show me you fabric inlays

I'm considering doing a fabric inlay on my first board. I found out how this is done by searching swaylocks. It would be awesome if those who have done this could post up pictures of their inlays. Opionons or advice also welcomed

Thanks:)

These are just a few I did and all of them have already been posted here, sorry…

They are all beautiful! Is the second one layered fabrics or is that just one pattern?

The first and only longboard I've ever built back in 1994.  Also the only fabric inlay I've ever done.

Layered different pieces of fabric, as in a patchwork. I made this board for the … (?) edition of the Swaylock’s gathering at Plaskett Creek.

did you sew the pieces together like quilting or just cut them out and lay them together? sorry if this is a dumb question;)

See your other post: I replied there.

Hi Guys,

A lot of very beautiful things here!

Here is my first try with coton cloth inlay. I have been surprised (new comer!) how much the cloth sucked epoxy and how strong! On this one there is 200g (6oz) + cloth (thai sarong) + 200g and I even put a patch for the fins… concrete hard and a bit heavy  I’ll go without the first layer on the next one for sure! Also had issue with white spots where, I think, I squegeed to hard… Any suggestion about that?!

Many years ago ,too poor to buy glass, I sacrificed a bed sheet and glassed a board with that.

Im not sure of the thread count but it was brittle but waterproof and I laminated it just like it was glass.

What technique did you guys use for the fabric and is the fabric weight / composition a factor ?

Could you use cotton or polyester or hemp or rayon ?

Ive got some XXXL floral cabana shirts available.

 Thanks.

I’ve used cotton and cotton/poly blends with epoxy with no issues. I just use standard fabric from the local craft store and pre wash it just to be safe. …never tried a heavy cloth. I tape off the area and trim just like a cut lap when the resin starts to kick. Just brush some resin on the blank first to get some good soak in the cloth.

two of my favorites from the past few months!

I’ve been scavenging a lot of fabrics and making a nice pile for digging through at a later date…I’ve found its a really nice way to come up with some quick inspiration if the well is running dry or I feel like I’m stuck on one color

Those colours are awesome on the bottom pic surferguy!!! inlay and resin tint combo , great idea!

Its fun collecting cotton offcuts and various patterns that will work for glassing.

Hi lindsay, I think for your first go with an open weave lighter cotton or linen as its easier to wet out and also you can see your tape lines through it for cutting it of after its gelled… prepare plenty of resin as it soaks a bit more than standard glass and you dont want to have dry spots as they will show up when you do your other layers…

Been doing a few with cloth mainly linen for strength (main pic), funny about the shirt above, just did one for a customer with some paua cloth and a pair of his sons old surf shorts! top of board on pic ( logo to be inserted)…

And an old one where I used Lava lava cloth for tail inlay

heres the linen one, didnt come up…

my first attempt at a silk fabric inlay

here’s a few…

Hi,

Here is the last one. I went for EPS - 120g (4oz) - Cotton cloth - 120g (4oz). 850g of epoxy just for that bottom and rails, so pretty heavy but strong reslut. This better quality cloth worked better because of the tighter weaves I think. Import too not to press hard with the squegee not to get little air bubbles…

REALLY like this one Tjrm63!

Looks great! Did you cutlap it or do they wrap around to the bottom?
