Skil 190

Did anybody see the skil 190 that just ended a few hours or so ago ?

Aloha ,

Cal

On ebay …

Was it this one. If it was I bought it. Considering it age It’s was in nice shape when I got it. At the moment I have disassembled and am refurbishing it. Will also be buffed and polished out. Why do you ask?

I’ve got Cal’s Skil which was so hammered that the only the armature, field coils, and blades were salvagable.  The cost to rebuild is as much as most eBay Skil’s so I advised him to find another and he was bidding on that 190.  If you have a complete one with a bad motor let me know.   Thanks - Pete

I should have looked at the date that Cal posted this. The one I bought isn’t the one he was speaking of. I bought the one in the photo back in October of 2013 For a buy it now of 299.00 I was proxy bidding on the one he was referring to but lost the auction because it ended while I was at work I proxy bid it up to 257.59 But was out bid. It sold to 262.59 Was kinda bummed, but I used the money to put towards your Bosch Mod. Also the seller had double listed at a starting price of 250.00 I advised him that he needed to remove the later listing before some one placed a bid on it. But they didn’t and someone did bid on it only to be told that it had allready been sold.

So you’re the guy that made me pay so much!  The seller was an EBay newbee and had it listed twice so I bid on the first one.  Runs smooth, very lightly used, I just put in sharp blades (thanks Pete) and a new cord.  Didn’t look like anybody ever opened it up, they just kept cutting the cord shorter.

I wonder why some of the name tags are upside down, maybe earlier ones?  What’s the serial# on the one in your post Wavecraft?  Mine’s A-730536.

I think you got a great bargain. I think I got a good bargain at 299 with free shipping for mine. You may be right about the serial# badges. Don’t really know though. Mine is # A-731740 only a difference of 1204 When I got it it seemed to run strong. When I opened it up. It was just full of dust, looked like it had never been blown out. The brushes had 60%left on them and the field coils and the armature looked fine. The wires were a little stiff but that’s to be expected for such an old model. I think they were manufactured somewhere around 1958 to 60 I believe the 676 is an older model dating back from 1957 and earlier I’ve heard that there was a model 101 but I’ve never seen one.

It was a great price, I talked to him after the sale was complete, payed him a little more and shipping. He was truly lost on Ebay, I had mercy and made sure he got a square deal.

I’d like to test the theory that the tags were upside down on the earlier planers. Anybody else have a 190 that you could post the tag orientation and serial#?  Any picture of tags would be cool.

I’ve seen an old Skil ad with both the 676 and 190 for sale at the same time.  Both models have some tags upside down but there’s no serial# on the 676 tag. Is there a serial# on 676 anywhere on the tool?

I’m looking for information on details like this for a project I’m doing.  Serial#'s, documentation (receipts, pdf’s, vintage photos ) showing dates when possible.  I’m in touch with Pete about it, I know that Cleanlines and Bill T wil have lots of info. Should probably start a new planer research thread.

I sold Kazuma this 676 a while back. It had the serial number R-103 stamped on the side of the motor houseing, underneath, on the grill side. Maybe he could put a photo up.Not sure if it is a factory stamping or if a prior owner stamed it. But being that it seems to follow Skil’s practice of puting a letter before the number indicateing the manufacturing run, I think it could be a factory serial number stamping.

Here’s the tag on a 190 I refurbished and sold about a year or two ago. And a couple before and after shots. Close to the # on the one I have now. B.T.W. I’m keeping this most recent one for myself.

Yes Mitch, my 676 has the factory stamped serial number #103. This planer is so special to me and it is my favorite to shape with. The drum design forces me to slow things down which brings me back to why I started shaping in the first place, the love of it. Mitch, I owe you one for letting me have that special planer.

Looking at Sam Cammack’s 676, no number anywhere on this one. Wonder if that 103 is a shop stamp? Any more 676’s out there with the # stamped on the motor housing?

Gene please say hello to Sammy for me. I haven’t seen him in a long.long time. He was a great insparation to me at McCrystal’s Factory back in the early 90’s

It was my pleasure Matt. I’m glad you’re the one who ended up with it.

**Well it took me a while but I finely finished the restoration on the Skil 190 I bought from eBay last October. When I got it I think it hadn't been used for a lot of years and as you can see through the grill, in the before photo, the motor was just packed with wood shavings. I could tell it had never been cleaned or blown out. After I disassembled the motor and cleaned it all out the armature, commutator and field looked good. I haven't done a amp test on it but it's running smooth, strong and the exhaust is blowing out cool. For a very old tool I think the motor is still in very good condition. Some Before and Afters**

Mitch, beautiful job brother. That planer is something special.

The way you guys watch Ebay I’m suprised I’ve been able to snag a few over the last couple of years.  I think it’s all in what you are looking for.  What you are willing to pay and whether or not you consider yourself a collector.  Lowel

Lowel, I know that you can appreciate the beauty of a classic planer. The way I look at it is that my planer is my livelihood and if it helps me create a better board then it is worth just about any price. Mitch sold me his prized 676 a while back and overnight it has made my classic longboards 100% better. Yes it works like all my other Skil planers but the feeling that I get by using such a classic tool brings the love back to our craft which is revealed in the finished product. To me that is worth a whole lot more then the market price of a planer and it is certainly priceless to the customer that gets that magic board.

I have several skil 100s and have never gone through one of them. Can anyone direct me to a place or site that I might get the parts to rebuild these? Thanks in advance.

There is a place in orange County that I can’t remember the name of that has bearings.  Bruce Jones Skil 100 website is still up and running.  They sell bearings.  There are parts available on Ebay.  If you can get Pete C to go thru it, you are better off.  Sears Parts has the bearings as well.
