TRUE, THAT! The above and yours and the rest are all cases in point. I like the mellow transitions between colors as much if not more too, but personal pref
Darthvader, Really cool boards especially the red combo board splash. Mahalo,Larry
ill try and add some…
the resin must kick fast as not to mix. if it takes you more than 12 minutes to lam a board color work is not your sport. the top level color workers spent at least a year doing clears and working with resin at diferent stages of board building to understand the medium and what needs to be done. before entering the “color game”
i don’t think epoxy is the best medium for resin art work. most of the pics put up by the lok of box are laminators from the same “dojo” one shows one the other takes it to another level and so fourth. when you have a shop with surfboard craftsmen the level just gets raised and raised every one is helping each other and collectively a lot is learned in a very small amount of time.its how you end up with things like this.
half resin color half cloth boards
uncomprehendable resin tints
black resin dragons done like resin pinlines.
Heres my first go at it
the bottom I droped colors seperatly and spred
heres the top I used tints and with a yellow base added blue ,red, green and orange
gave it one stir and poured into different spots
Heres a shot of the rail
I trhink I did OK for my first attempt
notes to the first timers
only use basic colors and ony maybe two or three at a time
let the intermidiate colors come alive during the pour,
example: yellow base add a small amount of blue and small amount of red give it one stir
when it pours and you spred it you will automaticly get some green and orange and less of the mudd that I got in my deck

I’m calling BULLSHIT on Mr Darthvader and his comments. My third glass job was a swirl and it came out wonderful. Look at that board that TENOVER posted. I meet Tenover and his real job has nothing to do with glassing surfboards. Yeah right ,12 minutes…Bah humbug!!!
Do a search for STINGRAY. All my resin jobs take 30-40min ,maybe more…
Hey backyarders !!! Go for it!
You have the skills!!!
Stingray
well then you have chosen a path i can not follow…bullshit shit comes from bulls and im not a a bull.
i was letting you all in on a secret but thats fine do it how you want and you will continue to wounder how “we” get tight crisp color seperation while you get mudded out blur jobs.
I agree with you Mr Vader
but I supose some people get it right the first time
As for myself I over shot and got a bit of mudd
I can see that opaques are best for swirls and tints are better for doing single color tints
But if you dont try …
ken your work is great. for your first you on the right path.
heres a hint the more you work the resin and cloth the more the colors mix. try putting your swirl on and pulling it off from the center out. pin the cloth down to the foam on the first passes. i use cobalt… thats up to you.
work looks great.
good luck
Vader
Wow, you guys should settle down a bit. I see some great swirls done here, and they are ALL good. There are several methods with varying results. There’s a couple of guys here in socal that have seperations that are just retarded. The pics don’t even do them justice. These guys are expert laminators, that basically just got bored with doing clears and started experimenting. I see alot of mud out there these days so I asked these guys to post up. Keep in mind that they don’t really allow people to watch them do their thing because it’s what seperates them from the rest. As a favor they put up some pics or allowed me to. Vader is giving you the key to the city. More than I ever asked him to, and he gets bullshit called on him. I can ask him to stop posting if you like. A couple of tips…if your taking 30 minutes to lam a color job your working it too much. It’s a one shot deal. You don’t want resing soaking into the foam for that long. Also, you can mix up your base color and then add in your smaller cups of color (the popular method). Or you can do it the opposite way and get color seperations like Vaders. You gotta think. And in some cases it’s the opposite of what you think. Don’t use a lot of pressure with your squeegee at first. This is where the mud begins. Cobalt is essential if you want seperations like Vaders. Those little cups of color can be added seperate rather than poured into the main bucket. But then you have to catalize them. Q: how do you keep the little cups of color from going off on the bench while your working? You set them off slow. But wait, then you get a 30 to 40 minute gell time right? One last time…it’s called COBALT. Goes off slow enough to give working time…but when it kicks it KICKS! Goes from gell to rock hard in a few minutes and you don’t get mud. The longer it sits there wet, the more the color lines are gonna blur…
With a base color such as beige, how would you get a clean seperation with say red, or blue, or yellow or even green. how about all four? Or more? Listen to Vader. He’s trying to help you guys out.
Now take a look at the rail wrap. Or the area around the boxes or even the rail areas on the bottom A bit mudded huh? That’s the real hard part because you have no choice but to work these areas a bit to get your lap flat and nice. But it should at the least show you that if you work it too much it’s gonna mud out.
This one wasn’t done by Vader, but rather his teacher. Funny, if he knew I posted these he would be bummed. This is my friends board and when he got it my other friend that lammed it said “Sorry…mudded that one out”. He considers this a crappy one.
…yes
is like you say
I do that but in other style, my customers dont want those tartan s colors yet
but in my opinion, some colors work better with DMA instead of cobalt
guys its all in 1 gral squeegee pass
put the little colors that you want to form the idea (depend of what you looking for) with DMA or cobalt and a bit of cat
then you can do the 1 gral wet out from the middle to the rails with the normal quantity of cat
Exactly Reverb. It all depends on your taste, and what your looking for. Some people don’t like the real busy swirls. Like me. I tend to like the softer more wispy ones. The japanese freak on the crisp color seperations…
I like all the swirls AND advice given within this thread. All welcomed and respected. Lots of great ideas…
Heres a few from swirl #3
. . . lokbox. . . . your a proper artist
Hi guys ,
I have been totally out of line. Darthvader I’m sorry for lashing out at you. I’m having some problems in my life that I’m having trouble coping with. I’m having trouble sleeping too. My comments make me look like a real jack ass. I’m not normally a mean person. I’m going to try my best to be very mellow.
Hoping all your waves are clean and glassy
Ray
I don’t shape, don’t glass, just surf and there are amazing works of art in this thread but man this post just has so much stoke… reminds me of good hunts with my pops (hes a hunter, not a surfer) and some of the moments we had… you and your kids will remember that forever, even if you do shape often… a real gift to be able to shape, glass etc your own board but to include your kids in that process and pass it on is just amazing… you must be one proud father… stoked for sure - thanks for the post
Lakamese…insane! Getting the kids in on it is so cool. Bet they were stoked as well. Now everytime they ding it they’ll feel that hollow gut feeling that we all get when we ding them. I think getting them involved puts them on a personal level with the board and they would therefore care for it and appreciate it more. But then again you could also show them how to do some ding repair so they could thrash it as well lol. Cheers! Nice resin job btw…
