you. You can get in on my order if you like. I have only shaped a few boards, but i would be more than happy to show you what i’ve learned, and help you through your first blank. I have a good set of shaping tools and a makeshift set-up in the garage. You can email me if you like at -jim
Ha, I actually do know where that’s at. I’m in Bargaintown near the Hamilton Mall (most know where that is). I’m not started yet, I’m turning my shed into my bay by this coming spring. for now I have what’s available in my garage to work…
“shaper???”, I don’t understand why you responded to my “outside the box” comment in the following manner (care to elaborate?): 7 January 2004, at 6:27 a.m. YOU CAN THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX ALL YOU WANT, BUT IF YOUR IDEAS DONT WORK WHATS THE POINT http://www.eastcoastsurfer.com/sak/recentphoto/GregSakowicz-for-web.jpg
Josh, like the other Sway’s, you can stop by my Encintas laboratory, for some tutorials on what REAL shaping is about. Be prepare to get dirty. Live free or die
Wow, it would truly be an honor. How do I go about doing that - just stop by? Let me know and I’ll take you up on the offer for sure. I’m in Del Mar area. Thanks again! Josh
