Show us your fabric inlays

I call it surfboard art at $3.99 a yard.  It is old school but it is a great way to add personality to a board. I kind of stick to a Hawaiian / Polynesian theme but there are so many other ideas out there.Show us your boards with fabric inlays.  Here are some of the ones I’ve done over the years.  Please share yours.

Another one.

Other fun ways to play with fabric.

Women have there own ideas.  Here are two made under their direction.  Came out pretty well.

These can be challenging but it is a great way to hide blank/shaping flaws.

Clean work UncleD. Shapes and inlays. Always dig your stuff. You have a great pick of patterns also. Nice going.

Uncled,

Well Done. I am interested in the process (I see you have done segments, strips and full decks). Can you walk us through the stages, fabric types you like, taping, glassing and any sanding issues? I have a really nice bit of fabric from Japan I am thinking about doing an inlay on. Thanks.

I high recommend watching the Master Glasser Series DVDs featuring Roger Brucker who post here on Swaylocks as Cleanlines.  This provided the best technique on doing fabric inlays and overall surfboard glassing.  I provided a bunch of links below that will explain most of the process but watching the DVD will give it to you in a nut shell. There are bunch of instruction on Swaylocks that should get you started.  Also I provided you a link to a PDF with instructions. I learned the process with the resources I mentioned.  It’s all there.

Here are a few I’ve done in the last year or so. All done with batik fabric I picked up in Bali back in 2013.

Beautiful work. You just gave me some great ideas.

In the middle of this one right now. Still got to glass on the fins, pinline it and hot / gloss coat.

Would love to see this one with a shinny gloss job!

All,

Nice work. Cass love the board design and inlays (specifically the one you are holding- size dims?). Simon, well done. Uncled- thanks for the links. Good stuff. Seems like a lot of ways to skin the cat but several preferred methods. I actually hadn’t planned on doing a fabric inlay any time soon but seeing this has changed my mind. Im looking at doing a Dharma 2 type board soon so looks like resin tint and fabric could be a solid choice… this is why I love Sways when people are posting their work- inspiring.

That’s not me Clint, that’s the satisfied customer. I’m much less photogenic and try to avoid cameras whenever possible.

It’s 6’1" x 20.5" x 2.5", if memory serves me right (which it often doesn’t). 16.25" tail @ 1’ and 16 5/8" nose @1’.

This was my first attempt of fabric inlay on a surf board,

It was a total learning experience around the fin boxes, mega bubbles and tenting;(

My only attempt was on a longboard chop down.liked how it came out and thinking of doing it again with some funk

Thanks for sharing the pictures of all this nice boards everybody.

Got me a lot of inspiration.

Would like to see this one under a nice shinny gloss coat!

that is the money shot for sure!

I bought this fish off Craigslist for $20, rebuilt the deck with some new foam, used a fabric inlay under the new glass to hide the repairs (fabric and rattle cans, ha). Been out with it quite a few times, super fun board.
