What was your prep procedure with the eps blank? Spackle? Microballoons?

That board belongs on the epoxy thread. Very Very nice job.

Fun on the hotcoat

Those are just swirls Greg. Or acid splashes however you wanna call them. I prefer the term “Slob job” lol. The really good laminators have great color separations. The so so guys get alot of mud. I highlighted in my post above how it’s done. Color choice has alot to do with it. You gotta choose colors that don’t just blend together, but stay somewhat separated…

Mr. Lokbox

I would think that one of the tricks would be to not catch the runoff and repour?

wouldnt the colors stay apart more if they were introduced to the board individualy?

I also guess theres a hundred ways to do this type of work

each will get its own effect

Yes Ken. Everyone has their own methods and style. To answer Paul uk yes those first pics are at Fords. One of the laminators there has a very unique style that is often replicated but never duplicated…

Lockbox, I should have explained. I’ve done a fair number of swirls and understand the basics. Mine have all been epoxy.

But that one was so crisp, with delicate lines, and so many colors. The lines were so thin. Just really amazing. I wondered how it was done. Most I’ve seen are just color smeares on fabric, lacking color separation. It is easy to be an amature swirler.

No worries Greg, I understand. Like I said the guy that did that one has a very distinct style of slob job that no one else has really figured out how to do. They get close but like you said, the colors are so crisp. Out of respect to him I just can’t give away his secret here. He spent years trying to figure it out and came up with a method. He mudded out quite a few boards in the process. Interesting though, the glasser at Moonlight Gary Stuber was asked to glass a board with this style of swirl. Specifically. Since this guy got his start from Gary, when Gary called him to see if he could clue him in, he of course said “come on over”. Probably the only guy on the planet that this guy would let watch him, or show his secrets to. Hour and a half later Gary walked out with the goods. It’s come full circle. The teacher coming back to the student many years later. I dig it. Cheers

didn’t show up the first time…

wow. there’s a lot of inspirational artwork here…

my only resin swirl: 6’0 quad fish, eps/epoxy black and blue swirl

Here is Gary Stubers first attempt at this type of swirl. I told him that I wanted alot of white in it and I chose the colors. He did a great job and I’m stoked that he took the time out of his day as well as buried his ego to go and learn to do this type of swirl. This guy has pretty much taught almost every laminator in San Diego and to do that just shows true class. Here is a link to the recycled board thread to try to convince you guys that not everyone over at that other place is only interested in the latest LOST model.

That took some sack to undertake as a #1 !

I had seen the first few pics and bailed, but you made some magic happen–congrats

Update here when finished out–shape looks great.

Unreal! Can’t say how much this stokes me out! Stuber is THE man. Alex is the kid. But quickly becoming the man. Gary was glassing surfboards hawaii boards in the early 60’s. Take a second to fathom that. Around 45 years. And he goes to the kid for some tips. Legend.
