SLX TECHNOLOGY

HI GUYS!

I’m wondering if you can help with explaining SLX technology since I have just bought a new board and used it three times.

Would the deck usally sink and cloth show given that SLX is supposed to be robust?

I have attached some pics!

Thanks

reminds me of several new resin/glass breakthru's..........like r.s.t. resin.

rst what?

Hi pioden, from the looks of the photos the board you purchased is not technology, perhaps a step backwards.I have a few “lightweight” boards that I shaped and glassed myself that each have over 30 sessions of aggressive surfing on them. One board is 1.5 pound eps with 2 layers of 4 oz E glass on the deck and 1 layer of 4 oz E o n the bottom(glassed with resin research quick kick epoxy). The other is 2 pound eps and has 1 layer of 6oz E top and bottom and is glassed with greenroom epoxy fast. Both boards were built to be lightweight and disposable(for myself) instead they have “normal” wear, small pressure dents and some footwells where my feet are planted when riding. It’s a shame that you dropped some hard earned coin on a new board only to have the deck cave in after a few surfs,I hope the company that built it refunds your cash, maybe seek out a reputable local shaper for your next board.

I can do that kind of damage to a stock PUPE in half an hour :) Even though that's epoxy it looks like they have one layer of cloth on the deck from those dents after a few times out.

This is a foam issue also. The board has a minimal stringer and is no doubt very soft foam. You don't get that deep of a ding from three go outs unless you are stomping the dang thing. It's the cheapest lightest blank and probably so is the lam.

Hi Guys, I actually work for GSI and we produce the SLX construction-as Yorky said, I’d take it back to the retailer that you purchased it from and  get him/her to look at it and they can fill in a warranty form for you and send it in to us. The GSI Territoy Manager in your region will check it out, and if it’s sub quality, and the deck crush is beyond tolerance, the board will be replaced.

SLX is a lightweight perfromance construction but durability is a goal also. The boards are close to “Pro Light” in weight but under normal use you should have greater longevity than a board of pro light construction. I’ve had my Webber slx shortboards for 4 years and outside of coulour fade, the decks have held up unreal and the boards look and surf great. You will still get some deck dimples like a normal surfboard, but those photo’s look a little bit telling.

Hope that hepls.

"It seems odd to have to repair a brand new board???"

In case anyone missed it, one of my pet peeves is super light/disposable product marketed to Average Joe surfer.

In all fairness, your board was used 3 whole times.  I've seen boards broken in two on the very first paddle out - not a single wave ridden!  It happens and usually (I know of none anyway) not covered by any sort of warranty.

pioden, mate i’d be pissed off! I’d take it back to the shop just to show them.

It looks very bad!

Yorkey! Dude!

I sent photos of the damage via email, and they seemed to be  happy to refund me the money. However, when I finally sent the board and they examine it they change their minds and said “It’s quite normal for a new board!”

It seems odd to have to repair a brand new board???

SLX = Super Lightweight Epoxy = Fragile.  Basically a non-compsand type of construction outsourced via Global Surf Industries.  Robust for it's weight?

Any 'super light' glass job is likely to be fragile.  Epoxy is tougher than polyester but at some point, a super light glass job is going to be fragile no matter what type of resin is used.

In my opinion, it is a marketing ploy to sell boards that self destruct at a faster rate.  This results in more board sales as the broken boards are replaced.

It's one thing to hype a 5 lb high performance board if you're a pro and getting all you can break free.  For the average surfer forking out $400-$650 for a new board, it's BS.

Unless you're a demanding pro on the circuit, skip the super light and get yourself something with a durable type of construction.

Given I have only used it three times would the sunken deck damage be consistent with a light glass job?

Thanks for replies so far guys very useful!

Unfortunately, yes.   Typical super light glassed boards often have deck dents after the first use.

I was told that this sort of damage was normal for most modern boards???

I have been surfing for 15 years and although I don’t know much about the science behind board contruction. I have never bought a board that did that after 3 surfs! I’m at a loss with this and my faith in big shaping companies has wilted.

Shape my own from herein! It’s a shame I can’t get a refund on the board!

Oh O !

SLX EPOXY

SLX sets the performance standard in Epoxy Boards. Boards with the SLX logo are layed up by hand in the traditional wet layup method using Epoxy. An SLX gives you a super lightweight board with quick acceleration and a very responsive feel. These boards are built for high performance and will bring a fresh vision to your surfing! Surfers worldwide are adding wet layup epoxy boards to their quivers because they are super light, recoil quickly and add pop to your surfing. Get on an SLX Epoxy and feel the difference for yourself.
get a better board next time !!

Never heard of SLX but if this board is new, then it is poorly made. Cloth showing could be a sand through to oil or something on the glass to prevent wet out. How many surfs on this ?

I have a webber SLX.  It also has a few dry cloth spots. but I dont have deck dents like that..  Are you doing airs? cause that causes dents pretty quickly if you do them all the time.  The Webber boards are made by GSI now in china and are poorly made.  Thats the reason I started making my own boards.  Its turning into a pretty good business too.

EPS Epoxy surfboards…Greg’s been doing them for what?..30years?
