Thanks for this thread Herb!
What a trip it is seeing all this old photos.
A trip down memory lane.
I also made some decks in woodshop class.
Before surfing, skating was all I did.
Long hair, Led Zeppelin, skating and weed.
Got busted for the weed thing and was sent to Sanra Fe Chtistian in Solana Beach which was literally a quick skate to the Del Mar Skate Ranch.
Brought in one of my deck which I made and painted.
Skulls, flames, and all sorts of evil shit!
That was the beginning of my art career.
Freaked out the christians real good!
Ditched school and skated the Key Hole weekly.
Built tons of wood ramps, and skated every skate spots I could find!
More photos please!
Nice tread Herb - skating was the adjunct/substitute for surf all through my grommethood, and there was pools, drainage culverts, homemade ramps…
We used to laminate layers for kicktails by stacking the plys up and jamming the ends under a door. Boards were all imported and waaaay expensive.
I can’t look at a skateboard anymore without hurting myself. This pic might be the last time I rode. Channelling Dogtown…
snoopy breakin’ the law.
well said
’ RDM ’ , here on Sways , has made a few nice wooden skate decks …next time I’m in Melbourne , I hope to make one with him , maybe get another skate with him , and , hopefully , get some more photos …
But , it is WINTER here now … meaning , the ditch may be rained out , as well as the outdoor skateparks here .
I want to check out the indoor parks here , too, at some stage .
Vicco has some GREAT skateparks !! It leaves west oz for dead. There are some GREAT skaters here , as well as talented surfers .

All of my surfing dreams started as skate dreams…
I used to dream about all of the cool places there were to skate out in California While having to cruise the flat land in Key West.
On This…
It’s a Steve Olsen around 86…
Tail worn by a goofy footer
It has Indy trucks and P&P Bones Threes, smooth like butter, very grippy…
The only thing I’ve managed to keep from my youth…
It’s mostly used these days to move furniture…
But I still do ride it from time to time,
Hey Ben ,I can still do those handstands ( I just choose not to haha)
We used to cruise Duval Street and hassle the tourists a bit…
I remember using a bike inner tube around the bottom of the board, (we called it a cheater strap), to do jumps and drops and stuff Had a great time,
and then someone invented the Ollie…
I could NEVER learn to Ollie…DAMMIT…
Da glory days for you girls. I date all of you by 10 years at least. Doc Ball was the omly guy who Skateboarded before me. Lowel
Herb - I wasn’t aware you were/are into skateboard action! I’m sorry to say my old santa cruz 5 ply was f’king bad! I had tracker trucks and kryptonics! But…it’s been in skateboard heaven since hs. Skate n is history for me man. Dunno, but i get bored real quik skateboard n on the streets…that’s why I quit! To each his own.
I gave it up because falling on water much nicer than asphalt.
Herb and sammy,
saw you boys skated providence and fall river back in the day. You might have seen my dad pushing around town.
Boards were tiny back then. Rad retro stuff.
