I’ve been surfing for about 2 years now, and I’m looking to step down from my longboard. I started on an 8’2, then I dropped down to a 7’0, and I’m now at the point where I’d like to try something with some more manueverability. I’m 5’7 / 150 lbs, and I’m thinking of stepping down to either a 6’4 shorty or a retro-fish.
Would anyone mind recommending where I should start? Thanks guys.
retro fish, alternative shapes are my favorite boards, you have the most fun, still able to get a lot of performance out of them, but you can go much shorter with both of those boards and your specs, what do you want this board for? small waves? your go-to board? hh+? a fish is a great everyday board that you can always have fun on. you could probably go as small as 54 fish something like 54x20x2 1/2 would be nice for you? but than are you a good paddler? maybe you want more volume for paddling, do you want to throw airs? than you may want a lighter board. Their is no right answer.
Thanks for the quick and detailed response. That was good stuff. To answer your questions, I mainly surf waist to sometime overhead beachbreak waves. I’m definitely not at the point (don’t think I’ll ever be) where I’m launching airs. I just figured that a fish might be a good step down from a mini-log rather than going to a shortboard.
I noticed you are on the E. Coast. Do you or anyone have any good recommendations on where I could get a good/affordable fish in So Cal? Thank so much.
Thanks for the recommendation. His twinzer fish looks pretty clean. Have you ridden any of his boards? Also, what would be some of the ads/disads of a twinzer over a quad? Thanks man.
Thanks for all of your helpful responses. I’m still looking around for a fish/hybrid shape. I talked to a buddy of mine that said he has a “Pocketknife Model” shaped by Uhuru Surfboards and he loves it. Does anyone know much about this shaper (http://www.uhurusurfcraft.com/boardModels.html)? His boards look pretty clean. Thanks guys.
1 You added nothing to the conversation, except to mention a surfboard retailer, on a three year old topic. So, you came in like nothing more than a spammer.
2 There is no such thing as a “retro fish”. It’s either a fish, or it isn’t. Just because a board has a split tail and two fins, that does not make it a fish.
