Hey Twist, howzit? Great job on the board, it turned out really nice. The bottom looks good as far as vee and concave nose. The beauty is that you did this all on your own. You didn’t rely on close tolerant blanks and have someone do the thinking for you. Keep this up and there is nothing you can’t shape. I do have some questions about how the foam shaped and what methods did you use. Does the power plane tear out or is it easy to work by slowing down? How did it take to screening? Some info on workability would be greatly appreciated. Good on 'ya.
Great looking board - great imagination and craftmanship.
Can you tell me more about the clear west system epoxy you used. Ive only used the west stuff on boat repairs and misc items because its rather deep amber color. I always cover that type of work with paint so I havent been worried about it. However for some boat odds and ends it may be nice to have a clearer product.
Is there a west system product code that I can look up.
thanks for the encouragement guys. I found that the foam did not plane as well as i was hoping but sands great. Some of that may be that i was taking a little bit much off each pass. it shape so much better with a surform and 40grit paper glued to a 12inch block. I used 150 grit srceen to blend the rails and some 60 grit paper glued to rubber underfelt both work well. i think i will glue sheets up different next time as the glue joints were a pain in the butt. i will go with the method of 2 inch strips cut to the rocker profile and glued together and see how that works.
I had planned to add the timber panels from the start and was at first going to do the whole center of the top deck to help prevent pressure dents turning into de lams but the weight was a concern and so i just did the nose and tail. these panels also worked to cover the gule lines were the sheets were joined and hopefully add extra strengh.
i am glassing the bottom later today will post a pick
I time to glass the top of board this avo did 1x 6oz + 1x 4 oz . the timber did gas out a very small amount ( only in the nose area ) but rest of board was fine. the last few board i have glassed i did in evening and it was a real warm day so i had to work fast to get the laps done as it went off real quick! but got it all in the end. The board has taken 1050 ml to do bottom ( and used every drop to get done) and 1500ml on top. This is board 5 i have glassed and every time i do one i realise how much i have to learn but thats part of what makes it so much fun
i am going to use PU to fill and gloss as 1/2 the price. you should like that west stuff sets up nice and quick. i warmed the resin in the sun for 2 hours and it flowed a lot better than when it was cold
Hey Ant, beautiful board. The figuring in the redwood really comes out. I dig the stringers at the tail also. I’ve found (in this part of the world) that West Systems is the most expensive around. Hope you can find other suppliers. The poly will really shine up. Cheers.
Beautiful board! Very creative design. Poly on top of epoxy? Are you not afraid of it chipping off every time you ding it? Or does doing the fill coat with it as well make it adhere better?
I got this straight from the man, Greg Loehr: Epoxy lam, Epoxy hot coat, poly gloss. As long as the epoxy has thoroughly cured and is CLEAN (no oily fingerprints) the gloss coat can be polyester. The poly polishes shiny. You can use Epoxy to gloss also, but poly shines better.
thanks guys. I not to worried about the poly chipping, i have not had any trouble on the other 3 boards i have done. brian from "hardcore surf" here in NZ got this expoy resin made for poly fill coats to stick to.
I cure the board for a 4-7days before in my roof space. Then before fill coat I washed, light sand and scotch brighted all shiney spots off and poly sticks good
the epoxy is $30 for 1000ml and ploy is $15 so big saving over fill and gloss coat. but thanks for imput i will look up and see if doing epoxy fill coat will be better
You’re good to go Ant.! Your prep method is on the money.(Spot On) If you want a second opinion, you can always ask Huie. He will definitely give you an earfull.
heres the gloss on the top, have not sanded or polished yet. had a bit of drama on the bottom so will be a week or so before can get in water. i had a few small pin holes in the lam that i did not see and poly bleed into blank. there made a few small holes that i had to fill with epoxy, real bummer but lucky there were real small. I am not that sold on the resin tint that i tryed on the nose the colors with the wood not quite what i was hoping for but hey will do it different on next one
Hey Ant, The board turned out beautifully. you might want to go to the thread: uv gloss coat over resin, Tom says he had good luck with an HVLP gun and spraying. Check it out. By the way, Tom seems to be a real decent guy and will share info.
ps. Nice table with the natural edge. What species is it?
