My first tint and pattern. Epoxy on PU foam, 2x6 oz deck, 6 oz bottom. Steep learning curve. On the bottom, I threw the tint in after the hardener, before any mixing. The colour precipitated out, and I now have a speckled green bottom. When I did the top, I took too long, and the resin started gelling before I got the laps fully wet. Lots of patching. Then, when sanding the rails, the board slipped out of my hand and fell onto the corners of the racks - more patching. But now I’m quite happy - it always looks good after glossing
ooooooooooooh snap that may be the gnarliest thing in here yet…jedi mind tricks in that resin…assuming that you do rule as hard as you seem to, and that is resin…stoked!
Thanks for the compliment. When Vader posted his masterpiece immediately below my post, I didn't think anyone would comment on my pedestrian effort:-)
When I start my boards, I'm a tough customer with high expectations. But doing the hard work myself, but the time I finish my attitude becomes "it'll do" - especially when it comes to sanding and polishing:-)
I used "Surf Clear" epoxy that I got from Aerontec in Claremont. It's quite similar to Gurit SP 115 that AMT Composites sells. I used Ampreg21 on a previous board that had an opaque yellow pigment, and I've also used SP115.
Where do you get your Styrofoam? Until now I've been using PU blanks, but I want to try EPS. All the suppliers I can find are far out of town, and a mission to get to.
I tested Ampreg21 for doing a resin coat but I found that it doesnt flow very well and its REALLY difficult to sand. When I wanted to coat my second board towards the end of August, I wanted to coat it with the SP 115 but AMT were out of stock. I do an automotive finish on my boards ( MS primer followed by 2k white enamel) so my boards look like those rental boards. Next time, Im going to try some epoxy fairing compound instead of a resin coat and hopefully save alot of time and weight too.
As for styrofoam, I order blocks of it from Sagex in Sacks Circle Bellville South. I design my profile template with Akushaper and print out the plans onto A0 sheets of paper at Postnet/Canal Walk. I then stick the printouts onto masonite and cut out the templates (2 of them) with a jig saw. I mount the masonite templates on the sides of the styrofoam block and cut out the blank with a big hotwire. Thats more or less the technique. If you need more info and pictures, send me a PM.
Would you be offended if I copied your board's graphics? I want to do an all wood board with the pattern of your board. If it bothers you I will scratch the ideal.
Canary and Purple hearth with Ebony Pin Lines in place of the paint.
