Show us your resin tints and patterns!

Did this today, my first mexican blanket. 8 colors (yellow, red, magenta, purple, blue, white, lime green, purple pearl). I layered this color pattern, you can see it if you look close, there are horizontal and vertical lines. The pics don’t really do it justice, came out way better than I had ever hoped.

Ray you want shaped blanks?  why didn't you say so?  I'm your huckleberry (no offense to Mr. Huckleberry, of course!)

Hey Keith - now that you mention it, I go by Huck.  Unfortunately, I had to take Huckleberry 'cuz Huck was taken - but since no one is currently using it, any chance you could pull some strings, so I could get it?  thanks, Huck

Super-stoked on this one just finished.  Made with tow wt foam and I the chambered redwood stringers.  Glass is double 6oz flat-weave volan and isophalic resin.  Color is tinted rice paper inlays, with opaque and transparent resin panels. Thanks Jim Phillips for the redwood stringers. Here’s a link to the board http://cooperfishcalendar.com/blog/?tag=riceboard6

AMAZING color work on this thread! Where is evryone getting their color pigments/tints from beside the places like Foaz-EZ, Surf Source, Greenlight... are you guys making your own? Anyone care to share how I can do this. Probably pretty simple and cheaper than $12-14 for 2-4 ozs there are some colors I would like to make or use but have only seem limited colors at some of these sites. Thanks again!

burfords and fgi…

i have been performing some experiments which have proven very successful and inexpensive.  i procure dry rit dye powder from the supermarket for dirt cheap.  i pour the powder into a small vial or jar with a tightly sealing lid until about half full.  i fill the container with lacquer thinner and much of the powder  dissolves, but not all.  when i use it, i let it settle and draw the clear solution from the top of the vial.  a little goes a long way.  at first, i was lazy and just dissolved the dye in additive f because i had it already.  oh yeah, all these experiments are RR epoxy.  transparency, clarity, and bond have all been excellent.  i’ve not had one out long enough to speak to UV stability.  that might be the weak link. i’ve used this method for years on wood with other finishes, and it’s proved color-stable, but that’s indoors.

nothing magic, but very interesting.  the color concentrates are powerful.  keep it simple, and you can get some cool results on the cheap.

Not bad got any pics of your supermarket score! Would have never thought of rit dye, use to use it for tye dye t shirts when I was a kid! Maybe a shirt to match a board is in order here. I will have to give this a shot. Saw some pearl ex pigment being used on here what is it being added to? Thinner? I’m just a little skeptical about what I add to epoxy that will not cause fish eyes or mess with the curing of the resin. Any help here oh color gods.

Ryan,

8-14 dollars for 3 ounces of paste pigment is a huge super good deal. You only use a little  bit each time. FoamEZ and Mitch's Solona Beach sell Dura Tech paste...Good stuff, worth the price. With red, blue, yellow and white you can make almost anything.......I started helping people glass their boards...and people started dropping off little gifts when I wasn't looking...like green tint and this red tint that is out of this world.... go the the next surf expo with a hand full of cash...ask questions...check out Fiberglass Supply and Fiberglass Hawaii. Surf Supply in Oceanside has colors too.

i have also used pearl sucessfully many times.  the quality brands (i used fragonard) are very finely milled and mix in well dry, just like you would add silica.  the pearl is fairly opaque on its own and needs little in the way of color- maybe a touch of white pig to lighten it up but not cover it.  i do buy black and white from fiberglass florida.  the pearl effect is very subtle and best under a transparent toner, almost like candy apple finishes.  pearl swirls with clear resin under another color can be nice, but on top it loses its depth and doesn’t pop.  if you sand into the pearl layer, it can get weird on you, so don’t.  bury it in the mix so you’re only touching the layer over top when you sand.

neither these nor the addition of a few ml of color concentrates in lacquer thinner will make a difference with your epoxy cure.  the thinner acts very much like additive f-- it lowers the viscosity and slightly clouds the mix in the cup, but completely clear when set.  no fisheyes, no bullshit.  remember, we’re talking about something from a few drops to a half a capful into the whole pot.  if you’re stressed about lacquer thinner, than just dissolve it in additive f, but you’ll have to sand more then.  the pearl actually smooths out the resin without thickening as much as silica would.  you can actually get away with using the pearl in small amounts in a lam layer, and it holds it above the glass and more visible.  just get it nice and super-flat as you won’t be able to knock it down without it showing.

if you’re worried about results, do some test panels.  fwiw, you should universally do test panels with any new (to you) color process, as there are so many variables.  waste a few dixie cups and work out the details on the cheap before you brick a tub of glowing RR when you can’t get your multiple mixes out of the pot in time during some complicated sequence.

no impressive pics, but lots of successful little applications-some bigger, some smaller.  i’m just a humble experimenter, not one of the color gods.

CBG again thanks for the info thats why I love this site so much is the willingness of people to share their trials and errors it really is much appreciated. I have only done two boards with color (on # 7 right now) but hooked on color now.

I spent Sunday looking over all 180 something pages of this thread and the progression from 2007 up till now for those that are still posting have come very far in a short time! Great work to all!

DarthVader holy sheeeetttt! I want to join the darkside! Hell everyone on here great freaking job!

Stingray thanks for leads and yes I agree good deals was just fishing for peoples creative ways at making their own colors and looking at ways to get my costs to the cheapest possible but no sacrifice quality. We'll just call me what I am a cheap ass! HAHAHA And I would love to start going to Surf Expo again been a long time at least 16 years for me used to get in with friends and clean up on cheap goods! Now they want a Tax ID number and thats a whole other can of worms I'm not quite ready to open!

So here is some shots of my first two color attempts one is a Big Guy Fish and the other a 5'0 for a little grom (4 years old) and yes little boards are a lot harder to shape but I think he will be very stoked. He is a Florida Gators fan and his dad asked if I could do it orange and blue for him.

Again thank you for all the help!!!

Ryan

OOPS forgot the pics here ya go! Still have to hot coat and  add some pin lines to even the lap on the little board and put some logos on the bottom. Thats the Big Bear holding his new fish he says its a magic board for him! What a compliment!! Forgot to mention that these are Epoxy EPS and just used the new Surf Source 3000 epoxy and have to say its awesome wets out great very runny compared to the 2000 which was almost like table top epoxy!

Fiberglass services in Gardena !!! Tons of colors in tints and pigments

Bgsurf Thanks mans thats more like it! A lot to choose from there and another good source for supplies! Much appreciated!
