Johan, wow. How in the world did you get such crisp color separation? My epoxy swirls just blur and run together. Yours are really impressive. Any advice for me? thx
Hey Greg. Well, out of 5 swirls done, 2 came out great(this one and my 2nd one), one was ok, and 2 I didn’t like too much. SO I am no expert. but, I can say how I did it.
You have to use more resin firstly. For this length of board the amount listed in the epoxy primer for the bottom lam is 15oz. So I had 15oz(450ml) of clear resin, and then a total of 9oz more of colors. 2 tones of green, 2 tones of blue and yellow. Not positive(have to check my notes) but I think it was: 90ml green tint, 60ml lime green tint, 60ml blue tint, 45ml light blue pigment and 45ml yellow. … At the end, I had to mix 1.5oz of clear to paint the dry spots on the laps.
Note: On a hunch, I added some X-55 accelerator to the clear, hoping that it gelling faster would cut down on the ‘leaking’ of the swirls once it was lammed. Cold shop though, so it still took a while to gel. ??
Plan it all out and lay out all the cups of resin & hardener, mix in your tints. Once all the batches are mixed and ready to go, take your big bucket of clear and pour in the various colors, just go at it.(keep a little bit in each cup behind) After that do one figure 8 pass in the big bucket with your mixing stick and then pour it out on the board however it suits you I guess. I then take my squeegee and pass it over the ‘trails’ of resin, but at a very low angle, and barely more than the pressure of the squeegees weight. This is just to spread out the resin trails a bit without mixing the resin too much. After that it was just pulling the excess resin out of the cloth, from center out to the rails in long passes. Not too much working, you can see it muddy a bit, and the stuff that rolls of the rails is visibly mixed, but the ‘waterfalls’ of resin don’t cover all the the laps, that is where leaving some resin in the cups comes in. If there is clear left in the bottom of the bucket you can mix colors in for more swirl, but I didn’t have much left in my bucket so I just dribbled resin from the cups along the rails. Trying to lay the resin down where it was already wet so that it all rolled down on to the dry spots and then got squeegeed in. Still had a few dry spots left after all that, so that is where the 1.5oz of final clear came in with a paint brush.
I think what helped is that the base was clear. That way a lot of the ‘muddying’ ended up as various shades of green. … when I mixed the colors into the bucket of clear, I could actually see the clear resin begin to take in the green tint just sitting there.
Hope thats of some help.
Top and rails:
does anyone know where i can purchase some cobalt? thank you.

Here are three photos of my 9’2 longboard.
My first and currently only experience of mowing foam.
I shaped it by hand at Falmouth Marine College during my military resettlement course.
It was one of the most satisfying things I have done.
Needless to say I am hooked and looking to shape again in the future.

Love that Surferguy80!
Simple is always great!
Nice job.
Will,
The board looks nice. Do you have any more photos? How did you get those red spots near the tail blotchy and granular (I don’t think that is the proper term but I’m sure you know what I’m talking about)?
